Old, Unfinished Project

Hello, these are some old projects I was working on a time ago. I wasn't sure whether I should've posted it in my comic topic (since it's related to comics) or here. Since I wanted it more judged by the artwork itself I decided I'd rather have it here and not get anyone's hopes up. Although any mods are free to move it to wherever is most appropriate for it.

Background Info on the Comic:

When the reboot of BIONICLE was announced I was as excited as most people. Sure, it wasn't going to be in the same world but it'd have some of the same elements in it, right? It had more or less the same heroes going on an epic quest to stop evil from destroying the island. Pretty typical day in the world of BIONICLE. So I saw the new sets and was slightly underwhelmed but I figured, "Hey, it'll grow on me" and truthfully they did. I thought they were neat, I was excited to draw them and make my own side stories with them. Then I was informed through various threads on the website at the time about the simplicity of the new format of BIONICLE. A lot of my favorite concepts were gone. It seemed as though Mask Powers aren't really around, there isn't a big deal with personalizing any villagers/matoran. They stopped most of the interesting names in the series. But worst of the news was that at the time I had heard that there wasn't going to be any serialized comics from LEGO. That was really what I was looked most forward to, as I always was a fan of the comics. So I decided at the time that I was going to create my own comic and my own story based solely around the sets. It would include some familiar aspects I had come to love about the original story but with more of a twist.

I had written out an entire story for it as well as the scripts for the comics, I just never got around to it because of the actual amount of work that would be required to undergo such a project. I would say it's probably one of my favorite unfinished projects, however.

Info on the Art:

I was a particular fan of working on the drawings as they required me to think in a more story-centric point of view versus just any regular drawing. I had to purposefully think of the environment and how things would flow together in a way that would hopefully make sense to the audience.

When deciding on what I should do for the cover image, I figured that what would best fit would probably be just a map of the island since the story takes place entirely on the island, it would just make sense to show it off first to the audience. It really is an interesting and beautiful looking island that LEGO created. The island was an interesting project since most of it was just image manipulation as most people could probably tell. I found this picture of the island and started to work on designing the rest of it. I first had to remove the clouds in place and account for the missing sections that the clouds covered by redrawing them and fitting them in with the rest of the environment. After doing that it was all a matter of simplifying the colors and making sure they are best representative of each region. Since I was just trying to get the island by itself, I also had to account for what portions of the Water region of the island to remove, since most of it appears to be a marsh/swamp environment. Afterwards it was all about creating the surrounding ocean and drawing up my own clouds for the setting. I had also decided to mimic the style of the original BIONICLE Comics cover pages, with the many logos, symbols, and references in the front page.

The second page has one of my favorite BIONICLE-related drawings I had done, which is the first image on the second page. In the second page I was mainly trying to emulate the style of drawing shown in the HERO Factory comics. I think it turned out okay, but I'm still rather proud of it. I also wanted to show off an interesting time period of when the events in the story take place by showing that Makuta hadn't even made his mask as of this point, it was only just finished in the second page which displays the setting.

Speaking of Makuta's mask, I had shown my rendition of it in the second panel. Before I had considered drawing the mask I had decided that I wanted it to be incredibly accurate in any appearances it makes. This meant that I either needed to improve my art skills or make a 3d model. I decided on the latter. This is the result of that.

Makuta Mask 3d Model

This mask took quite a bit of time to create. A lot of it was trying to adapt the cartoonish appearance into the more serious appearances like that of the set masks. I mainly took the Mask of Creation as inspiration for the appearance which might be evident, I'm not truly sure. I don't really recall much of the process except for the fact that I remember being very irritated because I wasn't very fluent with the program.

I had also figured out that I wanted more characters to play a role besides the Toa. Because the villagers all have a common mask, I decided to bring back a lot of the classic masks from Generation 1. This was so they will each have a unique appearance. I also took account of changing the body types and expanding the colors of the villagers in an attempt to further diversify them. I also drew a nice little jungle village background based off of the backgrounds in the Protector of Jungle sets.

And the final image is of course, the same island as before. I merely shrunk it down, adjusted the angle to be different and drew different clouds.

Final Thoughts:

And with that I had finished the art analysis of my unfinished project. I had created so much based around this project but not all of it is actually relevant to a post in General Art. Primarily the story portion of the comic is what I have yet to write about but I'm not going to delve into that as this is mainly concerning the artwork. I'm open to any and all criticisms or questions on anything I have wrote or displayed.

Whoa, this... this is stunning. Better than many of the actually released comics. Superb lineart, superb colouring, superb finishing touches (like getting the right font etc). It's only a page but I'm fairly sure the storyboard has the same quality of the drawing, plot-wise and shots-wise.
Did you pose your sets and use pictures as references? I believe art has the power of making things interesting, and with a comic like this you can tell whatever you want. Seriously, I wouldn't be surprised if LEGO contacted you for drawing more comics sooner or later ;)
How much did it take?

About the 3d mask, I like how it's hald way between the set one and the one we see in the online episodes.

Hope we could see more of this. Nice work, really!

Soran for BIONICLE 2016 Comics confirmed!!!!

I love this with and every breath I take I love it more and more. Please! If LEGO Doesn't hire you to make official BIONICLE Comics than that will be a shame!

Thank you. The storyboards I have are explained in complete detail including the positions of characters, the poses of said characters, the backgrounds, Position of speech bubbles or text effects, etc. They're detailed enough in my opinion where I could hand it off to someone else if needed and they'd probably be able to draw it exactly as I envisioned.

For the Jungle picture I mainly used posed sets that I had available to me. For the top panel I had to use picture references. When I was creating this comic, it was before the Ekimu set was released. So it was a lot of mixing and matching from pictures people took of the set on display until eventually it was drawn to completion. The Makuta set was slightly harder to draw since at the time I wasn't sure how Ekimu was built. I couldn't see the back of the set so I had to go with people's attempts at rebuilding the set which seemed fairly accurate in hindsight. Those were only for the line art, coloring was done by figuring out a light source in the panel and going from there.

I don't have an accurate time for how long it took. At the time I was having massive computer problems which had skewed the amount of time that was necessary to finish the comic. If I were to be generous I'd say 2 weeks. This is mainly because the first page was easily finished in a day, and the 2nd page required me to finish the 3d model first before completing the page. Thanks again.

It'd take forever for me to work on those but I might revisit the project later if I'm feeling brave. I don't think that I'm experienced enough to be able to work with LEGO on a project like this but if it'd happen then I will agree that it'd be neat.

Thank for the input,
