Stone to Wind or Earth to Metal

Recommended Posts

This is not another thread debating whether or not Earth and Stone should be combined as one element. We have enough of those threads. Instead my question is based in a hypothetical situation where they are combined into one element for a new generation of Bionicle and the designers decided to keep a team of six, who should keep the Earth + Stone fusion element (henceforth referred to as Earth for simplicity), Pohatu or Onua? And what element does the other get? And what element does the other get? I see several possible scenarios:

A) Pohatu becomes the Toa of Wind, with Lewa remaining Toa of Jungle. Pohatu would remain the loveable high speed character of G1, and it would make sense with his desert habitat - a land shaped by the unbridled wind and an open sky unblocked by forest canopy or cloud infested with water. Onua would be the solemn individual that meditates on the nature of life and contemplates battle plans by using his Earth powers to reshape his underground world in an exercise best described as 'rock gardening'. This is my preferred option, with the only disadvantage with that Pohatu would have to stop being brown, =(, and get more 'airy' colours, like orange. And we all know what an orange Pohatu looks like, although an orange and white colour scheme could work if they're in balance.

B) Onua is the Toa of Metal, living amongst a village of miners who directly forge the best equipment for their stout champion leading the mining teams to new seems of high quality ore, which he senses through his link with the imprisoned metals. Pohatu would become the Toa of Earth, presiding over a rocky desert where his powers have plenty of materials to shape into training equipment to do exercising on an epic scale. Not my preferred choice due to how metal doesn't seem to have a natural habitat and it seems a little contrived.

C) Some other minor element gets put onto either Pohatu or Onua. I could see Pohatu being either Plasma (heat of the desert), Sound (the quite sands giving peace to the toa in a world of battle and monsters) or Lightning (Lightning blasted desert anyone?). Onua could have either Gravity (bound to the ground and draws all others down with him) or Sound (The layers of Earth muting out sound from about while distant echoes alert the villagers of incoming danger).

So what do you guys think?

I say Onua should get Earth, just because Stone Toa's powers really haven't been defined that well.  Pohatu Mata's power seemed to be kicking rocks really hard.  Onewa's was making structures out of stone, which is pretty close to making a structure out of earth.  I'm not sure what Hewkii did, aside from summoning a rock fist a couple of times.  On the other hand we've seen Onua and Whenua do crazy things with earth and the ground.  In Pokemon terms, Earth Toa seem to get more Rock and Ground type moves, while Stone Toa get more Fighting type moves.

Pohatu then can pick up another cool element to bring into the core six.  Air would seem to fit, seeing as though his Master form was all about sandstorms and dust tornadoes, but Lewa hasn't completely let that go yet.  I think Lightning would be great too.  Take his Phantoka colors, but crank them up a notch - orange or burnt orange, mixed with electric blue.  He'd be fast as lightning, the speed demon we all know and love, and he could take up some awesome electric-based weapons.  The sword off of Sky Guardian or Surge's lightning blades, for example.  I'd miss the boomerangs though.

If we were to make a decision I'd vote for Onua to be Earth and Pohatu to be a misc. element, like sound. That'd be interesting

I really like those suggestions.

I think because Pohatu will always be tied to the desert and Onua will always be tied to the underground, it's easier to make the case for Pohatu being the Toa of Wind than for Onua to be anything else.  Wind fits with the desert theme (sandstorms and all) as well as with G1 Pohatu having the Mask of Speed.  Alternatively, you could make him the Toa of Storm, allowing you to throw lightning into the mix.  Storms don't really fit the desert theme, but it sure is a more interesting power than Stone ever was.

I'd also rather there not be a Toa of Metal.  That just seems ridiculously overpowered in a word where most people's bodies are made of the stuff.

I really like your first suggestion. I would keep Onua's armor black, and have him be the Toa of Earth/Stone. Meanwhile, Pohatu can be the Toa of Wind, and have a tan or yellow color scheme. (This way he can blend into the desert background he is in.)

  • 1 month later...

(I'm still under the two-month limit!)

Basically, had an idea.  What if Pohatu keeps Stone, and that then includes all sort of ground/rock stuff.  Then, Onua gets Psionics (his colors already match, purple and gold).  Onua can summon hammers out of psy-energy, and then Pohatu uses Stone to create bridges and pathways under his feet while he runs.

(also, this makes for two sets of elements: a normal Fire, Ice, Water, Stone, Jungle, Psy, and an alternate set: Lightning, Sound, Magnetism, Plasma, Air, Gravity.  One team has the normal set, another the alt set.)

Thoughts?

I think what people might prefer is something that feels more from nature.  I mean, maybe there is a place for a mystical ethereal element, but it seems a bit strange to put it on the same footing as your bare bones elements like Fire and Water.

And if so, i at least, feel "energy" or "aura" would possibly be a broader and easier to say fit than psionics,

though this gen might fare better w/ psionics cuz my main grudge (duping mask powers) isn't rlly there. i still feel the word and powerset is too clunky when compared to "metal" and "gravity" or just "fire" and "ice" 0:

This is an interesting discussion. Pohatu and Lewa's elements were indeed a bit confusing back in 2001, what with their habitats and earth and stone being so similar. I honestly have no idea when it was that I figured out Lewa was not the Toa of jungle/plant life, Pohatu was not the Toa of sand, and Onua not the Toa of stone.   No sooner than 2006, I think.

I really like the first option you wrote, Jaxus.  The thought of an alternate universe where Pohatu runs about the desert being an orange Toa of Air makes me chuckle  ^_^

While this would never happen, I find the idea kind of intriguing to have Takanuva be part of the main set of Toa and include Onua as a Toa of Darkness-he's not evil like Makuta, Master of "Shadow", but rather represents natural things like the underground, night, and so forth. Pohatu would get Earth/Stone, and then you'd have to decide whether to keep Lewa as Air or make him plantlife. Now that I think about it, Kopaka would be a good one for Air given his wandering disposition...many possibilities.

Voicing your opinions with tact is the best way to keep a discussion from becoming an argument.
