When the universe fell, we rose…

[Discussion Topic]

The Story:

Welcome to Skyrise. In this world, after defeating Makuta, Mata Nui was unable to restore Spherus Magna to its former glory, and the Mask of Life was lost in the chaos that followed. Without the mask’s energies to stabilise it, the newly-reformed planet became prone to earthquakes and floods, the decades of natural disasters drastically reshaping the landscape and decimating many of the existing population centres.

Over a period of several hundred years, Bara Magna was transformed into a maze of plateaus and canyons, with the seas of sand at the bottom being ruled by rabid bands of Zesk, Vorox, and vicious Rahi. In the process, Marendar was unleashed, wiping out the few Toa who remained before presumably being destroyed. The sentient races that were left made their homes atop the sturdiest of the rock formations, further reinforced by the efforts of friendly Skakdi and other powered beings. On the less secure plateaus, criminals and other outcasts still cling to life in settlements of their own, living in constant fear of the next tremor being the one to spell their doom.

While most of those within the settlements remain content in their uneventful lives, toiling each day to ensure there’s enough food and resources to go around, there are those tasked with travelling between settlements to bear news, ferry resources, and most importantly, keep the peace. It is into these roles that players will be stepping, captaining airships or piloting scout craft across the hostile surface of the new Great Barren.

Locations:

The new Bara Magna is a dangerous, desolate place, with the various permanent settlements serving as the only real safe havens. (Map)

  • Tesara – Sitting astride a singular pillar of earth and stone in the centre of an immense crater, the roots of this jungle village’s immense trees have withstood the test of time, and have held it together for untold decades. The Tesara plateau is overgrown with vegetation, and is even home to a small population of various rahi species, suitable for use as livestock or even pets. Tesara supplies most of the Great Barren’s food, and maintains long-standing trade deals with most of the other settlements (with the exception of Cliffside). Tesara is undoubtedly the most open and accepting of all the settlements, although there are some who would argue that they’re too trusting…
  • New Atero – Originally little more than a shanty town built up at the foot of the remains of the fallen Great Spirit Robot, New Atero has endured the disasters that have lashed the planet, and coalesced into a singular, colossal fortress. Being in fairly close proximity to a freshwater lake and the open ocean, they’re becoming increasingly self-reliant, having abruptly severed many of their trade deals in recent months, and their militant approach to negotiations lead many to distrust and fear them. New Atero’s surrounding are strewn with shattered metal and rocky outcroppings, serving as a barrier against rahi and other dangers, while a number of watchtowers and turret fortifications have recently begun to appear in recent weeks. All signs point to New Atero preparing for war, but a war against who?
  • Fe – An underground village nestled somewhere in among what remains of the Black Spike Mountains, this mining settlement supplies most of the Barren’s raw materials, weaponry, and aircraft. Its people are extremely reclusive by nature, and as such no outsider knows the exact location of the village itself. Those who attempt to find it are intercepted by Fe aircraft and turned around, or escorted to the village blindfolded. They send trade convoys to the other settlements every fortnight or so, bringing new vehicles, weapons, and equipment which they exchange for food, water, and other necessities.
  • Cliffside – A precarious shamble of random structures with no coherent order or organisation, this is where the outcasts and rogues flock together for survival. Scattered across a number of small plateaus spanned by constantly-collapsing bridges, this village has no government or law enforcement, and is dominated instead by mob rule. Its populace is too small in number to pose a true threat to any of the major settlements, while simultaneously being too big to be easily destroyed, and as such this pirate port continues its uncertain existence, its citizens stealing or bartering for what they need.
  • Aqua Magna – Volcanic eruptions and earthquakes have turned the oceans foul and polluted, with only the strongest, most vicious of creatures still able to thrive there. Despite this, the beasts that dwell there make for good eating, for those who have the means and the skill to hunt them. Rumours abound of ancient treasures and old-world artefacts being located somewhere in the depths, although the equipment to pursue such rumours is costly, and difficult to come by.
  • The Arena – No one is entirely sure who built this place, or when, or why, only that it is hewn from some seemingly indestructible stone, the strongest of earthquakes and most powerful of Kanoka alike having no effect on this mysterious structure. Given its proximity to The Chasm, most beings chose to avoid it entirely, but it is still occasionally used for trade meetings or impromptu tournaments.
  • The Chasm – While the planet slowly shook itself apart, the colossal corpse of the Matoran Universe remained where it lay, sprawled across the fragmented canyons. That was, until Marendar did battle with the last remaining Toa atop the long dead machine, and the ground gaped open like a hungry maw, swallowing the entirety of the Great Spirit Robot into the darkened depths. The resulting chasm’s edges still glow with unseen heat, frequently belching fetid smog into the air, and every now and again some kind of horrendously mutated rahi crawls up from below. Those who’ve attempted to explore what lies below have never returned. At least, not with their sanity intact.

Aircraft:

Travel between settlements, aerial combat, and scouting is accomplished using various vehicles, reverse-engineered from technology that was salvaged from Karda Nui before the evacuation of the Matoran Universe. In addition to these uses, it is strongly encouraged by the rulers of the settlements that those who feel the need for violence to take their altercations away from where innocent people can be caught in the crossfire, and fight their battles in the skies instead.

Please note, each character is only allowed to have a single vessel/vehicle.

