Spaceballs is a Great Idea

In a merchandising move that would make Yogurt proud, a new project has hit the ten thousand vote threshold on LEGO Ideas. Spaceballs - Eagle 5 by NvdK is a model of the popular ship from the Mel Brooks classic, and it captures the look of the film vehicle quite well. The Winnebago with wings brings back memories of the parody that I'm sure hits the nostalgia button that many of the LEGO Ideas sets seem to do so well. There's no minifigures, which is unfortunate, but it still looks like it would be a fun build. We wish it the best of luck in the next review phase. Would you buy the set? As cool and hilarious as this might be, as part of getting George Lucas's permission to parody Star Wars, Mel Brooks had to agree not to produce any actual Spaceballs merchandise (despite using it as a running gag in the film). I don't know what the specific terms of that agreement might've been or whether they might be able to change at any point, but the fact that to this day I've never seen any officially licensed Spaceballs merch suggests to me that it's still off the table.

About the licence. There was a deal between Mel Brooks and George Lucas about the merchandising rights. Only George Lucas doesn't own Star wars anymore, so there might be a way now.

I would imagine that a set like this would sell really well if it was allowed to be produced. I wouldn't mind getting one of these myself if that happened.
