Women of NASA Officially Revealed

Recommended Posts

Over at LEGO Ideas, Hasan and the rest of the team have officially revealed 21312 Women of NASA in a new blog post. The set, whose original idea was created by Maia Weinstock will officially be released on November 1st for $24.99. If you live near New York City though, you can pick it up a few days earlier on October 28th at the Flatiron LEGO Store, where Maia will be signing sets and meeting with fans. The set itself looks fantastic, and I'm sure LEGO fans, space fans, and many other will be lining up to get their copy of it next month!

This set turned out great! I love the little space shuttle and Hubble telescope!

Out of curiosity, is Sally Ride the first lesbian minifigure? I can't recall if any other confirmed lesbian characters (licensed or non-licensed, real or fictional) have been produced before. If so, I'd consider that a big step, albeit a long overdue one...

There was Holtzmann from Ghostbusters, maybe.

Hm, one of the few instances where the finalized models are actually better than the submitted idea, IMO. I was unsure about getting this one, but it looks like a worthwhile purchase. Now we'll have to see if they're have as bad of stocking issues as they did with the last female scientist set.

Personally, I feel like most Ideas sets improve on the original project. Minecraft took a really rudimentary concept and turned it into a decent display piece. Yellow Submarine smoothed out the curves, improved the accuracy of many parts like the railings, and added more detailed colors. The Ghostbusters Ecto-1 strengthened the build and added details like interior seating and white-wall tires. Even the much-maligned Back to the Future DeLorean set improved the proportions of the hood and cabin to make them less boxy (the Eurobricks review does some direct side-by-side comparisons that really highlight all the improvements).

I would be wary about this set's availability, just because so many of the science-related sets (Research Institute, Curiosity Rover, Saturn V, etc) have had some kind of availability issues, and this one coming out in early November so close to the Christmas shopping rush (as well as having a pretty low price point) might exacerbate that.

On another note, the project creator of Women of NASA left a nice little message on Twitter: https://twitter.com/20tauri/status/920615589554647040

Did LEGO just use a illegal connection?

Nope. That type of connection was only really "illegal" for the old 1x1 plates with clips on top, due to stressing that particular piece. The newer version of that part, and other clips like this piece or minifigure hands, can grip tiles just fine (plates are a different story and may well be an illegal connection due to having different geometry and being slightly thicker).