  • Airships - Utilising a complicated system of levitation and weight increase Kanoka, each of the airships is controlled by pulleys that cause either the levitation or the weight increase Kanoka Disks to strike the Airship's framework, forcing the Airship to rise or fall. A modified version of a transport Chute, capped at both ends, is built into the back of the Airship, providing forward thrust by letting a small portion of pressurised air jet out from the back. These vessels are usually slow and unarmed, but often come equipped with a small number of Cargo Haulers to make the task of transferring goods easier. There are no set limits for what players can and can’t include in an airship, but please exercise common sense. Airships are already slow and heavy, so tacking on a whole heap of armour or weapons, for example, is going to weigh you down even more. Likewise, if you wanted to use your airship to carry a crew of other players and serve as a hangar for their aircraft, there won’t be much room left for any other special additions.
  • Jetpacks - utilised solely by smaller races, these are simple, sturdy devices. With in-built parachutes and enough energy to stay airborne for several days, they can get up a decent amount of speed, and depending on the skill of the user, can be highly manoeuvrable. These are equipped with a built-in parachute, and have no proper weapon or customisation slots. However, they do double as backpacks, being able to store extra fuel, equipment, weapons, etc., so that the wearer is able to keep their hands free.
  • Skyfighters - again only able to be used by the smaller species, these speedy, agile fighters are equipped with a single weapon. It is worth noting, however, that while these glorified gliders are able to stay airborne for much longer than most other craft, they’re far from the most versatile of aircraft, and a few well-placed shots in the right place could easily knock them out of the sky. (Pilot teleportation, 1 weapon slots, no customisation slots).
  • Rockoh - used primarily by many of the larger races, these stocky, heavily armoured craft are equipped with enhanced engines, capable of putting on incredible, albeit brief, bursts of speed in order to ram targets. As well as their characteristic rams, these craft are usually equipped with a single weapon. (Pilot teleportation, 1 weapon slots, 2 customisation slots).
  • Jetrax - the perfect midpoint between speed, agility and firepower, these craft are also used by most of the larger races. Capable of carrying three weapons, the Jetrax model’s most noteworthy vulnerabilities are its two bulky wing-mounted engines. In addition, although most of the vehicle is armoured, the cockpit is not, leaving the pilot somewhat exposed. (Pilot teleportation, 3 weapon slots, 1 customisation slot).
  • Axalara - the biggest and heaviest of the vehicles in the fleet, it’s not as fast or agile as the Jetrax, but is much more heavily armoured. It can carry only two weapons, as its primary purpose is to serve as a bomber, deploying explosives from a hatch underneath to drop onto targets. This aircraft’s main drawback is that its pilot is left even more exposed than that of a Jetrax. (Pilot teleportation, 2 weapon slots, 1 customisation slot, 1 bomb bay).

With the exception of jetpacks and airships, which carry parachutes, all vehicles are equipped with teleportation devices that will automatically transport their pilots safely to the nearest stable surface if their aircraft is destroyed, or they’re severely injured. This system is in place to prevent the rampant murdering of PCs, and hopefully stop people from godmodding in order to save their characters from what would otherwise be inescapable deaths.

All aircraft share a default cruising speed, which allows them to travel from one side of the Great Barren to the other within a little under a day. While airships and jetpacks cannot accelerate much beyond this speed, most other aircraft can make this trip in roughly half the time, making them ideal for use as messengers or scouts. It is worth noting, however, that the unique energies that power these faster aircraft also render the pilots unable to use any powers or powered weapons they might have, forcing them to rely solely on their vehicle’s capabilities.

New or replacement aircraft, as well as upgrades to existing ones, can be obtained from staff NPCs such as settlement leaders, usually in exchange for favours or as a reward for some kind of special quest or mission.

Rules:

  • Please use IC (in character) and OOC (out of character) tags in your posts. OOC-only posts should be limited solely to the discussion topic.
  • This is a pet peeve of mine, but please put both your character’s name and their location in your posts. It’s confusing for other players seeking interaction, otherwise, especially in an open-world game such as this one.
  • No god-modding, metagaming, fightbotting, autohitting, etc. In general, play fair.
  • Please be considerate of other players, and recognise the distinction between OOC and IC. If someone’s character kills/injures/dislikes one of your characters, it doesn’t mean that their player has a personal problem with you.
  • Most importantly, have fun.

GM IC: Welcome To The Great Barren.

The fiery visage of Solis Magna reared up from its hiding place behind the horizon, spilling searing rays of sunlight across the foul, fetid surface of Aqua Magna, and the vast expanse of battered plateaus and fragmented canyons that lay sprawled beyond it.

In Fe, the sight of sunlight clawing its way through the jagged peaks of the Black Spike Mountains served as a signal, for the current patrol groups to return home, and for the morning shift to take to the skies in their place. Deeper within the mountain stronghold, machinery began roaring to life, prepping for the day’s incoming work orders.

On the opposite end of the Great Barren, the people of New Atero also took the sun as a signal for the changing of the guard. Dozens of ground-bound transports and airborne carriers set off from the main fortress, setting out for the multitude of outposts and watchtowers that marked out the borders of the settlement’s turbulent territory. A grizzled Skakdi watched it all from a tower window, an unnerving smile spreading across his freakishly large features.

In the distance, The Chasm belched out a fresh cloud of ash and smoke, as if it wished to prolong the night by drowning out the light for a few hours more. The Arena, however, stood as it always did, unaffected by wind or rain, unshaken by the quaking earth, and unmarred by the smog, its metallic, iridescent sheen forever unfading in the face of the glaring sun. The sun’s gaze did not linger on this strange sight, instead drifting ever westward.

In Tesara, a wounded Vortixx fled from the sunlight, racing out of the village and through the fields, before being swallowed up by the treeline. A few minutes later, a lone Jetrax rose up from a clearing, before diving from the plateau and speeding off on a southbound course.

