VA Microphones?

Recommended Posts

For those of you who don't know, I'm programming a game.  I don't have much (yet) but when it's done I want to have voice acting for the three main characters.  There's a problem, I know nothing about voice acting except that my current headset mic sucks.  However I know people have VA'ed for various projects here (the Audio Narration Project, Rebirth Chronicles, and Brutaka's Game come to mind) and I desire to pick your brains.

Question one:  I found this microphone at a local pawn shop for $60.  Is this a good microphone?  Is it a good price?  Will it work for VA'ing?

Question two:  If I don't get the above microphone - do you have any recommendations?  My price range is up to the above mentioned $60.  I don't want to buy junk, but neither do I want to fall prey to the 'OH IF YOU DON'T SPEND 300 BUCKS FOR THIS THING EVERYTHING'S GONNA SUCK' mentality that people seem so fond of shoving on me.  (Not you, BZP, you're great.)  If you have a microphone you like, isn't maniacally expensive, and works for VA'ing I am open to suggestions.

Muchas gracias!

I'm not big on VA-ing, but I do know a little. From what I can tell, it should be decent. But it says "portable," and looks to include all the controls on it. As long as it has a USB port or some easy way to interface with a computer, you should be fine. If not, joev14 told me of a few different types of mics you can get for a decent price. If I can find that conversation, I'll pass on the info to you.

As far as low-price mics go, I've used both the Samson Meteor Mic and the Blue Snowball mentioned above. I'd look into both and see if you can find them at low prices (I got my Meteor for $50, Snowball for $70.) Blue does offer a stripped down "lite" version of the Snowball, the Snowball iCE, which can be significantly cheaper. It does not feature pickup pattern settings, however, making it more akin to the Meteor.

The Meteor and Snowball iCE are mics with cardioid pattern pickups, meaning they pick up sound primarily from the front, less from the sides (but still some) and even less from the back.

The regular Snowball, however, has a few patterns you can switch, which result in audio pickup in other directional patterns.

As always, though, it comes down to what you feel comfortable paying for, and what you prefer.

Good luck!
