Ah lego racers... probably one of my favorite games I ever owned for the N64.... *Sighs wistfully* memories. Also was quite enjoyable to watch you play.

I enjoyed the first episode of your new series. :)

I've actually never heard of this game until I saw this topic. It looks like a lot of fun to play. The customization of the vehicles and character also looks really good. I look forward to the next episode.

I actually have this game for PC. I got it at a thrift store in a quadruple pack along with both lego island games and lego racers 2 for $3.

Lego Racers and its sequel are by far two of my favorite pre-Traveler's Tales Lego video games, alongside the original Lego Island and Lego Alpha Team. I would so buy a modern day Lego cart racer featuring current themes, characters and vehicles.

Hey, I remember playing Lego Racers back in the day. :)  Watching you play this game sure did bring back a lot of memories. To be honest, I had initially forgotten a lot of details about this game, but once I saw this episode, I immediately remembered a lot of things (such as a green brick and all three booster bricks practically teleports you into first place). I never made it past the third stage, but then again, I was only a nine-year-old kid when I used to play it.

I've actually been thinking about trying this game again after all these years, but unfortunately, the copy that I used to have seems to have vanished. :(  Any ideas on where I could find a copy these days?

Always had it on PC so never had a controller for it, so I know I probably would suck at it. Was totally prepared to scrutinise all your powerup tactics but you pretty much used all the ones I used to use. Once you know the layout you only mess up if you mess up your patterns. The fun for me was to go through the circuits and not go after the turbo powerups ever, and see if you can still win the circuit. Don't think I was able to do that with the final circuit ever, but the others it was possible. I know this game a little too well.

The second game was always harder to have a perfect strategy due to the Mario Kart nature of the powerups, but in story mode once you get the permanent powerups it gets much harder to lose.

Next time you go to that space one in the first circuit, point out how the other shortcut works, the one with the dome. I think that level had the most creative shortcuts.

Good luck with the VV time trials, some of those were really tough. And show off the test track as well sometime for novelty. Yeah, I liked this game fo' sure.

The other thing about the magma moon dome shortcut is that as you drive past the brick indicators or through the dome it will play some sounds that indicate the next pattern. From memory the higher note is the red path, lower is blue. So you can get a combo of dome shortcuts, which is especially good if the first time you go through the flicker path.

I never used the second shortcut in Kahuka's track. There was a little edge to the right of that one that either had a green powerup or a power brick (I don't remember exactly, all by muscle memory) and I would always use that for making warps. Very easy track to lap the last place people.

Similar story for the Ice World one, that was the first shortcut I ever found as well.

I actually did notice the offset wings on the first car, but I had decided not to mention it because I thought that would make me too nitpicky.

By the way, a couple weeks ago, I managed to come across a PDF of the game's manual, and it mentioned that the way you build your car affects its performance in two ways: weight and balance. Weight is a bit of a strategy choice; heavy cars have slower acceleration but turn better and have a higher top speed, while lighter cars can accelerate better but don't turn as well and have a lower top speed. Balance, on the other hand, is definitely something to be careful with because the car's performance will be affected if you put too many bricks on one side. (In fact, I noticed the car you recently built kept pulling wheelies a lot, and I think that might be because of that big heavy treasure chest on the back.)

Also mentioned in that manual was that, in order to make it though some of the later and more challenging tracks, you would need to master special techniques like the turbo start and power sliding. The former was already demonstrated, so perhaps it might be a good idea to try the later in the next episode.

I found it amusing how you gave your driver a "Benny" smiling face. If I ever get a chance to play this game again, the driver I'll create will be Benny himself (or at least as close as I can get to him). When I used to play this game as a kid, it took me a while to get past the second stage, but I never got past the third stage, so everything that'll come after the next episode will be entirely new to me.

The second episode was just as entertaining as the first. It's cool seeing all the shortcuts in the areas. And seeing all the combinations for the power ups is still cool too.

I look forward to the next episode! :)

For a long time I though the ledge that cut across the cave was the shortcut.  I was surprised to find that it isn't.

I don't remember ever looking at the manual, and it's possible I never actually had it in the first place.  Thanks for the info, I should probably go look that up too.

I use the power slide constantly.  As far as I'm concerned it's the only way to turn. :P

(To non-players: power slide is basically the "drifting" of this game, as it lets you take sharper corners.  Any time you hear the tires screech and the little skid patches appear behind the car is a power slide.)

