Elemental habitats

Recommended Posts

The problem is that only the 6 classics lived outside the MU in a natural habitat. But the other elements were to have lived on Mata Nui island, this is what I'd say.

Plasma  -  In areas of unstable natural energy (volcanoes, energised protodermis, gysers).

Lightning  - Mountain peaks, where lightning is likely to strike, or near the coast.

The Green - Swamp, possibly jungle.

Gravity - Ravines, underground.

Sonics - Somewhere quiet and far away from everyone else, somesort of sheltered valley perhaps, or somehwere snowy.

Psionics - Near and among all the other elements.

Light - Mountains above clouds.

Dark - Caves.

Magnetism - Near the poles if they were to exist on Mata Nui.

Iron - Desert, wasteland.

Post in the spoiler tag is fanon I found on tumblr.

I believe that every element had a role to play, so they were distributed where the GSR needed them most. E.g. Ba-Matoran would be found in the feet of the GSR to stabilize him, De-Matoran would be situated in the head to serve as the ears of Mata Nui, more examples I can't remember.

I also had this fanon about the matoran of the primary and secondary elements living together and this is what I came up with:

  • Fire and plasma matoran would live in Ta-Koro due to their mutual love of heat. The Su-Matoran would take the lava farming jobs while the Ta-Matoran would be allocated to contribute to the guard. Occasionally, Vakama would have to break up any fighting that resulted from their tempers flaring.
  • Water, lightning and psionic matoran would live in Ga-Koro due to some offensive claims by the other turaga that they would distract their villagers from their jobs if they were to stay in the other villages. The Ce-Matoran would act as teachers and scholars, the Vo-Matoran would operate machinery while the Ga-Matoran would continue with their normal jobs. Turaga Nokama
  • Air and plantlife matoran would live in Le-Koro due to their love of nature. The Le-Matoran would continue with their normal jobs while the Bo-Matoran worked as healers or farmers. Some matoran would also teach each other a creative art such as music or flower arranging.
  • Stone, magnetism and iron matoran would live in Po-Koro due to there not being enough space in Onu-Koro to fit the population of iron matoran. The Po-Matoran would continue with their tradition of carving solid rock, but the Fe-Matoran often used scrap metal to create statues as glorious as the stone heads that line the path to the entrance of the village. Fa-Matoran were employed as tour guides and led anyone who was lost to their destination. The Fe-Matoran and Fa-Matoran would engage in fencing and the Po-Matoran sooned picked up the new sport, teaching the other two tribes how to play Kohlii in return for learning how to fence.
  • Earth, magnetism and gravity matoran would live in Onu-Koro due to the Ba-Matoran requesting to stay in the earth village. The Fa-Matoran would guide the Ba-Matoran if they got lost in the darkness. It was common amongst the magnetic matoran to mistake Onepu for a mere Ba-Matoran and refer to him the wrong name.
  • Ice and sonic matoran would live in Ko-Koro due to their love of silence. Not much would be said about them since they wouldn't interact together often, except for when Nuju clicks and whistles, which was enough to give a De-Matoran a headache or push them to scream at the turaga, worsening their earaches from Nuju's bird noises.

Psionics - Near and among all the other elements.

I don't understand this, can you go into detail? Do they live in other villages or...? And why?

Av-matorans had a specific purpose, and I believe Vo-Matoran as well served to deal with the workings in regard to energy. So I think more or less they all fill their purposes. But De-Koro is located nowhere near his ears and all inhabitants of Metru Nui were matoran of the original six elements, right? Also I believe I've heard that Ba-Matoran live where there's alot of pressure or something.

Hmm well:

Plasma- some sort of extreme, probably on the side of heat or destruction, a barren scarred waste where the sun beats down and the earth spews intense energy.

Sonics- Serene, lush foothills with dense fir trees that create a solid, noise cancelling barrier, occasionally a wind may whistle through but it is otherwise silent.

Lightning- As everyone would say, the only place for them is a high rocky peak, filled with rich metal deposits that attract fierce storms that never leave.