The sun’s rays swiftly overtook this sight, resting momentarily on the buzzing hive of discontent and violence that was Cliffside, before continuing over the winding mazes of cracked canyons towards the distant, skeletal remnants of what had once been called Bota Magna.

As the new day dawned across the Great Barren, it brought with it the same dangers it always did. Fresh tremors rattled the landscape, hostile predators prowled the plateaus, and the tensions between the settlements continued to build.

There was no such thing as an easy life anymore.

IC: Fifteen - Fe

She had woken up early, mechanically moving through the morning's tasks by only the light of her eyes. When at last the sun rose, the first light that gleamed over the rocky precipice around Fe fell upon a home in perfect order, and a dull grey Matoran looking her best. She was already on her way to the hangar.

For someone that knew Fifteen, the reunion between Matoran and craft might have been touching. To a random passerby, she had merely jumped on her steed, patted its flank, and followed the guiding lights outside.

It was time for work.

IC: Ailun - Outside New Atero

On the other side of civilization, another Matoran was waking up in a less... professional manner. He'd already cracked his mask against three low-hanging pipes in the dark and sworn as a proper sailor. But he couldn't help himself if he was excited.

"Today's the day!" Ailun's voice echoed through the halls with only The Moa to hear it. She was ready for take-off and, hopefully this time, would actually stay afloat. First things first though... she needed a captain.

Of course, there had to be someone out there who was just looking for a good ship, and he had just the ship for them. Not that he couldn't captain her himself, but... he preferred to take a backseat when it came to flying.

Ailun staggered out into the sun, squinting and stretching on the gangplank before making his way back to New Atero. There had to be somebody...

IC: Ezoba - Outskirts of the Cliffside

"Eugh.. Dang, slept in again." said Ezoba as he awoke from the light of Solis Magna, Ezoba sat up and took a quick glance around him, there was little sign of any immediate threat, "but why would there be anyway?" said Ezoba, remembering back to that fateful morning when the earth below them shook. Remembering the evacuation of the block, as he has every morning since the day.

Getting up to inspect the Terani, Ezoba noticed no visible marks of an attemted robbery of any of the machine's parts, but who would even dare do such a thing? The vehicle held no weaponry, and was simply a transport vehicle to help him around places he could not reach on his own. "Frankly it would be a great disrespect to the commoners of this land if one of them stole from their brethren. Not that I personally would consider myself one, but with my reputation, well you'd have to have some nerve to steal from me. Or just be stupid."

Ezoba climbed into the Terani, looking at the scenery around them for a moment more before checking the map to see which way to the Chasm, since he wished to search along it's edge for another day, to try to find a new spot to search. If his search were to turn up nothing, he figured the next best thing would to just return to New Atero. Though, truthfully it was difficult to go back there for his own sake, his PTSD of what had happened was still strongly affecting his person, and being amongst the Cliffside brought him tranquility, given what had happened. But he was getting low on supplies, and he needed to restock.

He procrastinated on the thought of returning to New Atero for a few moments later, but eventually brought himself together and focused on the first thing, first.

IC: Antaine - Tesara

In Tesara, a wounded Vortixx fled from the sunlight, racing out of the village and through the fields, before being swallowed up by the treeline. A few minutes later, a lone Jetrax rose up from a clearing, before diving from the plateau and speeding off on a southbound course.

"What is that thing?"

Too far away to recognize the fading dot in the sky as a Jetrax, Antaine stared in confusion before putting it off of his mind.

"If it's somebody going AWOL, it's not my problem."

Turning on the engine of the Kofo-Piraka, Antaine took to the skies, on his way back to Tesara village. It had been an uneventful day so far. No excitement, no epic struggle, just the daily grind of survival in the Great Barren. Antaine counted himself lucky that he had chosen the fertile Tesara as his place of residence. New Atero or Fe was probably closer to home, but home carried with it bad memories. And Tesara had a lot of food and water - not that he needed that much of it as a mostly-mechanical Matoran - making it a good choice for a comfortable life.

What was he thinking about again before going on this tangent?

Right, he was just going back to the village, continuing the mundane cycle of life. Landing his Skyfighter on an airfield near his home, he disembarked from the aerial vehicle and began making his way back.

OOC: The chat with Greg Farshtey thread is more captivating than it has any right to be... Good thing it exists and BS01 references it; I need to brush myself up on obscure lore tidbits.

IC: Karanta - Fe Border Patrol

The morning air felt the same as always. The morning routine felt the same as always. Wake up, struggle to get out of bed, finally manage it, then run like Karzhani to make it to the hangar early. She always felt annoyed if she didn't get there earlier than most. She usually only arrived seconds before most others did. And today was no different in that regard. Even as she made it inside, she noticed someone already taking off. Someone always got there before her. Always.

Karanta scanned the racks of jetpacks for her Freefalling. It took only seconds to find that distinctive purple paintjob among the other jetpacks. Most guards opted for Skyfighters, but the extra movement and added danger of a simple jetpack thrilled Karanta. And that's all she looked for in life. With a few snaps, buckles, and curses, the Freefalling was all set up and ready to go. She jogged towards the hangar door, and prepared for takeoff. Maybe today she could see who it was that always got out before her. That'd be something different for once.

And different was Karanta's favorite thing. Especially if it didn't take much effort.

Her jetpack flared, and she jumped into the air. As always, she waited just a few moments before thrusting upwards. Those few, few seconds of freefall always excited her. Always. She took off on the usual patrol route, aiming to catch up with that Skyfighter...

IC: Fifteen - Fe Borders

Of course she noticed the flamboyant purple guard tailing her. It was her job to notice things like that. But as she recognized this one with her penchant for danger, Fifteen did her best to ignore her. Anything coming out of Fe didn't concern her. It was things coming in she had to keep her eyes on.

