Change of Opinion

G'day, BZPers. Today I pose the following question: What set or group of sets did you experience the biggest change of opinion towards?

For example: I thought the Toa Inika were terrible when I saw the first images back in 2006. In the early leaked photos, they had ugly masks that looked blobby and weird. And when we got the official sets in stores, it turns out they DID have those ugly masks from the early pictures. :P But eventually I warmed up to the sets and they are now my favorite group of G1 Toa. They are easy to pose, have decent color schemes, and carry some really cool weapons.

What sets did you love/hate at first, but eventually change your opinion towards?

I haven't had any major changes in opinion; generally, what I think of them first stays the same throughout. However, if there was to be 1 thing I'd site as my biggest change in opinion, it would be that of the Inika build. Back when the sets were coming out, I had no problems with it, as it was the only experience I had at the time. After it ended, and I started collecting pre-2006 sets, my opinions changed. I still have no major problems with the functionality of the build itself, but I can see that it was overused; or rather, that it didn't have that much variety and changes after it's introduction.

Hrm...

Probably the Mahri, if I'm being honest. All that hype surrounding their identities and they're just the Inika again. I love underwater sets, and I do like their diversity, but they carry the least "oomph" for me, so from liking to disliking in that case.

The Hordika I suppose.

When I first saw them, I simply could not bring myself to like them. They simply did not have masks, they were asymmetrical and their feet were weird.

Additionally, when I first read in the LEGO catalog that their names were the same as the Toa Metru, I simply didn't know what to make of it.

Having watched (and loved) BIONICLE 2:The Legend of Metru-Nui, I simply did not understand how these weird looking monsters could possibly be the Toa Metru (as in how it fits into the lore). I distinctively remember telling a friend of mine that they were (so I thought) not canon, and that I'm sorry I bough Matau Hordika for him on his birthday XD

Eventually, my mom pirated Web of Shadows, and I learned that such a chapter in their story is possible through a pre-sequal of sorts.

And looking back on them now, having recently developed a fixation for asymmetry, they look just fine to me, and I feel they managed to pull off they mutated grotesque abomination theme just right.

Oh, and I suppose its a good thing that they did not have "traditional" masks. Seeing as the team was under a unique set of circumstances, such masks would not be found elsewhere anyway, making mocing with them deterring (at least for me). Much like the Nuva Kanohi, and how the Razor Whale's rider is non-canon because of this.

The Mahri are the main series I remember changing my opinions on. When I first saw pictures they bugged me for what, in hindsight, was a pretty silly reason: two of them used Piraka torsos. Up to that point, in my Bionicle drawings and headcanons, I thought of Bionicle armor as being somewhat like a uniform. And while we'd seen the same style of armor worn by multiple Toa teams, and plenty of other parts shared between heroes and villains, it took me some time to warm up to the notion of Toa using what had previously been a non-Toa style of torso armor, let alone one that was visually different from any of their teammates. But by the end of 2007 I had a much better appreciation for the variety the Toa Mahri brought to the table. They weren't flawless sets, but IMO by breaking free of cloned designs they were taking a step in the right direction.

For me honestly it was the Bohrok Kal. I was fine wth them being clone-sets. But unlike Toa Mata Nuva and 2002 bohrok, I did like that the kal had a better uniform look just silver and a primary instead of using black sockets as a tertiary color. That was what made them unique in my opinion.

Although kohrak kal always surprised me, in his promo artwork his silver pieces looked very dark unlike the other bohrok silver which made him seem like odd one out before i bought him for myself and was surprised with how he turned out to be.

The Toa Mata and Nuva. Since I got into Bionicle in 2005, the first Toa looked pretty stiff and because I didn't follow their story for three years, it didn't interest me as much as the Hordika's struggles. But after reading about them in the space between the Piraka and the Inika, I cape to like them. Many years after I got my hands on Lewa Mata and found it quite fun in spite of the lack of articulations.

Also Gadunka, when I saw the images I thought it was just a head with limbs attached o it, but after buying him he became one of my favorite titans.

Glatorian were iffy to me. I didn't like the hands or that it was a setting away from the Toa, but I look at the sets and story now and really appreciate them. Still meh about the hands though

When the Glatorian were first shown off, I was really iffy about them due to a negative predisposition towards the story moving away from the MU.

What's up with the hands? What are those odd launchers?

What happened to masks?!

But then I read the books and serials and warmed up to the story, took another look at the sets, and began to see the appeal. Vibrant colors! New armor pieces! Intuitive ways of utilizing the Inika build! Cool looking mask/helmet things! Malum!

I went from seething hatred to warm appreciation thanks to the literature. Go figure.

I still don't like the Glatorians one bit.

Maybe reading up on them will bring the same change to me.