Gravity- A deep ravine, deepest in the world, goes deeperthan the mines of Onu-Koro and deeper still, the hardest villages to reach and possibly the worst to try living in if you aren't a matoran, toa, or turaga of Gravity.

Psionics- I like to forget this element exists. moving on...

Iron- What little is left of the metal-rich hills Iron matoran lived in is hard to see, for they have replaced almsot hte entire surface with their mines, forges, and workshops. a mix of Onu and Ta matoran often drift in, looking for these rather specific lines of work, but nobody works with iron like a matoran of the element.

Jungle- Deep, thick, steaming swampland. so twisted and covered in vines that it becomes hard for non-plantlife matoran to pass through, patches of solid land give hold for beautiful gardens of the most alien an exotic flowers.

Magnetism- An icy flow as far north as you can get, and extending further still. here, ores and rocks and the metallic bones of rahi levitate off the ground from the astounding magnetic activity. Matoran villages here are built on monolithic lodestones that jut from the ice and reach into the heavens.

...I may have gotten carried away describing some of those.

I pretty much imagined that each had villages, not tied to their elements entirely, but had more city-type of layouts. Like Plasma can create clear screens, so I imagine them in a more high tech structure

I think I'd agree with most of Lalonde's stuff, save those of the lightning and magnetism matoran. I think matoran if magnetism would be great navigators, and live near ports and barren areas a lot. Living near nutty magnetic fields while being able to detect those might get tiring, in my opinion. As for lightning matoran, I think they'd live in a city or village of power plants, like a energy-producing version of Le-Metru. They'd probably power the chutes of villages around them.

About psionics matoran, well... the ones listed make sense as to their function (i.e. maintaining the robot's transport system - the chutes - and other stuff) but what use are psionics matoran? I can only think of them being scientists, like Ga-matoran on metru nui, but that means 2/3 of all female matoran are teachers and scientists.

Also, about ba-matoran... nah, I doubt that they'd live in "the deepest ravine in the world'. Maybe deep places, mostly underground, or lower-lying places. But nothing that extreme.

I kind of imagine them as the opposite of De-Matoran, thriving on socialisng with others. This is because as matoran of mental energy, they love interacting with other minds.

This is my headcanon:

Plasma:

Living in barren deserts, with hellish heat and blinding sunlight. Sort of like a cross between Tatooine and the surface of the planet Mercury. They live in small stone huts for when the heat gets too hot even for them.

Gravity:

Since their purpose would be to ensure the artificial gravity works inside of Mata-Nui, I imagined they lived in caves that led into the interior of the MU- the "behind the scenes" if you will. In these caves, there are artificial gravity generators that let you walk up the cave walls, up to the ceiling, where the villages are located to avoid discovery. This is important, because the artificial gravity in the GSR is vital to the stability of life within it. Also, because of their vital role, Gravity Matoran have more of an understanding of what exactly the MU is, and thus keep themselves secluded to guard the secret. This is why we never hear about them in the main canon.

Magnetism:

These Matoran live near Iron Matoran, (as they find themselves very attracted to them for some reason...)

They are also vital to the stability of the MU as well, though they have less of an idea about the "big secret" than the Gravity Matoran.

They live in villages, close to Iron Matoran, whom they have good friendships with. However, unlike the Iron Matoran, they do not live in metal cities. Would you like it if you always got stuck to the walls of your house?

Lightning:

They live on the tops of mountains, always clamoring for the next big storm. When they hear thunder, all the matoran rush outside and wave their metal rods into the sky, hoping to catch a lightning bolt.

They are generally very docile, but get restless very easily. They also have a lot of dormant potential and power. When the right moment comes - BANG! - you won't even know what hit you.

The Green:

Swamps and jungles, living in places that even a Le-Matoran wouldn't dare touch. You wouldn't recognize their villages until you were right on top of them - they keep them very well camouflaged to hide from predatory Rahi.

Sonics:

Sonic matoran live in very quiet areas. Loud noises bother them. You may find them in quiet valleys, the clearings of forests, basically any place that a Hobbit would also call home. They're also not very fond of adventures either. What a headache those would give them!