IC: Threiaa - Outside of New Atero

The walls of New Atero were approaching fast, looming in the distance like the black mountains to the north. Wasn't long to go now, just a few more mio, a quick drop-off of for fuel, and boom. Dooooooone for the day.

Sunlight started peeking over the mountains, hitting Threiaa in the face with blinding brilliance.

....Okay then, done for the night. Had it really been a full 24 hours since she had gotten a proper nights sleep?

She pondered this idly as her head drifted up and down, gently knocking into the steering wheel before rising, only to fall again. She pondered this as the sand filtered through her fins, roughly caressing them in their wake. She pondered this as she saw the big silver bubble in sand. Nothing new here....

"Bubble in the sand..."

Lost in the sea between sleep and waking, Threiaa drifted towards the airship in the sands...

...Only to skid across the ground just a few bio from the airship docked outside New Atero, the cargo claw dragging into the ground until Threiaa half-consciously swats at the ignition, killing the engines and plopping down like a sack of rocks.

OOC: I realise the intro post doesn't go into a huge level of detail when it comes to the layout of the different settlements and how they operate, so I threw this together to give you guys some pointers on what's what, and where you'd be likely to find some plot happenin's.

GM IC: The Settlements.

Tesara.

The Tesaran Plateau was unique among the settlements in that it was surrounded on all sides by a vast expanse of open canyon. The hot springs that once made Tesara so desirable lie shattered and broken at the base of the canyons, still providing enough water for sizeable Zesk swarms to thrive, especially given the comparative wealth of potential meals they received in the form of refuse and rubbish that sifted down from the settlement above. The northern end of the outcropping was the site of the village, with the outermost edge being home to docking bays, landing pads and anchorages for airships and other vessels.

The village itself was relatively small, but tall, with most of its inhabitants residing in towering apartment complexes rather than their own houses. A few private dwellings were clustered at the village’s west-most edge, home to the village’s elders and other wealthy citizens. In the centre of the village was a huge, open square, where the fortnightly markets, and other public events, were hosted. Scattered around the perimeter of the square were bars, inns, shops, and the Tesaran Temple, a dome-ceilinged building that served as a memorial to the fallen heroes who’d given their own lives to ensure the continued existence of the village.

Planted in the dirt near the temple was the village noticeboard, where citizens and business owners alike offered work, posted bounties, and advertised their wares. News and rumours had a habit of finding their way onto the board as well, and there were other secrets to be found among the sheaves of tattered papers, for those who knew what to look for…

On the south side of the village were fields of plants and livestock. Casual visitors often remarked how the fields appeared far too small to provide for the entirety of Tesara, let alone produce all of the goods that were traded to the rest of the Great Barren every fortnight, but those who resided in Tesara itself knew better. It wasn’t the fields themselves that did the work, but a hefty number of well-paid Onu, Ga, and Bo elementals who worked those fields every day. Beyond the fields was the forest. Small, but dense, with only a handful of small clearings, it constantly required management to prevent it from encroaching on the fields and village grounds. Vines, roots, and creepers spilled off the southern edge of the plateau, and they too needed to be cut back every few months or so to prevent the beasts below from climbing up them.

Fe.

Fe was an enigma. Even those who resided within it often debated where the village truly ended, or began. In the rocky maze that was the Black Spike Mountain range stood a small peak, negligible in size, and rather unremarkable in appearance, compared to its neighbours. But unlike the other mountains, this one was little more than a shell, artificially built up and maintained by Skakdi workers and other element-wielders. Within this shell was the bestial mass of factories, assembly lines and forges that was Fe’s beating mechanical heart. A complex network of underground pipelines stretched for kio away from the village, funnelling smoke and waste water from the factories far out into the mountain ranges, drawing attention away from the village’s true location.

At the base of the factory crag was the ‘village’ proper – deep shafts bored into the earth by generations of mining and renovating. They grew deeper every day, a slave force of criminals and subjugated beings mining ever deeper into the earth, while the upper levels were used for aircraft parking, residences, and the usual arrangement of shops and facilities one would expect to find in any village. The bars, in particular, were popular, being the best place to for prospective adventurers find news and rumours of upcoming jobs and recent events.

Visitors and guests in Fe were reserved spacious rooms on the very uppermost levels, the people of the underground village recognising that not all embraced their love for the darkened depths of the earth. After all, the mountain ranges were not spared the wrath of the quaking earth, and although most of the underground chambers were carefully inspected and enforced by the best structural engineers anywhere in the Great Barren, accidents still happened, as they did everywhere.

New Atero.

New Atero, by contrast, was a singular, imposing fortress. Strategically positioned with a sheer rock face at its back, and a steep incline at its front, its outermost walls were built up from the shattered remains of the fallen Great Spirit Robot, reinforced with scrap metal, protodermis, and stone. Within the walls, the village was orderly and regimented, separated into four distinct zones, all arrayed around a singular, titanic tower that squatted in the city’s centre.

The residential district was, as one might expect, home to houses and inns, where citizens and visitors alike were expected to reside. Guards regularly patrolled the area, checking the identification and visas of those they encountered to ensure that everyone was where they were supposed to be. The trade district was where market stalls, shops, bars, and so on were situated. Be it goods, services, or just information, if it could be bartered for or bought, the trade district of New Atero was where it would be found.

Next came what was uncreatively referred to as the ‘parking district’, simply being an entire quarter of the city reserved for both public landing pads and privately leased berths. This, too, was regularly patrolled, by careful bribes ensured that certain areas were given more attention than others. In the same vein, for a price, the patrols could be convinced to be… elsewhere at the time certain aircraft abruptly arrived or disappeared.

