The Tahu topic

Okay, so previously I put out a topic discussing toa Kopaka, so I decided to put out one for Tahu.

Anyways, anything about Tahu's builds looks personality...

Why does Tahu say: "Ooo--oooh!" in a weird way, in the 1st or 2nd episode?

I like the design, but hate the fact of the emptiness/hollow look on the back of his legs. The Star Wars Constraction builds seem to have solutions for this

Why does Tahu say: "Ooo--oooh!" in a weird way, in the 1st or 2nd episode?

There's also "Abababadadanababaada weird voice in my head again"

-NotS

I still don't understand that. Was that an audio error of some sort or just the way Merlin the narrator said something? Which reminds me, some of the stuff that Tahu says gives a bit of a chuckle. For example: "I thought the job was finished."

I never liked his character that much. Whenever people take picture of the 2015 set, he usually looks okay, but as soon as I finished building him I had to modify him because I though he looked ridiculous with his inika proportions and awkwardly used armour add-ons. His new swords are nice, but I think the generic gold swords look better on him.

So he's had two skinny builds (Mata/Mistika), two bulky/fat builds (Nuva/G2) and one average build (stars).

In terms of masks:  Mata>Mistika>Otoko>Nuva

Merlin Mann is the writer, not the narrator. We don't know who narrates the webisodes.

Anyway, I love the new Tahu! I agree that some armor on the back of his legs would be an improvement. But overall I'm quite pleased with his design (even though he's probably one of my least favorite of the new Toa — he just doesn't stand out as much to me as Gali, Onua, Lewa, or Kopaka).

Gen 2 Tahu's set is probably one of my favorites out of all of them. (Lewa is my favorite overall so far.) I do think that Tahu has a good balance of red and gold pieces, which means his color scheme isn't messed up when he is wearing his gold mask. I also think that he looks really good with the trans-red Mask of Fire, which also fits well with his color scheme IMO.

For his character in the story, I do like what I've seen of it. Though I'm waiting for the books to come out so that I can learn even more about him and the other Toa.

Everyone is one choice away from being the bad guy in another person's story.

Gen 2 Tahu does correct one of the biggest flaws of the Stars version's color scheme: its lack of neutral colored joints to offset all that bright red, bright orange, and warm gold. The Stars version of Tahu was dominated by bright colors, even without the golden armor. But it didn't have the contrast that made it work for the original 2001 Tahu (Ackar had the same problem to a great extent). I believe a prototype of the 2010 Tahu had co-injected arm pieces so that he could have black shoulder joints, but it ended up being too fragile for LEGO to put into production.

Oh, yeah, right. I keep thinking he's both. No wonder he sounds different to the narrator. :headbonk:

Still, his dialogue is funny but somewhat cringey in my opinion. Hopefully character development isn't too much to ask for in the upcoming book. That doesn't mean I don't like him how he is at the moment. I just don't want him to be a hothead for too long.

I think Tahu's my favorite of the new Toa. Rather similar to the old, with only good changes. Consistent color scheme, fun weapons, and unhindered articulation.

Steam Name: Toa Hahli Mahri. Xbox Live Gamertag: Makuta. Minecraft Username: ThePoohster.

Wants: 2003 Jaller (from Jaller and Gukko), Exo-Toa, Turaga Nuju, Turaga Vakama, Shadow Kraata, Axonn, Brutaka, Vezon & Fenrakk, Nocturn, ORANGE FIKOU.

I got rid of my picture, are you happy?

He looks so much better with those black bits there. Thankfully the new Tahu has fixed the colour scheme issue well.

The new Tahu is actually my favourite of the new Toa sets. Mostly because of how he is inspired by the old Tahu sets a lot and that he also has inspiration from other Toa, such as his swords which were clearly inspired by Lhikan's. And he looks really cool with the gold swords on his back.

I now have Tahu as of 9 days ago, and i must say he really looks good. Maybe even a little too good...

Tahu 2015 definitely has the look he should have always had. His little wing blade antenna things are really an excellent touch. He looks like a leader for real this time. I also dig the chest plates as shin armor. I know hero factory sets did that as well, but I didn't pay attention to hf stuff at all. The new mask of fire is also pretty awesome. It may not be as iconic looking as the hau, but it's definitely an awesome mask and does bear some nice resemblance to the og hau. He also looks awesome in his gold mask. The only other toa I really like in his gold mask is kopaka. The rest of the 2015 toa kind of clash with their gold masks.

