While sticking to one material in your creations is just fine, it's equally fine to do mixed media (unless you're a LEGO purist), and the latest ReBrick contest asks you to do just that. Go check out Building Beyond Bricks, hosted by the LEGO Classic team, where you have to create an environment for your LEGO creations using everyday household objects. You have until April 20th to build and submit your entries, which you should definitely consider since the prizes include just about every current LEGO Classic set available - that's a lot of bricks!