Lastly, there was the crafts district, devoted to forges and construction. Their output was nothing compared to the masterworks produced by the people of Fe, but as New Atero continued to distance itself from the rest of the Great Barren, it found itself needing to learn, quickly. The tower in the city centre was home to New Atero’s ruler, a grizzled Skakdi who was rarely seen, but whose authoritarian presence was always felt. Similar to the system in Tesara, guards emerged from the tower each morning to place new announcements on a noticeboard outside the tower, alerting the populace to whatever news the rulership deemed necessary for the people to be aware of. Knowledge was power, after all, and controlling what the populace knew was paramount when it came to controlling them.

Cliffside.

The settlement known as Cliffside was an absolute mess. It always had been, and it always would be. There was no government, no control, just an endless string of riots, brawls, and disorganised mob rule. Shanties, huts, and makeshift houses were strung across the closely-clustered handful of outcroppings that made up the village. There were sometimes bridges spanning the gaps between, but more often than not they tumbled into the canyons whenever the ground started shaking.

There were no designated landing areas – if you wanted to land, you’d either have to find room, or make room. Indeed, both survival and citizenship in Cliffside followed that same pattern – you had to make or take whatever you could, and prove to those nearby that you had what it took to defend it. Those that failed became food for the beasts below.

There was, however, one constant in Cliffside. Situated on the largest, sturdiest plateau was Capstone, an expansive, blocky building that served as both a bar and a marketplace, and was where the people of Cliffside voted on important decisions and exchanged news and information. It was an unspoken rule that no blood was to be shed within Capstone, and those who defied that rule would find their stay in Cliffside to be a very short one indeed.

IC: Ezoba - Outskirts of New Atero

Ezoba's search at the Chasm turned up only one artifact, a small chunk of Protodermis. It is barely noticeable as anything more than a piece of scrap though. However, it is still potentially of some value though, at that. "Ehh... Perhaps I could trade it with someone in the Trading District? It should bring a large earning of worth." said Ezoba. Ezoba pondered over it for a minute or two, by the end of it not being entirely sure of what to do with it, still.

Ezoba just stood there at the end of the city for some time, procrastinating about entering any further. "Ugh... Might as well just stay here. I may be able to warrant off these negative emotions by..." Suddenly, Ezoba paused. Feeling a rush of emotions before him, catching him mid-thought. Ezoba slumped down besides the Terani. Still holding the piece of Protodermis in one hand, he looked to the sky, pondering about everything. His self worth, if just all this work is just in vain."Why? Why did it all have to come to this? Our world torn apart from the inside out. My life destroyed, my friends, family, all gone... Why me?!" cried Ezoba.

A solemn tear fell from his eye, covered up by his grated eye mask. Ezoba, out of spite flipped the eye mask up with haste, as his tear ran down his covered cheek his eyes went from depressed, to acceptance. Ezoba stood up, and took a solemn vow of oath to himself. "No, no no no! I need to get past this depression! People are counting on me in this world! We have all lost someone, heck maybe even everyone, such as myself! I swear on my health, that I will make it into that city! And if I cannot find it in myself, by the will of whatever unworldly being, so help me!" cried Ezoba.

Ezoba then properly downed the Terani's brakes, locking it up, and waltzed on into New Atero.

Akita sleepily woke, face down, in her bed, light from the window pouring through. She grumbled for a moment before rolling over.
Right off the bed and onto the floor. Wham

Well, if there was any upside, it was that the fall and resulting impact with the floor woke her with a jolt. Standing up and stretching, Akita made sure she had all her things before leaving, reaching the bottom of the apartment complex. She decided she'd take a minute to get going proper before heading out. Where to, she didn't know, although she did head to the landing...docks, pads, bays, whatever, to make sure her ride was still there.

IC: Ailun - Outside New Atero

He turns on hearing the sound of an approaching engine, watching with one hand over his eyes as the pilot of the Rockoh came in for a landing. It wasn't until a few moments later that they were coming short of the city, barreling straight toward his masterpiece.

His eyes widen in panic and Ailun rushes back to the ship, waving his hands in an attempt to get the pilot's attention. "Hey! Hey! Stop! STOP!!"

Too late. The craft came down with a blast of sand, leaving Ailun coughing, wheezing... and hoping he didn't have a new hole to fix.

As the sand clears, Ailun works his way over to the pilot who seemed slumped over the controls and tries to shake her awake. "Uh... you okay?"

IC: Taurek - Interrupted on the way to Tesara

The craft shot forward as I turned on the boost.

A giant pillar that was before quite small, had grown large in my vision. I was very close to my destination.

I hoped there were some new bounties on the village board, so that I could pay for some more supplies, if not, I would have to travel to another village to see if there was any work there. I was counting on the first option.

The Deliverance continued to shoot forwards, Tesara now within about 5 minute's flight.

Mercenary work was what I was good at, that's why I did it, and that's why I got paid. Truth be told, once I had escaped my captor, mercenary work was one of the only options I had, besides more physical labor, or being a bodyguard. I hated the prospect of either of the other jobs.

Suddenly a vehicle, not much bigger than mine blasted off quickly from a clearing nearby. From the looks of it, they were in a hurry. Perhaps they had a bounty on their heads.

I decided to follow them, turning round and turning on my booster again, flinging me violently forward towards the runner's ship.

IC: Karanta - Fe Border Patrol

Karanta continued forwards, incing closer and closer to the Skyfighter ahead of her. Of course she couldn't go top speed - even if she wanted to have a talk with the other guard, she had to keep an eye out for what might attempt to come into the village. It was her job, no matter how much it bored her. Her eyes scanned the horizon as she flew, making sure that no one was trying anything funny.