OG tahu I didn't have until much much later in time. The mata I had in 2001 were gali, kopaka, and lewa. For some reason I didn't want him that badly as a kid. Now looking back, he's definitely one of the best mata sets. The hau just is thee mask of bionicle 2001-10. His fire sword rules too. His nuva swords are some of the best weapons ever in the og line.

I dislike the back of Okoto Tahu's legs, wasn't there a way to build them to give back coverage?

Yes. You could do what I did here, but in red.

doesn't the ball on the bone press against the 2x1 system tile, making the coverage less stable?

You'd probably want something wider for Tahu's legs, though,

This is based on the upcoming First Order Stormtrooper set. That uses a 1x1 plate instead for the exact reason you specify.

True, but the stress on the 1x2 plate is certainly not enough to have the structure pop off, unless you're heavy-handed.

a 3 hole beam works quite nicely.

Wait... how does that improve anything? I understand how people don't like the backs of beams to be exposed, but that's just replacing a beam with a different beam... not much of an improvement.

Tahu looks great in gold but not in silver.

I disagree. Silver can go well with any of the Toa colors and look great. Gold looks good with the 3 Toa it's on in this wave, but putting silver on all 3 of those toa makes them look better. (I will admit that Onua looks phenomenal with Purple and Gold just because those are my college colors (LSU)).

I don't like Tahu in either generation. He's too much of a hot head to be a capable leader.

I agree with that. However, maybe, just maybe we'll see the toa grow as characters this time around and see Tahu mature a little from just being a hothead to actually becoming likable. I realize now that I only liked him as a kid because he was red and controlled fire...his attitude is terrible! :o

Tahu... Tahu Tahu Tahu.

  • Mata: Tahu Mata is the quintessential G1 Toa, although I may be biased there due to him being my second Bionicle set (my first was a mask pack - go figure). The Kanohi Hau is iconic, and the fire sword gives him a certain je ne sais quoi that makes him feel like a leader should. The major issue is of course the leg manoeuvrability.

  • Nuva: Tahu Nuva was the only version of Tahu I never got. Now that he was dual wielding two swords, Tahu looked a lot more powerful - and what lovely swords they were. The Nuva armour and legs were a wonderful addition to his design... But what wasn't nice was that godawful mask. The thing had a wet, gooey aesthetic and shape that just did not work. Easily my least favourite Kanohi Nuva - and that's saying something, as I really don't like any of them. Oh and of course, Tahu Nuva had the same issue with his hips as Tahu Mata did.

  • Mistika: Tahu's Mistika form was intriguing. The deviation away from a sword was uncomfortable, but understandable considering the airborne theme 2008 had going. The jet engines were positioned superbly, and the new version of the Hau still stands up today as a gorgeous mask design. The big issue with this version of Tahu was of course the Piraka build - he had a stout, squished up body, with long gangly limbs, which was very very peculiar.

  • Stars: Stars Tahu was a really nifty little tribute to the red-clad hothead himself. The new, Metru head compatible Hau was beautiful - and to get a gold version in the same set was awesome! While the Agori/Avtoran build leaves a lot to be desired, I think it worked in portraying Tahu's traditional look with period-appropriate parts. The silver hilt on the sword was stupid, however.

  • Okoto: If you know me, then you'll know that I love G2. Tahu's G2 iteration is no exception. From the regal flared leg armour, to the Gundam-esque blades on his back, Tahu's foray into the CCBS is wonderful. The fireswords are incredible, and serve as a great tribute back to not only Tahu Nuva, but also Toa Lhikan. The Mask of Fire is a wonderful looking mask - not quite as close to the Hau as I'd have liked, but still very much the face of Tahu. Biggest let-down is the lack of thickness to the lower legs. They're lovely and broad, but very flat. Some shells on the backs of the legs, a-la Kopaka, would've looked very nice.

I found the 2015 swords Tahu uses to be the best so far by offering a few ways for the pieces to connect and be used in play.

I have heard a few complaints among my friends on the 2015 Tahu mask, but nobody could put their finger on why exactly it didn't appear to capture quite the same essence, until I suggested the largest difference was...

The eyes are slightly smaller, and on a mask hasn't grown nearly as much as the body has over the years, it gives the effect of a smaller sized head, or at least a heavily fortified mask which would perhaps be a better fit for Lewa or Onua, since Tahu benefits from his Mask of Shielding  and arguably requires less bulky features.

Aside from bulky shoulders (an issue I have with the 2015 Kopaka and Gali as well), I would say from head to toe the rest of the armour seems perfectly divided up and the colour scheme works great!
