Heir to Pohatu

Recommended Posts

A skater girl sees something coppery glimmering in a dumpster by the rink.  She digs in a little bit to reveal... something.  It looks like some geometric sort of face.  Did an android, or a mechanized person, come by and get mugged?  Did they strip off its faceplate to hide the serial number and leave the body unidentifiable?  Whatever it is, it's bad luck.  Maybe it's best if it just stays -

A crash in the alley.  Footsteps.  A vague glow coming off of holographic pistol sights.  Looks like they came back to finish the job.  The girl tries backing away but the way is blocked by a wire fence.  She sinks her fingers into the chain links as a raindrop falls, sparking as it hits the top wire.  The pistols raise as their wielders examine their quarry through the sights' glowing L.Amp lenses.

She hardly notices the green letters shining on the inside of the face.

Put on the mask.

She can feel the thing reaching out and latching on to the implants on the side of her head.  Suddenly, she's engulfed in a blinding flash as power rushes through every nerve and circuit in her body.  Metal forms in sheets across her skin, and newfound weight tugs at her sides - but strangely familiar as well.  The thing came alive in her grip, unfolding in her hand, and realization shot through her brain.

She'd seen that shape before.  Long, long ago, back in the school trip to the museum.  The carvings of the ancient heroes of old, stone embossed with copper paint.  The legendary Pohatu and his mighty boomerangs, summoning up sandstorms with a wave of his hand.

And now that same power coursed through her veins, with the ancient Kakama on her face and the boomerang in her hand.  The light faded - and there stood the hero, reborn.

Oh man.  I do admit I hated on Gen2 more than my fair share, but if there's one redeeming quality it had, it was Pohatu.  Jet-powered boomerangs!  How awesome is that?

So a skater girl in a cyberpunk, dystopian city finds the legendary mask of Toa Pohatu.  She puts it on and turns into a reincarnation of the ancient hero.  This reborn Pohatu has heavy rocket boots, guns on the wrists that shoot instant-drying cement, and a pair of extremely versatile jet-powered boomerangs.  Said boomerangs can be used just as boomerangs, they can be strapped to the feet and used as rocket-skates, or linked together into an energy bow.  Oh, and they fold up too when not in use.  The Kakama rests on a band implanted into her shoulder when not worn.

For what it's worth, I think this is my... third? time coming up with a female design as well.  I think it's improving.

Sorry but this model doesn't seem to have quite turned out too well. The body feels a bit too long and thin, and there's too much exposed to work even as a Toa Mata remake. The upper arms are just two ball socket pieces. Finally the boomerang is nigh unrecognisable as a boomerang.

The hair and feet look kinda neat though, I'll give you that. The additional weapon functions are also cool.

Excellent concept, but I think the MOC falls a bit flat. While Pohatu is known for having big feet, this is too far, especially compared to the rest of the body. (Thick legs would work well here, IMO. Or thin legs with small, speedy looking skates.) The proportions are OK but don't work too well together and the design doesn't seem to fit the atmosphere of your setting. I'm sorry for being so harsh, but I tend to be really, really nitpicky when it comes to things inspired by Pohatu.

You have given me an excellent idea for something to make, though. I don't think I'll be able to properly pull it off either, but I'm gonna try just like you did.

I definitely see what you were going for, and I honestly love the backstory and concept you came up with (Humans transforming into Bionicle has been done before, but I like this, especially since it's a woman turning into a reincarnation of a male hero).  But there's a lot of room for improvement.

First, I'll get the best parts out of the way.  I personally actually love the feet.  They have this sort of this 90s/early 2000s anime rollerblade feel to them (where the person wearing them would be small and skinny, but the boots are massive), which I really like, and I assume is what you were trying to go for.

Secondly, I might just be biased since I myself MOCed from '02-'05, but I like how this has a classic G1 feel to it.  But the girl is supposed to have turned into G2 Pohatu, right?  Since you said you hate G2, I'm gonna guess you simply don't own G2 Pohatu, so I commend how you worked with what you had and tried to blend G2's gimmick/character into G1's look.  If you do, I probably would've at least used his mask instead of the G1 Kakama.  If she's supposed to be G1 Pohatu (with G2 weapons for some reason), then ignore this.

But the body needs improvement, especially from a plain frontal view.  I get that you were trying to go for a slim feminine build, but the upper body proportions are off to me.  I think it's the shoulders.  I get what you were trying to go for, but personally I'd make them wider and further apart from each other than they currently are.  If you could just do that, I think that alone could go a long way.

I'm inspired to come up with something similar.  Maybe a guy from this same universe turns into a genderbent Gali?
