Finding/Making Fan-Made Model Instructions

Recommended Posts

A few nights ago, someone mentioned "Krana-Kal", which I immediately misheard as Kraata-Kal. Pretty soon, I was examining the list of Dark Hunters, most of which were, of course, canonized via TLG-sponsored building contests. Frankly, even though Kraata-Kal isn't particuarly great, I'd really love to build some of these.

The fact, however, is that very few of these models have corresponding instructions. Most of them are seriously blurry, or created by folks who are no longer involved in the fandom - or both.

However, I suspect that bringing the entire BZP community together to try to find some of the original creators may be fruitful, within the bounds of our ability to contact people. Perhaps there are even some long-lost instructions out there. Obviously, there are a few that we pretty much have no chance of finding, such as the instructions to Miserix; that said, while combing through the BS01 records, oru chances of finding or making the manuals for some look pretty good. I've thrown together a google spreadsheet outlining some of the basic information that might help with tracking some of these down; all the info is from BS01 or a little research on the BZP names of some creators. Here it is.

As far as I know, none of the models listed on the spreadsheet have public instructions; if they do, please correct me. Good luck!

I've sent every Connor Harvey on the Net a message regarding the DH Ancient, hopefully one of them turns out to be the right one and still has the model available, also why does no chance exist for Miserix's instructions?

I've been doing some more tracking and believe I have located one of the two creators of the DH "Gladiator" I cannot confirm however as His email address information is only available to US residents, if you want to ask about the moc you can do so here: http://www.whitepages.com/name/Zachary-S-Sager/Saint-Paul-MN/i7zxfdu

I seriously appreciate your effort, man. Though the Mr. Harvey in question may not have the model assembled, there's a decent chance that he'll remember some of the torso.

As far as finding or creating a set of instructions for Miserix is concerned, it's definitely possible; there's always a possibility. Unfortunately, the model is incredibly large and only exists to the public as a single image photographed in low quality at a very poor angle. Further, I have never heard from a single person who has a clue who Sarah Newkirk, the model's designer, is or was. I certainly believe that it's possible, but I also know that there have been serious attempts to find her in the past.

That's fantastic. I'll try to contact him about the model, but bear in mind that his brother Nathaniel allegedly co-designed the model with him.

I went ahead and PMed GreenBioGuy, a member here on BZP who allegedly designed Spinner. He hasn't been active in a long time, but I don't know his real name, so there isn't much of an alternative.

This is a subject that's been coming up a lot lately-I remember in particular fans wanting instructions for Miserix and Melding Teridax. It would be pretty sweet to have access to instructions for those models; the biggest issue of course is that with the length of time that's passed since the various contests some of these fans have dropped off the map or don't have the models assembled anymore.

Voicing your opinions with tact is the best way to keep a discussion from becoming an argument.
So far as I'm aware, it's pronounced like this: We're ee ah moo.

Yeah, that's kind of the consistent thing there. I'm 99% sure that I found ToM Dracone's Brickshelf gallery of the original Melding Teridax, but it's going to be way harder to track down people like Sarah Newkirk or Cody Fullmer.

I've had a thought, most of these models would have been sent into scholastic for professional photography, maybe scholastic still has some alternate angle shots not used in the book? Do you think it is worth asking them?

I would ask scholastic. They may have other angles.

I can give Scholastic a shot, but I'm planning on shooting TLG themselves an email first, especially because the former seems a lot less likely to have saved any images.

I've done some research into the DH "Savage" I've found some information regarding the creator C.J. Konopka, it isn't much though, just an inactive Trello account and a mention on Iowa University's twitter

I've also sent a message to the only Austin Stoeffler I could find, hopefully he still has the Hordika Dragon available for analysis.

Here's a Brickshelf gallery of instructions for DH Spinner.

http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=478644&n=0

Also, heres one for Tobduk.

http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=465699

I appreciate you posting those; however, I won't be using them because we already had the instructions to Tobduk, and because the Spinner "instructions" weree not made by the original creator. If you want to check the spreadsheet for the ones that we don't have, then that would be awesome.

I have found Austin Stoeffler, the creator of the DH Hordika Dragons! I'm currently waiting to hear back to see if he still has the model built or remembers the torso design ;)

Wait he's still a active BZP member?!

I contacted him via google+

UPDATE: He still has the model built!

I tried this once, a long time ago. We only found a couple dozen galleries, but this list has a few galleries (like the spiny stone ape) and fan-made models (like the Piraka fusion) that are not in your spreadsheet.

Awesome; thank you. Just to double check, we know that all of these images belong to the original creators, right?

I have no way to know for sure, but they all look pretty convincing.

No, this one was specifically for the Razor Whale, and the description (as far as I can remember) said something about the author creating it. But I guess since the second hand instructions exist, there's no point in looking.

I don't have much on Dark Hunters, but I distinctly remember finding a Brickshelf gallery this winter with instructions for the Razor Whale Rahi MOC that was canonized. Has this already been documented?

As far as the authenticity of the instructions that Planetperson linked to, I've definitely seen those before, and they're second-hand; the description says as much. It's possible that they're entirely accurate, but I feel like it would be great to find an authentic version, assuming one exists.

If not, then I would consider indexing it in the spreadsheet; currently, mine only lists ones that are unequivocally guaranteed to be firsthand.

Yeah, so I found this collection video:

This person seems to have a lot of the fan made sets so you should check out his blog, there might be something interesting.

I believe he has the instructions for Miserix as well but don't quote me on it.
