Hapori Tohu
You may already be aware of Gary Istok's extensive research into LEGO history. His Unofficial LEGO Sets/Parts Collectors Guide has long been the definitive resource for anyone wanting to know more about the history of our favorite toy company. It started as a CD that could be purchased, then became a DVD download, and soon will be a multi-volume book (details of which have not yet been announced). According to his recent post on LUGNET, the download edition will be closed "shortly", but if you purchase it now (for $29.95), you'll be able to get updates to the guide in the future.