Finally, she caught up with the pilot. She slowed down slightly, keeping pace with them. She cast a sideways glance at the plain grey matoran. "Heeeey!" Karanta yelled over the wind. "I saw you headin' out early. You always do that? Or is this morning just something a bit different?"

Her eyes still continued to scan outwards, even as she talked. She didn't want to get fired. Even if the job was boring, it was better than nothing.

IC: Ezoba - Outside New Atero

As Ezoba was approaching the city gates, he heard the sound of a massive crash from just beyong his point of vision. Ezoba's eyes narrowed with a curious caution. "Hmm..." mumbled Ezoba.

Now Ezoba was caught between two options, one, enter the city and maybe find someone to trade with, or two, see what the cause of the noise was.

After a moment of contemplating, he brought it upon himself to go towards the source of the sound.

"Hopefully my curiosity won't come to waste my time."

The gentle nudges of Ailun hardly woke her up, but they called on some part of her brain that was still fighting for awareness.

"Hmmmm? Oh, yeah yeah- just gettin' readay to... loid up, 'n... get ready for take off!" Her hand flourished into the air before falling limp again.

GM IC: Taurek/Deliverance - Departing Tesara.

Luck seemed to be on Taurek's side this day. The fleeing pilot didn't seem to notice his presence, as the receding Jetrax continued on its southward course, travelling a little faster than what would traditionally be considered a casual cruising speed.

What Taurek might notice, however, if he were to strain his ears over the wind rushing by and the roar of his own thrusters, was that the craft he was following was unnaturally quiet, it's engines seeming to be completely inaudible.

Stealth tech wasn't entirely uncommon, but those who employed it usually used their aircraft for less than respectable purposes. Perhaps Taurek had been right to suspect this stranger, after all...

IC: Ezoba - Outside New Atero.

Ezoba glanced over at the voice calling to him, and replied.

"Ah, it seems to be a crash of sorts. (As redundant as that is to say.) But of course! I can give you a helping hand with this predicament"

Ezoba ran over to the scene. "Well, this should just take a bit of muscle." Ezoba lay the incapacitated skakdi under one arm, lay them on their back momentarily, then pushing the controls away from their body by a few inches, and lifted the skakdi up and over his shoulder. Ezoba lay the unconscious being down upon the ground gently, face up about eight feet from the Rockoh.

"So, with them safe aside, it seems that their vehicle had been landed... Or, I suppose crash landed upon this other craft, I suppose it is yours little one. And, your name?"

IC: Taurek - Suspicion somewhat justified

That's a quiet engine. I'd seen the trick done with fellow mercenaries and even escaped convicts, occasionally. Either way, it wasn't "normal" by any means.

He hadn't seemed to have noticed me, so I continued at my current speed, my ship keeping up quite well with his.

IC: Threiaa - Outside New Atero

Only moments after her head touched the ground, Threiaa's eyes were open again.

"HeeEY. WOT 'YDOIN' TO Mei-," Her words came tumbling out, expression tripping over an inflection flitting from one emotion to the other. That is until she turned about to see her ship, laying precariously close to the Moa, her face settling into a dazed standby.

GM IC: Just Another Day.

New Atero.

A nameless, faceless servant emerged momentarily from the tower, as they did every morning, to post the day's new notices and edicts on the fortress' message board, and remove those that were no longer relevant.

On this day, however, the servant tore every scrap of paper down off the board, giving pride of place to three new missives, before scurrying straight back into the tower. Once the servant was gone and the doors locked, a grimly-looking Matoran lurched up from some obscure corner of the square, picked up one of the torn-down pages, pinned it back onto the board, then darted off again.

The three primary notices were printed on pristine parchment, in delicate, stenciled script:

Find Fe: A hefty reward still stands for any being who can find and accurately map the location of the settlement known as Fe. Payment will only be given after our own agents have confirmed the validity of the information given. Anyone who wastes our time with falsified Intel will meet with the appropriate punishment.

Pilots wanted: We are seeking experienced pilots and engineers to aid in the testing of a new experimental vehicle. Inquire within.

A reminder: Military Curfew is still in effect. Anyone found outside of their mandated zones after midnight without the properly approved licenses will be reprimanded accordingly.

The fourth notice, the one posted by the dirty Matoran, was a hastily-scrawled, nearly-illegible mess of haphazard scratches. It wasn't written in the traditional rounded Matoran script regularly used in most of the settlements, either, but in the more archaic hexagonal variation that had fallen out of common use decades ago. For those who had the time and patience to decipher the greasy scrawl, the message read:

Looknig for help in locatin underwaeter trezures. Go to Anvil Bar, aks for Slim e Jo.

Cliffside.

Cliffside had no notice board, but there was still plenty of information to be gleaned from the patrons of Capstone, if one knew where to listen. For example, right out the front there was a pair of injured, dehydrated skakdi who loudly informed everyone who passed them that their airship had been shot down by Vorox a few hours after departing Tesara, and the entire crew slaughtered by the beasts. Normally, such outlandish claims were easily dismissed, but there were others in the bar who claimed to have witnessed the pair arrive in Cliffside... travelling on foot.

A rowdy, hungover lout in the back corner was bragging about pulling off some kind of infiltration job on behalf of New Atero. He refused to go into any details, and it was entirely possible that the entire story was a drunken fabrication. The poor man had been drinking all through the night, after all. The strange thing was, though, that for someone who had been spending frivolously all through the night, he still seemed to have an awful lot of widgets in the many pockets of his expensive-looking coat.

