Elemental Master Identity Problems

So with the conclusion of the seventh season of Ninjago recently, we're all left wondering what will become of Wu, the Time Twins, and the Vermillion; how the ninja will move forward with Lloyd filling the role of Master; and when the new Samurai X will drop the act and be revealed as P.I.X.A.L. already (the only acceptable alternative, in my opinion, being that it's really Seliel from the Who is the Phantom Ninja? graphic novel finally coming to television). However, the season also raised some questions through its depiction of the Elemental Masters of the past, who appeared both in flashback and due to time travel.

The most pressing question is with regards to the previous Elemental Master of Earth, and where he stands in relation to Cole. Given that he appears to be roughly equivalent in age to Ray, Maya, and Jay's as-yet unnamed mother, it would make the most sense for him to be Cole's father. Problem is, Cole's father has already been identified as Lou, leader of the Royal Blacksmiths quartet, who has demonstrated no hints of history as an Elemental Master. Most likely explanations for this are that either he IS the former Elemental Master of Earth and the writers simply haven't written it into the series yet, or he himself might be related to this former master. Going off the weird timeline/aging process associated with the Elemental Masters of old, it would seem most likely that he could either have been the Master's son and already born at the time of the battle with Acronix and Krux, with Lou having Cole around the time that Kai and Cole were born to his father's comrades, or else possibly the brother of the Master of Earth, both of them being sons of a previous Master of Earth with Lou's bloodline allowing Cole to inherit the powers.

The second question comes with regard to an Elemental Master of Ninja with no relation to the present group of ninja-in fact, the question is who IS he related to. I'm referring to an Elemental Master who has been seen wearing a gray helmet, some armor with his brown clothing, and carries a spear. Now, previously I've seen some consider this guy the Elemental Master of Gravity, due to his ability to float in the air, and thus an ancestor of the turban wearing and highly unoriginally named Gravis. However, during the most recent season, when he first appears in a group lineup with the Elemental Masters, Wu's list of acknowledged Elemental Powers includes not Gravity, but Metal. Considering that Karloff, the current Master of Metal, uses his powers to encase himself in metal all Marvel's Colossus style, it makes me wonder if this gentleman may not have been the previous Master of Metal utilizing his powers in a fashion more like Magneto, manipulating the metal he wears to lift himself off the ground.

Also, it'd be kind of nice to know how the previous Master of Ice-whose clothing gives me a real Inuit vibe-passed his powers down to Zane, given that Zane's...a robot, while the Master appears human.

This is way too complicated and I didn't get like half of it, but I wondered about Zane too. Maybe he's like the golden weapons somehow, like someone embedded the golden weapon of ice metal in him.

That would explain how he could use all the four golden weapons at once to take down the overlord.

But how would his creator get such a metal?

Wasn't he trapped on a island or something.

My feeling about Zane had long been that the Elemental Master of Ice channeled his powers into something inorganic, like Chronosteel (which according to the Ninjago website can contain any elemental power, and was a component of Chen's staff), and that that "something" was used in some way to create Zane's unique power source. That said, there are some flaws with this theory. Zane's entire physical body, including his power source, was destroyed at the end of Season 3, but his newly constructed body retained his Ice powers. This, along with Morro keeping his Wind powers as a ghost, even when he possessed Lloyd's body, suggests that elemental powers are tied strictly to one's soul or spirit rather than any aspect of their physical or biological makeup.

This is part of why I tend to think of elemental powers as hereditary rather than genetic, and certainly raises the question of whether those powers can be passed on to others besides one's biological heirs.

We also did get confirmation in the last season that siblings (twins, specifically) can share elemental powers, though they cannot necessarily use those powers in quite the same ways. So that's also a possibility for Cole's parentage.

I'd be amiss to mention another possibility, which is that one of Cole's parents may be transgender. I'm not sure if the showrunners would be brave enough to take things in such a progressive direction, though, since cartoons in general and merchandise-driven ones in particular can be iffy about things that might upset conservative parents.

He was trapped on the island after he made Zane. I.e. he made Zane first, then got trapped on the island.

idk on what Aanchir said. Maybe the elemental mastery thing is like an information thing that's part of some people's brains in Ninjago. The inventor guy was able to translate the knowledge of that into computer code, perhaps?

and don't even get me started on why, if the elemental mastery thing is innate, why the ninja lost their elemental power when their golden weapons were lost in season 2 and then the weird connection to lloyd having golden power and giving it away...maybe it's something having to do with that particular group of ninjas?

There is one thing that might stabilize that theory: the fact that Zane gave P.I.X.A.L. half of his original power source prior to the loss of his original body. I find it entirely plausible that she could have removed it and possible restored it by some method using Borg's technology and installed it in Zane's new body, thus granting him full access to his powers again. Of course, the idea of the powers being tied to their spirits would also make a lot of sense given the case of Morro.

Yeah, the thing with the four original ninja is a bit of a headache-of course, it wouldn't be such an issue if they hadn't brought up that whole mess with the Tournament of Elements (my least favorite season to date). It's just kind of annoying that their powers were tied to four Golden Weapons initially, and then relied upon the Elemental Blades until Lloyd transferred his powers to them. I'd like to imagine-though at this point I doubt the show will ever address it-that each of them could access their Elemental powers on their own with a little training rather like Nya did, but since we've got the whole Lloyd-link think going I don't think it's going to happen.

Maybe the elemental power just chooses a new host when the current one dies our is unworthy like it's sentient.

An interesting thought, though it's still somewhat curious as to why a power that previously inhabited a living host would enter a robot. The whole death thing would also make you wonder how Morro was able to retain his powers, unless somehow being a cursed ghost was different from typical death. Mind you, it would be interesting if in season 8 or beyond-if the show keeps going-if some character showed up as the new Master of Wind or if an established character suddenly gained the powers. The worthiness thing also seems a tad questionable, and would seem to give these sentient Elemental powers an amoral bent given that Morro retained his powers despite siding with the Preeminent and that the Time Twins had to have their powers forcibly extracted.