Bionicle: The Game... quite a nice choice. I remember asking for the this game when it first came out, but for some reason I never got it. I've always wondered how how good (or bad) this game actually was, and this is the first time I've ever seen any gameplay of it at all. It looks pretty interesting, even though it looks rather complicated compared to most other Lego video games. The only problem with this video is that it kept lagging a lot, making it difficult to see what was going on. (Come to think of it, this seems to be similar to what happened in some of the later episodes of when you played Bionicle Heroes. Perhaps the cause of the lagging problem might be similar to what happened back then.)

I don't think the game is really more "complicated" than other games, but it certainly isn't stuck in the formula of "switch to this character, break this, collect pieces" that basically all current LEGO games are.  It's a lot more simple in its own right, with most of the challenge being jumping and shooting, albeit with varying levels of button-timing difficulty.

Also the stuttering will unfortunately be present in the first few videos, because it wasn't something that was happening in-game, but in the recording of the game.  I'm using a different recording method for my current series than I did for Heroes, which solves some of the file size issues but apparently can present some problems of its own.  I'll have to do a bit of testing before I do the next chunk of recording.

I really liked the Alien stage in your latest video. That was probably my favorite out of all the stages shown here.

Also, does anyone else think that the statues of the heads in the beginning of the third level kind of look like Mata heads with giant noses? I don't know why, but that is what they looked like to me. :P

I look forward to the next episode!

Grey for Castle levels, Yellow for Pirate levels, Beige/Sand for Adventurer, and Blue for Space levels (I think RR's level is blue as well?)

Man, it bothered me for ages that Nightmare-athon had no shortcut and spent ages looking for one, but I'd never heard that there was an area that could've been one. I think when clipping through the walls near the dragon I could see some powerups, but I don't remember. Anyway, something I didn't know, hooray!

Had a lot of trouble with this and Gypsy Moth's circuits, Adventure Temple Trail is my least favourite in the game because basically if you stuff up once it's all over (a lot of the time anyway). Warp all the time. Alien Rally Asteroid however is my favourite track, a lot of fun.

Very familiar with the skeleton cackling as this was always my standard racer when I would install the game. It features at least one brick from each "set" once you completed each one, including the time trials (though I don't remember what KK brick[s] I used). On the licence for BMR it was always the angry face. Not sure why I'm saying this.

After seeing the four tracks in this episode, I now remember why I never managed to get past this stage back when I played this game many years ago, because some of those tracks look quite hard (especially for someone who had never known about the jump start or power sliding, like I did). Kinda disappointing that the tracks for stages 4, 5, and 6 are just mirror images from the ones in stages 1, 2, and 3 respectively, but I guess I should be glad that I haven't been missing out on as much as I thought. (I assume the only unique track we have now yet to see will be the very final race.)

By the way, you forgot to show us the car set you unlocked in this episode (Basil's car set), so you might want to do that at the beginning of the next episode.

Quite unfortunate that the video issues will persist for this series, but at least it's good to know ahead of time which episodes will be affected.

I find it interesting that the music in Tahu's level is set up in a similar way to most levels of Bionicle Heroes (regular version, battle version, and final battle). (In case if you were wondering, I think the three lightstones you missed were in that Nui-Jaga battle area near the end of the previous episode.)

Kopaka's level really caught me by surprise in that it entirely consists of sliding down a slope or mountainside (and I can definitely sympathize with how frustratingly difficult it can be to collect everything on such a level). By the way, why did you keep saying someone's name whenever Kopaka spoke? Is he voiced in this game by someone famous? (Also, interesting that Turaga Nuju had a speaking role in this game, while he had none in the Mask of Light movie.)

Finally, based on that cutscene at the end of this episode, I guess Tahu and Kopaka are the only ones you can play in their Toa Mata form, while the others will be in their Toa Nuva form.

I have Bionicle the Game on my old Xbox, and it is a bit of a frustrating game as I feel has been shown in this video. The story is less a coherent story and more a mashup of "Bionicle 2002-2003 Greatest Hits." But I liked playing it as a kid.

But be warned, Kopaka is not the last vehicle level, we still have Pohatu's mine car and Tahu Nuva's lava surfing levels ahead... Lewa's level also will have a lot of wacky glide mechanics coming on.

Framerate aside, I enjoyed your latest video of Bionicle: The Game.

Kopaka's level is probably one of my favorites of the game. It has good visuals and some interesting stuff happens in it, like the chase with the boulder. The only part I don't like about it is the first person view that takes over for like 30 seconds before going back to normal. This point of view only occurs in this level, and for such a short period of time. It makes me wonder why it included in the game at all. But aside from that, the level is cool.

Finally, based on that cutscene at the end of this episode, I guess Tahu and Kopaka are the only ones you can play in their Toa Mata form, while the others will be in their Toa Nuva form.