Iron:

Iron matoran are very ambitious, always leading the matoran world in technology. They live just about anywhere they can. The more impractical and difficult it would be to settle a location, the more attractive it is to them. Forget villages: these matoran build full-fledged cities. It's said that they planned the blueprints for Metru-Nui itself. Their cities are dominated by skyscrapers. They are also the most social of matoran, and know how to network- they tend to have strong relations with Vo, Ta, and Onu matoran. After all, if you're working with Iron, you need matoran to mine, smelt, and power your creations. Unfortunately, their ambition can get the best of them, sometimes for the worst. Because they are master weapon makers, they have attracted the attention of the Vortixx and certain Dark Hunters and Makuta. This puts them in the precarious situation of trying their best to improve life for their fellow matoran, but also trying to stay on the good side of these villains. And they can't complain too much- at least the Vortixx and Dark Hunters pay well...

Psionics:

These matoran love seeking after wisdom, thought, and have a strong connection to the "spiritual" side of the MU. They are masters of epic poetry, and love to impart their wisdom to others. They have magnificent golden cities, built among the mountains where the sun rises. Spires of majestic temples pierce the sky. Anyone who enters their cities comes out with new eyes, seeing the world in a new light. Their domain is the Shangri-La of the MU.

However, the Great Beings knew that such powers of the mind, and the knowledge and wisdom they possessed, would destroy the universe if put into the wrong hands. Many of their turaga, for instance, have such a strong connection to the mind of Mata-Nui, that they have also discovered "the big secret". Their cities are inaccessible to matoran - few have ever visited them - and their matoran are rarely seen outside of them, though rumours say there is a small colony in the domain of Artakha...

Light:

They live amongst all types of matoran, to stay out of sight from the Makuta. However, their homeland was one of grand mountains, dry deserts, wet streams, lush forests. and sweeping plains. They had industrious but modest villages. Humble and peaceful, they were a matoran that all other tribes looked up to and respected. However, since the growing threat of the Makuta, many have become scattered - both by choice, and by direction of the Order of Mata-Nui - to escape extinction from the sadistic Makuta. Now, only a few small settlements of light villages can be found.

There you go! That took entirely too long to write out. But I rather like my neat view of the MU.

Wow. I think this is pretty cool, and well thought out. Except for the bit about Matoran of Magnetism - they aren't exactly magnetic. According to BS01, they have "an internal compass and a better sense of direction than other Matoran". I still think it's cute that you say they're, uh, attracted  to Matoran of iron, though. :^D

Ok, my own ideas:

Lightning: Stormy mountaintops, where else?

Magnetism: Nowhere in particular, they're usually nomadic. When they do settle, they like to live by major roads.

Plasma: Humid, steaming swamps, where will-o-wisps of plasma float around at night.

Gravity: Thanks to their great balance and stability, they live right on sheer cliff faces.

Sonics: They usually live in highly secluded valleys, often by streams due to their calming noise.

Plantlife: Dense temperate rainforests, occluded with thick underbrush and hanging banners of moss.

Iron: They don't mind big cities, but prefer mining villages in river valleys where ore can be collected.

( The bunny slippers hiss and slither into the shadows. ) -Takuaka: Toa of Time

What if the Toa you know best were not destined to be? Interchange: The epic begins

I agree with most of the statements said above, if not all.  If there were to be an element that would move to Metru Nui I believe it would be Fa-Matoran or Fe-Matoran due to their affinities with metal and cities.  Each of the other elements seem out of place in a city, except for maybe Vo-Matoran actually ow that I think about it.

For the first time in four years ... the Bionicle story comes to a close

with the Bionicle Disunity trilogy

Were you as shocked as I was upon learning the Bionicle serials "The Yesterday Quest" and "The Powers That Be" would never be finished?

Did you know that Lego won't allow Greg Farshtey to complete the story because they want to focus on marketing G2?

My close friend The Mad Great Being has been working tirelessly on completing the Bionicle story ... and now it is finally finished. His writing style stays

true to the integrity of the characters that we know and love.  His plot ideas are something only comparable to Greg Farshtey's.