Finally, a dark-armoured Turaga was slouched in a table near the entrance, seemingly waiting for someone. Turaga were something of a rarity in the Great Barren, and given their high social status, it was rarer still to see one here in Cliffside, of all places. Perhaps he had an interesting story to tell... or maybe he just wanted to be left alone...

Tesara.

It was market day in Tesara, and even though it was barely an hour after sunup, preparations were already in full swing. All of the shops and stall owners had already began setting up their displays and unpacking their wares. Only the Fe delegation were absent - they usually set off from Fe a few hours before sunup, arriving in Tesara by mid morning.

Unusually for Tesara, the streets were crawling with guards. It looked like the whole garrison had been turned loose, combing the streets and alleyways, and occasionally stopping to question people. The streets were abuzz with rumours about what might have provoked them, but so far, nothing had been figured out for certain.

Elsewhere.

The Jetrax that Taurek had been following had slowed down a bit, dropping down to standard cruising speed, but otherwise didn't do anything particularly interesting.

IC: Parii - Cliffside

Parii woke up from behind a pile of abandoned vehicle parts, stretching and yawning. Sun was slowly raising, its rays blinding him for a short moment. He quickly pulled himself together and did what everyone in Cliffside did - checked what was left of his belongings. Some fruits, an almost rotten vegetable, medicine, few widgets...

He sighed and his face turned grim. Mata Nui, did he hate this h*llhole. The Matoran stood up, fixed his scarf and put on his backpack, heading towards Capstone. As he entered the street, he started eyeing and staring at those who were passing - from Parii's expierience it creeped them out and made them stay away.

Reaching the plateau, Parii enter Capstone.

The first thing he noticed was a Turaga sitting near the entrance, quite an unusual sight, especially in Cliffside. Parii caught himself staring as he awkwardly passed the Turaga. Then something else gained his attention.

In the corner, completely wasted was sitting a slouched figure in an expensive coat, sipping on his brew. Parii's face lit up for a second - as the stranger moved, there was a clinging sound coming from the coat's pockets. Widgets. Guess the luck's on my side today, Parii thought happily and sat down two sits away from the newcomer, ordering a drink for his last widgets.

IC: Saffina - Cliffside (Capstone Bar and Market)

Had somebody told her that her previous job would've actually panned out just a few days earlier, Saffina probably would have simply assumed that they were mocking her before resolving to punch them in the face.

As things stood right now, however, she was still silently trying to suppress her disbelief. The drink she had ordered mere moments ago was already starting to taste even more watered-down than usual, mostly due to the heat beginning to take its toll on the chips of ice keeping it cool as she continued to gently swirl the liquid around in her glass. The money she had made ferrying those hunters to Aqua Magna and back was by no means plentiful, and she honestly couldn't help but wonder if they actually knew what they were doing for a time, but her earnings did manage to cover the cost of the repair work needed on her ship, plus a little extra on the side for various other expenses. What topped that, however, was the fact that she was able to land relatively close to Capstone itself; seeing as to how most of the space near the building was taken up by merchant ships and suppliers, she had once considered that achievement to be a statistical improbability. A few minutes of throwing her name around, bribing the right people, and making some thinly-veiled threats, and she was fairly confident that no one would be stupid enough to try screwing her over. Locking the landing gear in place and removing some of the smaller core components from within the dashboard's interior was simply an extra safety measure in the event that aspiring thieves somehow found their way inside the cockpit.

Despite leaning back in her chair and having her feet resting on the table, though, her reasons for being here were strictly centered around finding potential business opportunities. The widgets in her possession were never expected to last indefinitely, but in her experience, it was much better to have the next gig already lined up before one made the unfortunate discovery that their pockets were empty, and in this settlement, that frequently ended up happening without even possessing the knowledge that such an event had occured. The highly unprofessional being situated in the back of the actual bar area, shooting his mouth off at a volume that surprisingly wasn't giving him a headache and revealing details about a previous job while flashing his wealth around like he owned the place, would likely soon learn that lesson the hard way, thus eliminating him as both a potential employer and a reliable source of information. The pair of Skakdi just outside the front entrance who were claiming to have been shot down by Vorox were also immediately singled out as a seemingly poor choice as well, seeing as to how they didn't appear to have anything even remotely valuable still on them, Saffina wasn't particularly known for her charitability, and if the problem continued to persist, the people running Tesara would likely start offering up bounties for capturing or killing off members of said offending group anyway. In short, doing something for free when she could just as easily get paid for it simply did not sit right with her.

That, of course, left the Turaga, who was completely out of place amidst his current surroundings, and was the only one of the four who wasn't airing out his dirty laundrey for everyone and their mothers to see. The fact that one with such a high public standing would even be spending time here of all places was rather... peculiar, to say the least, though recognising this settlement in particular for what it was, a haven for criminals such as herself, she figured that subtlety was probably the only reason why nobody was presently trying to kidnap him in order to demand a hefty ransom from someone who actually cared about his well-being. While not initially planning on going down that route (though she'd be lying to herself if she wasn't now considering it to be a potential option), she did feel that his presence warranted at least some further investigation, but was definitely intelligent enough to realise that attempting to barge in on his personal affairs likely wasn't going to do much in the way of satiating her curiosity.

No, for that goal to be accomplished, the Vortixx needed him to feel comfortable enough to be honest with her, and that itself would require a certain amount of... tactfulness on her part.

Flagging down the nearest server, she quickly produced a pouch containing an indiscernible amount of coin before glancing up at them and nodding slightly in her target's direction.

"Bring our friend a drink, would you? Preferably something top-shelf," she said softly. "Put whatever's left towards my tab."

