Island Knowledge

Howdy,

*POSSIBLE GENERATION 1 SPOILERS BELOW, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.*

I've got a question regarding the knowledge that groups had on other islands existing in Generation 1. So I've been wondering if there are certain islands that were relatively unknown to the rest of the inhabitants of the Matoran Universe? My main example I'm basing this question off of is "disappearance" of the island of Artakha after the raid by Makuta Kojol. It was said that after the raid all people who knew of how to travel to the island (specifically those involved with the raid) were killed. This would make this island more or less unknown to the other inhabitants of the matoran universe. It would create a situation where they might've heard of the island's existence but it was regarded as more of a legend than fact. Is there any other islands that could have similar situations where the existence of the island is a mystery to those who are not from it.

My main questions is in regards to the islands of:

  • Daxia
  • Karzahni
  • Odina
  • Destral
  • Tren Krom's Island

If I were to be specific, I would be asking if there were knowledge of these islands before the Great Cataclysm.

Also, I'm wondering just how "secretive" they were. For example, Daxia is described as being the secret base for the Order of Mata Nui. Would this mean that the island itself is secretive where no one knows of its location, or would this imply that people know of the island's existence, but not what's on the island.

This also makes me wonder about the island of Karzahni. It's described as being a place of legend, but I'm wondering if other beings, specifically the matoran themselves, thought it was simply that, a legend. I'm curious about this one because of how the pre-Inika matoran were surprised at the island's existence when they came across it. This could be attributed to having been because of the memory loss they suffered, but still I'm not positive on that case.

Also Odina is another case where I'm curious about if its location is common knowledge among others. I am doubtful on this one because of this quote on B01 which states,

Dark Hunters were the primary residents of Odina. Old or new recruits were brought to Odina to be trained, punished or given assignments. When a potential recruit was invited to Odina, the recruit was blindfolded, or, in some cases, knocked unconscious, so that they did not know the way to the island is they failed to be recruited.

Still I'd like to say that various examples of different wars taking place have made me doubtful.

Destral I largely assume is common knowledge mainly because of the fact that it's regarded as being infamous, the Makuta were once "guardians" to the matoran and due to probable countless patrols around the island, it would most likely make it obvious where they were situated.

And finally Tren Krom's Island. For this particular example, I'm assuming that the island was something that people knew about, but not what was on the island. My reasoning points to the many times different character enlisted Tren Krom's help throughout the story and always knew where to find him. I'm curious if it's named that by the matoran. Is it something that is known in legend as being where Tren Krom is? Or is it merely described as an empty or desolate island. Could it be an island were it's regarded that everyone who has traveled to the island has gone insane? Is it a legend or renown? Or is it just another empty island to the rest of the Matoran Universe.

So this is my question that I'm wondering. How common knowledge are certain islands to the rest of the Matoran Universe inhabitants? If there are no specific examples or facts then I will gladly take your "theories" or guesses to my question.

Thank you for your time,

~Soran

I'm not sure about the other species, but most Matoran rarely left their Koro/Metru, so knowledge about other islands might be nearly non-existent.

Also, most of the Southern islands (the legs of Mata Nui) were unexplored.

But let's try to tackle the most misterious one by one:

Daxia: When the Hand of Arthaka/Order of Mata Nui made it their base, is logical to asume that they erased any record of it's existence. If a shipwreck of some lost navigator wound up on the island, they most likely left them to be killed by the local Rahi and the harsh climate.

Kahrzanni: While it was pretty well known during the early days of the universe, it's location became lost after the Turaga stopped sending Matoran there. Organizations like the Order of Mata Nui and Brotherhood of Makuta might have been aware of it's location, but never did anything there, probably because the ruler wasn't an open threat to them.

Odina: Before the Dark Hunters came there, it was a deserted island; it's geography offered nothing to potential colonists. As you noted, the DH make sure no one knows where the island is (although the OoMN knew about it). Its likely that the Shadowed One sent someone to destroy the few maps that show the island.

Destral: While the BoM was pretty infamous, is important to remember that the island had a teleportation mechanism, so no one except the Brotherhood would know of it's location. It's higly unlikely that they kept a record of the places where the island was, unless they had recurring places to teleport.

Tren Krom's Island: Although it was visited later, we have to remember that very few people knew how to get there: Mutran, the first visitor that we know of, had to track the location down by an extensive search. Brutaka and his party ended up there by mistake. Arthaka knew the location, mainly because he has an extensive knowledge of the universe.