Trust me, I'm hard to please with fan-fiction.  If you liked reading Bionicle Chronicles/Adventures/Legends ... then you won't

want to miss the next best thing since learning Mata Nui was a 40-million-foot-tall robot.

I have had some thoughts about this before, and the best I've seen is Bionicle Nova Orbis by NickinAmerica on Deviant art. A map of Miro Nui and a guide to it's inhabitants are both useful for this discussion.

As for me, the best I came up with was an idea for a theoretical third generation world, and I should explain, the starting island had more than six tribes. Each tribe of matoran was based in one village and each had some sort of mystic-mechanical wonder that was built by the turaga who founded the island. Four of the ideas include:

Vo-Koro, built on the mountain range just north of Ga-Wahi, it serves as the base of the matoran of lightning. Standing over the village is the Great Thunder Tower. Carved with runes that shepherd of storms to it, and draw all the lightning from them into it's self. Without this great wonder, the other villages would not have their mechanism work, as each bolt of lightning is split and scattered across the land to power the marvel in each village. Without, every village would die and the land would fall to ruin. The side effect is that Vo-Koro is constantly under storm clouds, with bucketing rain and great bolts of lightning flying across the sky, making it a dark and under-populated place.

Su-Koro, a massive ship with an invincible hull, which is a good thing as it swims in a great chasm in the land filled with a never ending supply of raw plamsa. This million degree lake would over run the island where it not for the tireless labours of Su-Koro's crew, which operate it's great internal factory and ensures that every piece of plasma that enters the ship from it's front maw is processed into more useful forms, such a medicines, food and even air (no plants allowed on board). Although the ship only needs a crew of about 20 at any one time, about 200 matoran live on board, taking shifts and keeping their collective spirits up. The Su-Matoran that aren't posted on board at any particular date inhabit various fortified hovels along the rim of the great plasma lake, preparing for their turn on Su-Koro.

De-Koro sits as a lonely village at the tip of the northern cliff, at the very end of a long and winding tombolo, known only as the road of screaming. Around De-Koro is it's wonder, a wall of white stone, that perfected reflects and distorts all sounds in the local area until they become twisted an unbearable shriek like sounds. Only within the wall, is their peace and quite, as a secondary affect of the wall is to reduce sound within it, keeping De-Koro nice and quite for the matoran that dwell there.

Bo-koro, the heavy mountain. A solitary mountain between the Everstom Mountains and the Glacial heights, it's weight is so great that it produce's it's own gravity. The Bo-matoran (who in this idea have the ability to sense gravitational disturbances, not resist high pressure) never stay their but instead wonder the land as merchants, wayfinders and rangers, using their home to guide them along their journeys. They only return once a year for the Bo-Koro festival, a massive trade show and carnival unlike anything found in the other villages, with only the epic gravity of the mountain keeping most other matoran away. However, Bo-koro does serve as a place of penal exile for matoran from the other other tribes, although none know of the Marvel that keeps them there, confusing their as they try to traverse the 3d maze that the turaga keep them in. Most only stay a couple of weeks, or a handful of months at the worst, but one individual, named only Akhmou, sits down, held in place by gravity and despair, has carve rocks on the mountain for many a year. The turaga say he is imprisoned for being a trouble maker of the highest order, what this means, is unknown.

Well...I always envisioned Matoran of Lightning as living in a region with frequent lightning storms.

Matoran of Plasma would probably just live in a volcanic region, since plasma is not really a common occurrence on a tropical island.  :shrugs:

Matoran of Iron could live comfortably in an underground environment that is ore and metal rich.

Honestly, I can't really think of anything for a Matoran of Gravity.  :???:

Matoran of Plantlife would just live in a forest.

Shadow Matoran would prefer a dark region, maybe one that's underground also, or just one that's perpetually really really overcast. :P

Matoran of Sonics just want peace and quiet, maybe on a mountaintop somewhere?

Finally, Matoran of Psionics would like a region naturally high in psionic energy. That would mean someplace populated, since they would always be surrounded by the mental energy of their neighbors.
