Preview of Upcoming Comic

It has been a long time since I posted here... Anyways.

Hey form visitors! I wanted to give you guys a preview, and hopefully get some feedback, on the yet untitled comic I am working on. Rest assured it's far less horrifying, visually anyways, than the series I posted back on Artwork III. *shudders*

So pretty much what I'm working on right now is a retelling of the early story. Think in the vein of "The Rise and Fall of The Toa," or "Kanohi of Comedy." Though both of those are actually fairly old at this point. Now without further delay let me present some images:

The first image here is the cover of the first issue.

And this second one is the artwork style I'm planning on following, we'll see how that turns out.

I'm going to be a recolored version of the Rayg 2.0 kit (InnerRayg). I've always really enjoyed how the Rayg kit looks and it's pretty much tradition to use it for this style of comic. Below is a comparison between the two different color pallets.

Feel free to post any thoughts or criticisms you may have! I really just want to get some feedback on this before I run too far down this path.

Edit: Replaced the example image to correct for laziness.

Howdy,

This looks interesting. I remember seeing various types of retellings in the past such as the ones who pointed out and I have more or less enjoyed them. I'm excited to see what exactly you'll be able to bring to the table in terms of, presumably, comedy.

I will go ahead and say now that I'm impressed with the cover of the first chapter, it looks very clean and sharp. Very pleasing on the eyes. In a way it reminds me very much of that magazine styling, which is supposed to be visually appealing and eye catching, so nice work on that. I like the use of the Rayg kit 2.0, it's definitely a classic kit with a wide range of assets for you to use which will no doubt be useful for making your comics. I also like the touch-up you did on them, it makes them look in a way, "fresher," like they have been revamped or at the very least, polished up.

There are a few things I would like to clarify or bring up, however. The first concerns the use of pictures for the backgrounds of the comic. I personally have no issue with using pictures for backgrounds, so this isn't so much a complaint from an audience's perspective as it is some worry. I've made comics with photo backgrounds in the past and the hard part is normally finding the right kind of background to suit the idea that I would have in my mind. If I can't find that, then I end up getting demoralized from being able to make the comic to my vision. This makes me concerned as to whether or not you'll be able to find the necessary backgrounds you will need to be able to make the comics. Certain environments found on Mata-Nui are tough to find pictures that even resemble them so I'm curious whether or not you have a back up plan. How much control are you going to have in making the backgrounds?

The other thing that I'd like to bring up is a personal pet peeve of mine in regards to sprites, specifically enlarged sprites. Seeing the pictures, it seems as though you are not paying too close of attention to the proper enlarging of the sprites to maintain equal "pixel" length and width, which makes it look a bit odd in some areas of the sprites. I'd recommend paying attention to the scaling and making sure they're accurate. So if you're trying to resize a sprite by 4x, and the size of the sprite is 16x13 then you would resize it 64x52.

I'm curious as well if you have a schedule of when comics will presumably come out. Is this a daily thing, every other day, weekly, whenever you have the time, etc?

Besides that, I look forward to what you can bring with the series. We haven't had a classic BIONICLE retelling in a while so I'm excited to see what you can do with it. Good luck on your comic making,

Hey!

Firstly, thank for the complements and the criticisms! I really appreciate it.

I was actually a little concerned about using photos as backgrounds myself. I was able to stitch together everything for something like the Ta-wahi beach, but I'm still concerned about what to do with Ta-koro, that's going to be a bit of a challenge. I was actually hopping someone here might have a bit of a suggestion as an alternative to picture backgrounds. So if you have any idea's that might fit with this style better please let me know. :D

Sorry about the sprite blurring, I got lazy and whipped up the comparison in paint really fast. I'll upload a less distorted version as soon as I get a chance.

Almost forgot scheduling! I don't have a plan for regular releases since the pages will take a while. I'm debating to wait and release complete issues, or treat them as chapters and put out pages as I get them done.

Anyways, thanks a bunch!

Howdy,

I was actually a little concerned about using photos as backgrounds myself. I was able to stitch together everything for something like the Ta-wahi beach, but I'm still concerned about what to do with Ta-koro, that's going to be a bit of a challenge. I was actually hopping someone here might have a bit of a suggestion as an alternative to picture backgrounds. So if you have any idea's that might fit with this style better please let me know. :D

Here's my recommendation, and be warned that for some people this instantly turns them off from these large projects.

Make your own backgrounds. When I started making comics on the site I always used photo backgrounds which severely held back the amount of things I could do with my comics. Eventually I learned how to make backgrounds myself. Just practice, practice practice.

I recommend that if you do choose to make backgrounds, and if you have never done it before, find landscape photos where you can clearly see the perspective of the objects. Then, just on another layer, just remake it. Copy it until you get a satisfying background in an art style of your choosing, that way you won't ever be held back by the potential of an off background. It also helps with lighting inconsistencies as you can fix them in your own background you created based off of the picture. And then, after you've made your first one, make another one. And another. Until eventually you end up figuring out how backgrounds should work and further developing your style. Then, focus on backgrounds that are relevant to your story and that give a good idea of what's around the area. By making pre made backgrounds for the comics, if you ever need to have a character visit a location again you'll have it ready. Think of it as being similar to MNOG or MNOG 2, where the backgrounds stay consistent but the character's positions do not.

Almost forgot scheduling! I don't have a plan for regular releases since the pages will take a while. I'm debating to wait and release complete issues, or treat them as chapters and put out pages as I get them done.

If I were to give my opinion, I would arrange it by pages until a chapter is done. Chapters can be used to organize the events in the story. Pages will be able to garner interest more quickly from the audience as there would be faster updates.

Hopefully this helps,
