...And welcome to BZPower

Hello there.

When I first joined BZPower, I was surprised absolutely nobody was there to greet me, yet did greet three other members around the time I joined. So I decided to make it my duty to greet all the new members who joined with the simple yet friendly phrase...

"Hello there, and welcome to BZPower!"

Now, why in the world am I bringing this up? Mainly because I'd like to encourage the other members on BZP to go greet the newbies, with a simple status reply of "Hello there, and welcome to BZPower!".

At the moment, I have successfully greeted 149 new members in my 2 years on BZPower, and answered a lot of their questions mostly in PM, helping them to get to know the community and board much faster before their first post.

So go out there, and help people get accustomed to BZPower. ;)

To a certain degree, I think the The Revolving Door - Official I'm New! / I'm Back! topic was created for this sort of purpose. Skimming the replies there, it seems to have been a success in that regard.

Saying hi to a new member on their profile certainly can't hurt, though!

I've scared off greeted my share of people when I noticed them for awhile. I got a strange lack of response, so I've kinda cut back on it.

Back in the day someone did it when I was a newb and that honestly creeped me out, so I kinda understand why.

I myself do it sometimes, but when it first happened to me back in 2007 it kind of felt like I was being approached by cult members.

I actually sent a message with some links to rule and reference topics to every new member for some time, in 2007, I think. Not sure when I stopped and why, though. :P

I can imagine that probably got rather tedious.

I know it is sarcasm, but around 2010, I think I did that for about a month and after a couple of times you can just imagine how it lost is novelty.

I actually don't remember that many member welcoming me to the site when I joined. I think maybe three to five members said hi to me in my profile, but that's it.

And while I never PMed rules and guidelines to new members, I did used to say 'Welcome to BZP!' in every new BZP member's profile page back in the day. I think I stopped doing it when the site went offline, and I just never got back into it when it came back.

Everyone is one choice away from being the bad guy in another person's story.

This was one of the jobs of the old Forum Mentor role, in addition to sending PMs to unwitting rule-breakers. However, I always considered that role much more about making new members feel welcome to the site as a whole, with everything I did in the role as an extension of that one core idea.

The entire role of the Forum Mentor seemed unfairly under-appreciated during its time as a rung on the staff hierarchy.

I got a PM from Gata when I joined, I think. Maybe? I might have ignored it. I do remember the terrifying rule-breaking PMs though. :P

The role at the bottom of the stack always gets overlooked. It's not an "I CAN FEEL THE POWUH!" role, it's a role for the cheerily selfless who work their fingers to the bone and never get any appreciation.

Just remember that, kids. For every shameless attention hog who is famous for doing very little, there is at least ten people behind the scenes who never get recognized even though they work their tails off.

:P I actually started doing it before I became a Forum Mentor and I stopped not too long after I became one...not sure how long but a few months, I think. Nah, I was probably the longest-serving FM because Black Six didn't know what else to do with me. :P

Yeah like being a Cart collector at a Walmart. We get paid the least, have the most bosses breathing down our necks, have to combat virtually every type of weather from freezing rain/snow to blistering summer heat. Also trying to doge crazy parking lot drivers while trying to also keep your collection of carts neat and under control is no picnic. Yet we the select few go under appreciated. Ours is the most dangerous job as well.

I still get a bit scared when I get those kind of messages (being the type of person that I am, I am bound to get them; have you seen my profile rating?), but when you remember that they are just people like yourself sitting behind a screen of some sort, it makes them not scary whatsoever. Same thing with someone in political power: she/he's no divine power, just some guy that's got a fancy title that was supposed to be granted to her by his peers, no better then any other human being. But as they are human, I always give them the same amount of respect as one should give to everyone.

That wasn't just for you but for anyone reading this. :P  Just wanted to make that clear.

True but they have the power to end your career on a particular site. I actually got myself banned from a site for the first time ever in my internet career(That I know of) recently and it was basically because the Admin didn't like what I had to say or that I wasn't as active as other members. Though he was only 15 and quite disrespectful to me so it isn't a big loss. That's why I no longer have the Zoids in my Signature. If I somehow got myself Banned from here it would be a really big blow as this is basically the only place I spend my time.

As for my welcoming practices... Usually I don't go hunting for new members but if I stumble onto a topic or a post and I see the poster has a post count in the single or even lower double digits I will add a Welcome to BZP to my post to them.

The only time I ever welcomed people to BZP was when they managed to break a rule in their first week and I had to PM them about it. It felt kind of heartless to be like "Hey you messed up" so saying "Hey welcome to BZPower, you messed up" was somehow better.

Quick question... Are you in a forced retirement? Just thought I'd ask based on your response. :P.

Seems though that maybe saying a little more like, "Hi, I noticed you are new and are stumbling with the rules a bit. Try to work on it going forward and the staff is your friend, we are here to help."

Yeah it it a bit long winded and not as to the point as "Your the new guy now slap the mod cuffs on 'em" lol.

Prowl, the sailor guardian is now married and simply doesn't have the time to protect us anymore, hence her retired member title. Speaking of which, at 5100, the normal member title would be "Mask of Light Unveiled" (Thank Kaneo Tarakada for that.)

If you like Pingu & want to support a good project, click here. Also, I've rejoined the BZPRPG & I have a new profile for a new game. Click here to see it.

Welcome to BZPower! :P

I'll greet people if it's their first post and I have a reason to talk to them, but I don't go out of my way or anything. Instead I try to help newbies who have trouble with stuff, like how to share images. I did get some greetings when I joined, like three people in fact left comments on my profile saying stuff like "Welcome to the site! PM me if you have any questions!" That was pretty nice, and they did answer my newb-questions.

Welcome to BZPower. After 9 years in development, hopefully it would have been worth the wait. To listen to a commentary node, put your cross hair over the floating commentary symbol and press your primary fire. To stop a commentary node put your cross hair over the rotating node and press the primary fire again. Some commentary nodes may take control of the game in order to show something to you. In these cases, simply press your primary fire again to stop the commentary. In addition, your secondary fire will cycle you through all the commentary nodes in the level. Please let me know what you think after you’ve had a chance to play. I can be reached at irrationalrock@gmail.com and my favorite class is the S&T Crowd. Thanks and have fun!

(it was a joke)

(I didn't literally say that to anyone)

(I actually had a reputation of being one of the nicer and more patient staff members, and was very good at the position I held for about 10 years)

(this included spending time writing polite messages even if it took longer)

(but the point is that even though welcoming someone to BZP was a friendly thing to do, in the end I was still letting them know they'd broken a rule and I mean, no matter how nicely worded, that's still gonna make people go AH OOPS)

(so I made a joke about it)

I like getting a welcoming messages when joining forums - even if its an automated system its nice to have a private introduction pointing out stuff. Especially if you're not used to navigating forums and aren't going to find things like the specific welcoming topics.
