What Was the Last Album You Listened to?

Jar by Superheaven (formerly Daylight). been looking for some decent modern grunge (throwback or revival or whatever) type stuff and their name kept coming up. pretty solid stuff, definitely captures the 90s grunge sound well, especially stuff like Stone Temple Pilots.

slightly ticked though because I found out afterward that it had been available as a free download up until recently and I missed it.

Listened to the 灰の日 (which Google tells me translates to The Day of the Ash) demo by 夢中夢 [Mutyumu].

It's a modern classical/post-rock sort of thing, and is pretty excellent. It's not as amazing as the two albums that followed it, not being as experimental or eccentric, and lacking the avant-garde metal elements which those two introduced, instead having dark ambient elements which make it feel a whole lot more relaxed, but it's still an excellent album, especially for a demo. They did actually rework the title track from this demo for their second album, so it's interesting to hear a much earlier version of that song.

The demo isn't terribly well known, so this is the only song from it I could find on YouTube:

The last complete one I listened to was Daft Punk's Human After All. Here's my favorite track from it, The Brainwasher:

HAA and Random Access Memories are my favorite albums by Daft Punk. And since Daft Punk is probably my favorite artist group, HAA and RAM are my favorite albums out there.

Ten by Pearl Jam.

always sort of actively disliked Pearl Jam based on the newer stuff I'd heard, but I've been on a grunge kick lately and Ten is regarded as a classic of that style so I checked it out. I actually dig it quite a bit, it's a pretty solid album.

can't link it because of profanity but the song I would link if I could is "Even Flow".

Very good song :)

Underworld- Symphony X. So far, this is the best album I've heard come out this year.

got my copy of Holographic Violence by Grave Babies in the mail yesterday and gave it a couple listens. fantastic album, definitely an out-of-left-field favorite of 2015 for me.

it's a dark, weird, sometimes nightmarish fusion of retro goth rock, shoegaze, grunge, and industrial. I've likened it to sounding like what would happen if The Sisters of Mercy and My Bloody Valentine had a baby, gave it up for adoption, and it was raised by Alice in Chains and Nine Inch Nails.

here's one of the more conventional-sounding goth rock tracks: https://soundcloud.com/hardlyartrecords/eternal-on-on

and one of the weirder, more sinister Alice in Chains-influenced heavy tracks: https://soundcloud.com/hardlyartrecords/war-black-bug

speaking of Alice in Chains: listening once again to their masterpiece and one of my favorite albums ever, Dirt, at this moment. never gets old.

Boris at Last -Feedbacker- by Boris, which I can confirm is still one of the best albums ever recorded. It's an atmospheric masterpiece, going through many movements and soundscapes. Sometimes it's slow and calm, sometimes it's heavy and it rocks, sometimes it's just noise.

It's actually pretty good at showing a lot of the sides of Boris' music, containing drone, drone metal, noise, noise rock, post-rock and touches of sludge metal and psychedelic rock. Which isn't even close to all the genres Boris have done, but it's a nice showcase. And there's of course also great examples of why Wata is my favourite guitarist.

The whole album is just one 44 minute song, so I guess that makes picking a sample easy:

well my actual last last album was Abyss by Chelsea Wolfe yet again, which I've decided is my AotY for now and one of my new favorite albums overall (song here)

but since I already posted about that last time I listened to it, the last album I listened to before that was Crusher by Grave Babies. a lot of people seem to prefer it to their new album, but I don't think I agree. it's definitely good, but the lo-fi production is grating and a lot of the songs just sort of blur together.

I won't link a song from it because of the album art but the one I would if I could would be "No Fear".

oh, and before that I also listened to the new Disturbed album Immortalized out of morbid curiosity. maybe it's just the nostalgia bias talking since they were my hard rock gateway band in high school, but aside from a couple tracks I actually thought it was pretty solid. not great, but solid.

"Emotion" - Carly Rae Jepsen; I came into this album largely unfamilar with Jepsen's work, but was tipped off by "Billboard" that this was a great pop album.  And yes, I did enjoy it; as it's got some great pop tracks in the vein of Jepsen's prior hits.  Is it one of my favorite albums of 2015?  Probably not, but still I liked it and may start looking into Jepsen's other two albums.

The self-titled by Hollywood Vampires. It's kind of a supergroup with Alice Cooper and Johnny Depp, and it's basically them rocking out and having fun in a love letter to the 60s and 70s, accompanied by tons of guests, including Dave Grohl, Sir Christopher Lee, Sir Paul McCartney, Orianthi, Joe Perry, etc. It's mostly really cool covers of songs from that era, but there's some original songs too.

I enjoyed it a great deal. It's just an incredibly fun album to listen to, and you can tell that everyone involved is loving it. It's also nice to finally hear Alice Cooper's voice on something new again, as it's been four years since his last album.

As a sample, I really dig this version of Alice's classic School's Out, which includes a partial cover of Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2. He's actually been doing this live for a few years, including when I saw him back in 2011, and it's nice to have a studio version of it. The two songs transition into one another surprisingly well.

Beautitudes, by Brain Stanley. I would provide a music sample, but I cannot seem to find it anywhere on the internet, meaning I will be the first to do that (later). :D

This album is New Age Christian music sung in Aramaic, an ancient Levantine language that the Gospels were originally written in (meaning that there is a twist to ethnic ancient Aramaic patterns with modern-day music theories and some instruments/noises). Each song repeats a sentence in different ways from a chapter from the Book of Matthew. Most songs are beautiful (especially when you look at the translations in the little CD booklet), but a couple come across as being annoying. Quite a shame really.
