Coolest Set?

Disciple

Recommended Posts

Evening, BZP'ers.

Simple question (OR IS IT??): Which BIONICLE set is the coolest of them all?

Since I'm posting first, I'm gonna be cheap and go with a very obvious choice: Brutaka. :P

Just look at the guy! Back in 2006, he was nothing like we'd ever seen in a BIONICLE villain. He was totally wicked in appearance, with an evil-looking mask design, giant weapon, tons of gold pieces, and spikes covering his body. Oh, and he was friggin' huge and towered over most sets of that time. Inika aside, he made every other Toa up until then look absolutely puny in comparison.

Feel free to share your picks, and judge by whatever Coolness categories you may (Spikiness, Evilness, etc.).

I'll go with the sets that stood out to me the most throughout my childhood.

Exo-Toa: First set I remember being literally enthralled by. My little child self could not keep my eyes off of it. Too bad it was $30 at the time and was too expensive at the time for my family to buy for me. It actually was one of the first BIONICLE sets I saw now that I think about it. Just the entire design of it, from the picture chosen for the box,  to the design of the set, to the actual purpose and features of it. I thought it was pretty awesome.

Boxer - The other one I remember seeing when I was younger. Once again, another set I could not keep my eyes off of but that was mainly because of the fact that at that point in time I knew what BIONICLE was. I had some of the Mctoran from McDonalds, specifically Onepu and Jaller. I remember seeing Nuparu on there and thinking, "oh my gosh, his mask is orange. I want the orange one." The design of it and the action features of it were pretty neat too.

Bahrag Queens: The coolest set I never saw. At least, not in real life. I always saw this set in the back of the instruction manuals and thinking, "Those are wicked cool but they look really expensive." Sure enough, they were. Either way, the fact that there was two of them, the menacing appearance and the action features made them look really, really cool.

All the Bohrok Kaita: Pretty much all of them were very cool and unique looking. I liked the shapes and sizes of each, they all were very interesting and jarring looking.

Takanuva: I was a simple child, I saw a gold toa and I liked the gold guy. The vehicle was pretty awesome and the landing gear moving was sweet. The whole appearance of Takanuva was pretty cool looking in comparison to the toa who came before so I enjoyed it.

Makuta: I liked the look of the set but I was confused as to why his eyes were red in one of the pictures but when you actually put it together it's blue. Made no sense to me as a child. He definitely looked like a menacing villain and I liked how his torso was constructed.

Axonn: I liked the giant axe and his color scheme was pretty great. I thought his mask was also interesting because it looked like the nuva should armor.

Takanuva (2008): Takanuva already held a special place in my heart so seeing him return was awesome. Seeing him return as this giant, awesome looking set was even better. The overall change in appearance was pretty jarring but otherwise I liked the new color scheme and the mask form. The light lance was also pretty sweet looking in comparison to his usual staff.

Axalara T9: Pretty awesome looking set visually. I liked the bold bright red color in contrast with Lewa's appearance. I also liked Lewa's mask in that appearance, I thought it looked pretty wicked cool.

Skopio XV-1: I actually wish I had this set. The general appearance of it is cool. It reminds me almost of a scorpion but it was a vehicle and so it was 10x cooler. I once again was a fan of the bold red color of the vehicle.

That's about it for the most "cool looking" sets looking back. It's hard for me to explain why I liked each set, just that it looked neat.

The Bohrok in general will always be the sets I consider coolest because of their aesthetic and functions.  They look bug-like, but don't look exactly like bugs, they can roll into a very convincing ball shape, but don't just look like an unfolded ball when standing.  They have a strong, well-integrated action feature that you can really feel the power behind.

Specifically, I'd say Gahlok or Kohrak.  Gahlok had the neat orange-blue contrast, and the fin-like shields looked pretty good.  Kohrak had the piercing, icy looks, and had saw blades for fists.

The Toa Metru, you can put them in their canisters, then stick them in the freezer to make them the coolest Bionicle sets ever.

In all seriousness, I think the coolest set is the Kardas Dragon. As a kid, it looked absolutely amazing to me & I still want it to this day.

I've built Kardas, I've MOC'd Gadunka, I've rebuilt Makuta and I bought Takanuva pre-built. Mata Nui Titan, Takanuva '08, Skopio, I have almost all the large noteworthy sets.