Sensing that the weight was about right, the Skakdi proceeded to take off and do just that, leaving her with a wolfish grin on her face as her plan to break the ice was set into motion.

And so begins our little game... one that I aim to win.

IC: Kathok - Near Tesera

Kathok Hann, self-styled king of the skies, freeblade, sellsword and bombastic soldier of fortune, feels his jagged heartlight skip a beat as the stealth fighter slices the airspace above him into a pair of neat slabs. A wickedly sharp smile splits his face, barbed fingers idly rattling a metallic tattoo in reply. Insolently sluggish, his mind slides words together:

shadow in the wind

fog of silence thick in mind

bites the air in two

No, no. He shakes his head. Haikus were never his strong suit. His hands lazily trace the controls, but it takes the second aircraft, in obvious pursuit, to put them to use. Electric excitement detonates within him, talons dancing over the panel with lightning speed and stiletto precision. Levers are pulled, buttons pressed, and engines shudder into a symphony of abrasive resonance. Sunmaker stabs the sky, the day's newborn solar shine glinting off of Kathok's silver-flecked fangs.

shadow shadows fear

tear them from the burning sky

boom boom boom boom boom

IC: Erland - New Atero

"C'mon, the curfew's still up?! And none of the jobs are really my style..."

Turning away from the bulletin board out of disinterest, Erland began heading back to her workshop. She didn't have any clients, interestingly enough, so she had a whole day of free time on her hands. Unless somebody had totaled their flyer in the short span of time it had taken her to travel from her workplace to the town bulletin.

"Might as well go for a joyride if there's nothing to do..."

Returning home to find no work, Erland revved up the Sky Spikit, packing her "first aid for flyers" kit and taking off into the air. If there were any downed airships, skyfighters, or whatnot near the gates, she could make some coin with a simple patch job. Not that she was that enthusiastic about it, but a little extra money never hurt, right?

Seeing the Moa parked outside of New Atero, Erland landed the ship, curious as to what predicament they might be in.

"Hello, you have been visited by Erland's traveling auto shop..." She began to drone on in an obviously pre-planned sales pitch.

IC: Kathok - Near Tesera

Kathok pulls on the acceleration lever, matching the Rockoh's speed but maintaining distance. With the flick of a switch, he opens radio-av communications lines on an open channel. His voice is beaten into a thin line by the buffeting wind, but an edge of mad exhilaration can still be heard: "What's all this then?" He assumes there's something he can gain from helping this stranger take their target, or from taking it himself. "Is there something interesting on that ship?!" The voice is screamed over the howling gale, its accent mismatched - on average, from nowhere in particular.

IC: Parii - Cliffside

In the corner, completely wasted was sitting a slouched figure in an expensive coat, sipping on his brew. Parii's face lit up for a second - as the stranger moved, there was a clinging sound coming from the coat's pockets. Widgets. Guess the luck's on my side today, Parii thought happily and sat down two sits away from the newcomer, ordering a drink for his last widgets.

GM IC: Parii - Capstone Bar.

Parii's chosen mark was none other than a Steltian Bruiser. The species was well know for their low intellect, and that was when they were still sober. This guy looked like he'd been up drinking all night long.

His coat was unbuttoned, and through it Parii might've been able to glimpse the battered armour plating that clung to the drunkard's figure, and the pair of rusted daggers stuffed into his belt.

Even inebriated and exhausted, a being like this still held the potential to be dangerous...

OOC: I'll try to have a profile for this guy up soon.

IC: Saffina - Cliffside

And so begins our little game... one that I aim to win.

GM IC: Varim - Capstone Bar.

The Ba-Turaga frowned at the sight of the expensive-looking drink that suddenly materialised before him. "Who?" He asked the server, masking the rising inferno of frustration that was building up inside him with a polite smile. The servers at Capstone knew better than to draw the ire of their patrons, and since Saffina hadn't thrown in a bribe for her to keep quiet, she didn't hesitate in pointing her out.

With a momentary, mumbled thanks, Varim turned to fix his baleful stare on the being who had, for whatever reason, chosen to single him out. A Vortixx, but most definitely not the one he was waiting for.

He turned his gaze back towards the doorway, making no further acknowledgement of the newly-arrived beverage. He knew better than to accept drinks from strangers in a place like Cliffside.

OOC: Following Taurek and Silvana ( )

GM IC: Silvana - The Skies.

The Vortixx was currently still unaware of the two competing pilots tailing her, preoccupied as she was with the still-bleeding wound on her upper arm. Trying to tighten a tourniquet around it while simultaneously keeping the Whisper steady was proving a difficult task, given the blood dripping down onto her hands.

Cursing, she started to angle the ship downwards, towards the sandy surface of the canyon floor far below. She was far enough from Tesara now that there would hopefully be no Zesk lurking nearby. Touching down in the canyons was always an awful idea, but out here, most creatures lingered close to the Tesaran plateau. If she was lucky, she could land, tend to her wound, and be airborne again before anything got too close.

IC: Parii - Capstone bar

A waiter soon approached Parii and left him alone with his drink. The Matoran took a closer look at the Steltian Bruiser not too far away. Obviously strong like everyone of his species, he looked somehow tired. Only now Parii noticed his senseless blabbering about an infiltration mission, supposedly done by him on New Atero's behalf. Still looking at the stranger and listening to his drunken speech, Parii was quietly drinking his brew. There weren't enough people to casually take the widgets out, a different distraction was needed.

Parii finished his drink and stood up shakily. He proceeded towards the Bruiser, walking close to his chair. Then, when he was right next to him, the Matoran put his foot behind a chair's leg. He tripped and as he was falling over he grabbed the coat in a desperate attempt of saving himself from the fall.
