Wall of History

History.  Myth.  And the Truth that binds them together.

These are the virtues upon which Stoeia-Nui was founded, created by the gods to be a font of knowledge for all who live in the mortal world.  For a time, its inhabitants fulfilled this duty well, dedicating themselves to expanding their own minds as well as the minds of all who came to their shores.

But this prosperity was not to last.

Makuta, a demon born of deceit and falsehood, descended upon the island one day, wishing to rob mortals of their knowledge and leave them powerless against him.  His army of horrors seemed endless, but eventually, a team of brave Toa were able to slay Makuta.  The shadow of lies receded, the demon’s threat vanquished.

And yet, he was in part victorious.

The inhabitants of Stoeia-Nui gave their all to defend their home.  Unfortunately, when the battle was over, they could not get it back.  They taught themselves to fight, devoted themselves wholly to repelling Makuta, embraced the ways of war…and forgot the ways of knowledge.  Stoeia-Nui became simply another island.

Ten thousand years have passed.  Makuta has now returned.

The island’s denizens have done their best to repel the demon’s forces, but they are failing.  The only hope of victory lies in an account of his previous assault, carved into the Wall of History by the last Chronicler, but it is written in a script that is illegible to the present generation.  The village leaders have each selected a champion: new Chroniclers, the first in ten thousand years, and given them one desperate mission.  They are to seek out the Spirit of Knowledge, the patron of Stoeia-Nui, and beg her help in translating the history and repelling Makuta.

It is upon them that all hope now rests.

Obviously, you are those Chroniclers.

Good news: you’ve found the Spirit of Knowledge!

Bad news: she’s pretty annoyed it took you this long to seek her out.

But hey, don’t lose hope.  She’ll give you a chance to return to the ways of knowledge, but you are going to have to earn it.  To prove your worth as Chroniclers, you’ll need to show what you know about stories.

This game will have seven rounds.  Each round, a prompt will be presented, and you will then have five days to write a very short story based on that prompt.  After the deadline has passed (or if everyone posts before then), I will judge a winner.  The winner temporarily gains “the power of Legend”, which enables them to translate one piece of the Wall of History, the idea being that they will then share it with the other Chroniclers, who all then share it with their villages.  By analyzing the Makuta’s past attacks, the villages will learn how to deal with his current attacks.  You still have a fighting chance.

However, there is no guarantee that a Chronicler’s heart is pure.  When a winner is declared, I will PM them the section of History that they have translated, and they must then decide what to do with it.  They can turn it over to the Library (linked below) for all to see, they can PM it to only a few other players, or they can just keep it for themselves.  And with the first two options, there’s nothing preventing you from…”editing” the History a bit, should the urge hit you.  At the end of the game the status of all villages will be presented, depending on how well they withstood Makuta’s attack—do you want everyone to thrive, or do you want your village to outshine the others?  That’s entirely up to you.  Well, that and whether or not they believe what you tell them.

In other words, here’s a simplified rundown of game progression:

1. Prompt and deadline given

2. Players write stories, time limit of 5 days

3. Stories are judged (I will be as speedy as possible)

4. History fragment PMed to winner

5. Winner decides how or if to share fragment, time limit of 24 hours

6. Players are asked to advise their village on a situation via PM, time limit of 24 hours

7. Suggestions implemented, move on to next round

If you miss deadlines:

-Don’t post a story, no chance at getting a History fragment that round

-Don’t say what you want to do with a piece of History, it gets published in the Library

-Don’t advise your village, bad things will happen (affecting its status going forward)

That should cover it!  Signups will stay open for 72 hours!

EDIT: Well, it's been 72 hours and no one's signed up.  Oh well.  Back to the drawing board, I guess!