Out of them, my favorites have to be Gadunka, Fenrakk, and the Skopio.

As for smaller sets, I would say Bohrok, but I recently made a Bohrok MOC that I absolutely love which I think captures the aesthetics of the set very well. So my favorite small set would have to be Kopaka 2015. Not because I necessarily like the way they redid him, but as a stand-alone set, it reflects everything good about the 2015 Toa.

As for not Bionicle-themed constraction figures, General Grievous clearly takes the cake.

I mean... Where do I even begin?

There are so many cool bionicle sets that I can't just have one favorite!

But if I had to pick a few:

McToran: Because who doesn't love a free bionicle villager with your cheeseburger? I remember back in that time the matoran from mcdonalds were some of my most favorite sets and I loved their appearances even though they had limited posibility.

Muaka and Kane-Ra: My favorite pair of rahi from the first year, they look completely terrifying yet so cool and the functions were some of the best ever in bionicle, and also not to mention the infected masks that came with it.

Mask packs: That's right, Mask packs. I enjoyed the crazy design of the box and I have fond memories of going to stores and looking at all the little mask boxes and trying to find the mask of time and the infected hau. I remember collecting the crazy differently colored masks of the toa and it was some of the most heart warming moments of bionicle.

Turaga: yes I know, another 2001 set. But the design of the turaga were some of the best designs ever seen, their builds were so simple yet effective, the staves were always so mystical seeing that they were similar to the Toa's tools and also they had six different varieties of mask each turaga so you can customize them however you wish.

Some of my other favorites include the Bohrok, Boxor, Toa Lhikan and the list goes on. Also a few of the new bionicle sets from the new generation are not too bad themselves.

Pohatu Mata from '01 /thread

In all seriousness though, for all my Pohatu fandom, he may not be the "coolest" set. Coolest =/= best, after all.

Of the sets I actually own, I really think that Reidak and the Rahkshi (they're pretty interchangeable, but Lerakh is my favorite) are the coolest from the canister sets. Since the Titans usually reached new levels of awesome, I'll count them separately -  in which case, I must agree with you, OP. Brutaka blows everything else out of the water. And then mutilates it.

Bit of a tangent here, but I really, really liked '06. The Voya Nui matoran are among my favorite small sets, the Piraka my favorite villain sets, the Titans were cool (pro-Umbra advocate here) and yes, I actually liked the playsets. Plus, I don't hate the Inika like almost everyone else. Not my favorite Toa by far, but still pretty cool.

As for sets I didn't own, I only have one for the Titans since my G1 canister set collection is 100% (shameless brag). I always really, really wanted Toa Lhikan and Kikinalo, but never managed to get him. Not only are those fire-greatswords extremely impressive, but his mask was awesome too (they never sold those batteries with the non-canon promotional turaga Lhikan included where we lived) and Kikinalo is probably the best-made animal set in all of Bionicle.

As for G2? Well, Pohatu, Uniter of Stone is the definite winner.

I know this thread is mostly aimed at everyone picking just one set as the "coolest", but I could ponder the great thoughts for all eternity and not be able to answer that.

Bohrok have the nostalgia factor for me, that said Kardas is the coolest because he's a huge dragon, then again Umarak the Destroyer has that new set hype factor I just cant turn down.

Kardas wins though.

Oh yeah, I can't forget about Umarak. I liked his Hunter form so much that I bought it as soon as I could. Probably do the same for Destroyer, too.

Takua and Pewku.  The skittering legs on that set are a marvel of human engineering.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that set. I absolutely loved the build of Pewku.

Incidentally, we have a pet bearded dragon called Puku (Pewku before the Maori lawsuit)

A lot of the titan's had really interesting builds. The early rahi and Pewkuu sets were really creative and I think some of the best.

Aw man, after building the Kardas Dragon, i set him atop my CRT monitor and there he stayed for almost a year.
Then I wanted Brutaka again...

But yeah, Kardas is definitely an impressive build. Skopio is big, yeah, but feels kind of... hollow? once it's built. Hard to describe, but while it definitely looks cool in pictures, in play it's just above average, at least for me.
Voporak would definitely be cooler if it had a unified colour scheme i think..