That is correct. Tahu and Kopaka are the only Toa that are playable in their Toa Mata forms. Unfortunately, it is also Kopaka's only playable level, as he is the only Toa Nuva who isn't playable in the game.

Hey, thanks for the little mention. :)  I liked that you decided to actually test the claims of the manual, so now we all know that the only real factor in the performance of these cars is the just chassis (and it was nice to see that test track, too). As for the starting boost that you also mentioned from the manual, I recall it saying that you had to hit the accelerator right at the instant the word "GO" appeared after the countdown. Based on my personal experience with this game recently, that does in fact seem to be the case.

As you might've just figured out, yes, I did manage to find the old copy of this game I had a while ago and have started playing it a bit. So far, I've already gotten past the first circuit and plan to try the second circuit sometime soon. In addition, I have also been going through the Time Trials, where if you can beat a certain time on all of the tracks, then you'll unlock another car set (I think the name of the driver you're racing against here is Veronica Voltage, or something like that). Since half of the circuits are mirror images of the other half, the Time Trials are for the tracks from only the first three circuits, though the power-ups are set up a little differently for the sake of helping to improve your time. The first set of tracks were doable, but the second set were quite a challenge. I've managed to beat all four tracks from that set, but it was definitely frustrating in that it required a lot of "threading the needle", so to speak, where missing just one green brick speed boost could mean the difference between whether or not you actually beat the opponent's time, so I can't even imagine how difficult the third and final set of tracks will be. With that being said, do you think you might be interested in doing an additional episode after completing all the circuits to show us some of these Time Trials?

Anyway, I'd just like to say that, from what we saw in this episode, particularly in the last race, it seems Johnny Thunder is much more capable of using those grappling hooks than Redbeard was.

Edit: I forgot to mention, I had to click the link in this topic to watch the recent episode because I didn't see it on the playlist with the previous episodes, so you might want to get that done whenever you get a chance.

One thing I learned from this series: Your name is pronounced "B-F-A." I always thought it was one syllable - "Bfah."  :tounge:

I'm enjoying the show. How many more episodes of LEGO Racers can we expect?

Your car was giving you some trouble in that third race. But unexpected stuff like that is what makes watching videos like this so much fun. :)

I look forward to the next episode.

Man, those framerate issues are really becoming problematic. I actually lost count of how many times the video froze for quite a few seconds. Since you said that we can expect this problem for the first four episodes, I'm guessing it'll happen one more time next month, then it should (hopefully) be much better, right?

Anyway, You mentioned that the music for the Gali level sounds similar to the music from the Voya Nui Online Game from 2006. After listening a bit closely, I can say that it's not exactly the same, but it is rather similar.

Oh, and one thing I'd like to mention about Lego Racers. I had mentioned earlier (episode 2, I think) that I had noticed your frequent difficulty with keeping all four wheels on the ground. At the time, I thought it had to do with how you built you car, but since that doesn't seem to be a real factor after all, I'm guessing it has more to do with the track you're on. For example, (from my personal experience) the track Ice Planet Pathway can be particularly troublesome and leave you bouncing on your rear bumper for quite a distance if you try to use a speed booster while going uphill.

Always great to see another episode of this. Kinda interesting to see one of those lesser racers get so incredibly far ahead in the third race, by hey, strange things do occasionally happen (as I'll explain from personal experience later in this post).

As I was making my own efforts going through this game, I made some rather interesting discoveries (or rather confirmed what was mentioned in the manual) regarding how the circuit races work. If you finish a race anywhere outside the top three (4th, 5th, or 6th), then the circuit automatically ends and you must start the entire circuit all over again. If you successfully make it through all four races and you end up anywhere in the top three in the points, then that'll be enough to unlock the next circuit, but to unlock the current circuit's car set, you must finish first in the points. I made all of these discoveries as I was going through Gypsy Moth's circuit (the one you'll be doing next month). My first successful attempt resulted in a second place finish in the points for me, so I unlocked the next circuit, but not Gypsy Moth's car set. So I tried again, and with two wins and two second places, my points ended up tied with Gypsy Moth, yet that was apparently enough to unlock the car set, so I guess that means you'll always be placed ahead in the event of a tie. Feel free to mention these discoveries of mine in your next episode.