But yeah, overall, I really liked Kardas, Brutaka, Muaka/Kane-Ra... And the Master Builder set, i liked how you could build a lot of the rahi in the promotional art and in MNOG with it...
As for Gen 2, I've liked the Tahu and Kopaka 2015 sets, though i have yet to mess around with any of the 2016 sets (which should be rectified soon).
Also, i kind of have a soft spot for Nocturn, for some reason...

Maxilos & spinax is favorite of mine, and while they have their faults, the piraka hold a special nostalgic place with me.

A couple other picks would be Skopio, vezon & fenrakk, and Umarak the hunter. pretty much any of the 15 toa are pretty cool too.

Oh and umbra, a bonkle with roller skates and 3 things that light up plus a fancy color scheme? How is that not cool?

Sidorak has always been my favorite. His color scheme is super typical of a bad guy, but it was perfect for his character. He was a bad guy even amongst bad guys. I loved his one blade hand arm. I loved his claw hand that could actually hold the rhotuka down. His feet always really impressed me. Definitely my favorite.

Some others are Brutaka, Takadox, roodaka, keetongu, nocturn, karzahni, maxilos, krekka, nidhiki, and the Toa metru.

Hydraxon.

- Best-looking black and silver set.

- Hands. HANDS!!

- Underslung wrist-mounted Cordak blaster. Looks so dope.

- Three ginormous wrist-mounted throwing "knives".

- He's Hydraxon. Get over it.

Aqua-Batman does indeed kick ludicrous amounts of backside.

Gonna have to go with Takanuva or the Exo Toa. Those are the two sets I wish the most that my mom hadn't gotten rid of.

As for G2, there hasn't been anything of a technic marvel that Takanuva's bike or the Exo toa were (rose colored glasses may apply.) After having built Skull Scorpio I remember the function blew my mind. And I remember thinking the building of Kulta's combiner was nuts as I was doing it. I feel The Destroyer is a little hollow, but I have high hopes for this summers combiner.

I must agree. Although the concept of exploding boomerangs always seemed a bit... odd... to me. :P

If they explode, do they still come back? Or do they come back, and THEN explode? Definitely a dubious naming hehe...

I can't decide which Rahi to go with! I always likes the Manas (picked a set up with box and instructions for CD 25 on the weekend!) but I think the crawling function and unique coloration of Takua and Pewku takes the cake.

As for G2? I really like the function of Skull Basher.

The 2003 Takanuva set is always the coolest Bionicle set for me. Shame that there's no way I can get it in my country through.

Look at my avatar

I'll give you three guesses to what my favorite set was.

Rahkshi

Loved them so much.

My first Bionicle was a Rahkshi.

My self MOC is based off of Rahkshi parts.

(I may change my avatar to my MOC in the future.)

For G1, Kardas.  For G2, probably Mask Maker and Skull Grinder.

It is not for us to decide the fate of angels.

Dominus Temporis, if you're out there, hit me up through one of my contacts.  I've been hoping to get back in touch for a long time now.  (Don't worry, I'm not gonna beg you to bring back MLWTB or something.  :P )

Man, how could I overlook Kardas? And yeah, MMvSG is a great-looking set. I think Umarak the Hunter just barely edges it out for coolest G2 set in my book.

G1: Toa Metru. Granted, they're clone sets, but they appealed to me because they were the first Toa sets to maintain both articulation and functionality, keeping an awesome look to them. Also that weapon storage tho.

G2: 2015 Toa. I like them the same reason as the Toa Metru, but I liked them more for their design.

BEHOLD.....THE DREAM TEAM! COMING SOON.... :o

  • 2 weeks later...

I just picked up a lot at Goodwill with all the canister sets from 2009/2010 (at $20 in mint condition too! Crazy bargain!) so I've finally gotten a chance to see those sets up close after never owning any besides Pohatu '08 and Atakus.

I am really impressed with Krika's anatomy. Plus, those blended red/white parts are super creepy. Despite his overall bareness, I think Krika is one of the coolest Bionicle sets I've ever owned. '07-'09 had a lot of experimentation in builds, which sometimes failed or wasn't all that exciting, but I think Krika's paid off really well, even if he followed the Inika build pretty close.

Some titans might be impressive in size alone, but I think very few sets capture the personality of the character as well as Krika does. His simplicity knocks him down a few pegs IMO--there's very few Technic elements, not even any armor on his limbs--but he still manages to look cool.