As you might have guessed, I made a lot more progress through my own copy of this game this past month. In fact, I actually managed to completely beat the entire game (winning all circuits and time trials) for the very first time in my life. :D  And let me tell you, I had something quite peculiar happen to me in the final race against Rocket Racer. I was almost halfway through the final lap with Rocket Racer right behind me. I already had two white power-ups and ahead of me were a red, a blue, and a green power-up, with another white one just a little further ahead. So naturally, I go for the green brick, grab the final power-up, and teleport ahead. But once I came back onto the track, my car suddenly came to a halt, and it took me a second to figure out what had just happened. Somehow, Rocket Racer must've fired a grappling hook onto me right at the moment I teleported, so even though I still jumped ahead, it was still able to briefly stop me once the speed boost was over. (Though considering how many tight turns that track has, I'd imagine that all he managed to do was get slammed against a wall rather than getting pull ahead with me.) Fortunately, the grappling hook wore off after a few seconds, allowing me to finish the lap and thus win the race and the game. I only wish I had recorded a video of that incident, because that was definitely something that I'd imagine would almost never happen.

Anyway, you still haven't answered my question from last month. After you complete all seven circuits, will you be doing an additional episode to go through some or all of the time trials?

Probably, since at the very least it'll prolong the need to find a new game to play :P

The Ice World one is notoriously difficult, that was always the last one I was able to do because you can never stuff up if you want to succeed. I think the Royal Castle one was also particularly bad as well, I don't remember.

I've NEVER noticed that it's Baron von Barron. Nor that weird glitch where you were in "6th" place for the whole last lap of the Islander course. But it's always great when one of the non-champs wins a race, and with warps too. Royal King is good for that on that track, a lot of those in circuits 3 and 6 do it as well, and everyone does it in the final circuit, where I think Black Knight (very original name) is the most accomplished at it.

Random aside, but it was pretty cheap that Ann Droid, Islander, Willa the Witch, Black Knight and Gail Storm all have the exact same car. And only two of those make any sense. Come on.

I forgot to mention a few other things.

I'm not that great at building custom models, so instead of creating my own driver and car, I had used one of the four pre-existing options: Turbo Charger (I believe the other three are called Scooter, Joan of Cart, and Robo Racer). I won every single circuit and time trial with that one guy, so I've pretty much proven that it really is possible to complete the entire game without ever building anything.

In an earlier episode, you had pointed out the interesting observation that when you're selecting a track to race on, the color of the image borders are either blue, yellow, or grey. Upon closer study, I've noticed that not only are these colors associated with particular themes (blue for Space, yellow for Adventurers, and grey for Pirates and Castle), but also so are the way that the featured characters stand idly. Castle characters widely glance around, Space characters slightly wave their arms around, and Pirates and Adventurer characters just stand with one hand on their hip. (And of course, since Rocket Racer doesn't fall into any of these four themes, he just does his own thing.)

As for the difficulty of the time trials, I can say from experience that half of them can be very tricky. Not only do you need to figure out what the best course should be (knowing which power-ups to pick up, and which shortcuts are worth taking or avoiding), but you'll often need to execute that plan flawlessly, where bumping into one wall or missing just one power-up can mean the difference between success or failure. (Not to mention that, unlike all the other A.I.s, Veronica Voltage does use shortcuts.) Personally, I found Pirate Skull Pass to be the toughest one of all. I frequently ended up restarting before finishing the first lap (so that's less than half a minute), and it took me over an hour before I finally got it right, so I must've retried that one over a hundred times. Yeah, definitely a very tough challenge.

BIONICLE Episode 4.

This is the last episode from the original recording block, so hopefully by the next time I record I can figure out exactly why the game capture was so choppy.

Not quite as bad as the previous episode, but the framerate issues were still noticeable. It was rather difficult to understand what was going on early in the episode with Gali's arena battle or whatever you might call it, but once you got to Pohatu's level, the video issues no longer seemed quite obviously as problematic. Perhaps it might have something to do with Gali's level in particular.

Looks like you pretty much got the exact same finishing results that I got: win the first two races, then finish second to Gypsy Moth in the remaining two races and win the tie at 100 points. Though I will give you credit for managing to achieve that right on the first try, especially on that last race where you were in last place at one point. Had I been in the middle of that last race, I honestly would've cut my losses and tried the entire circuit all over again. Also, I have to say that you sure do come up with some interesting drivers and cars. "Tank You" gave me quite a good laugh.

Regarding your comment about the next episode being short or long depending on how many tries it'll take to win the final circuit, I'm very certain that'll also apply to the time trials, if you decide to do them. The first few tracks are easy enough that I think you could fit a few into a single episode, while the latter tracks are so challenging that I wouldn't be surprised if each of them take up an entire episode on their own. Heck, I wouldn't even be surprised if some of these difficult time trials take so many tries that you end up cutting out many of the failed tries to shorten the episodes.
