Hapori Tohu
LEGO has shared their 2017 annual results, and they don't seem very excited about it. Sales were flat year over year, but revenue and profits were down in part due to a 'clean-up of inventories across the chain.' Now before you worry that this means that LEGO is going out of business, keep in mind that their net profit in 2017 was still approximately $1.3 BILLION USD (7.8 bn DKK), which is after their expenses, taxes, and everything else. So while that's less than the $1.56 bn USD (9.4 bn DKK) that they netted last year, LEGO is still very much in the black. Additionally, they saw sales grow in the last quarter of 2017, which could indicate that they're off to a good start in 2018. What interested me the most is that The LEGO Batman Movie wasn't mentioned at all and The LEGO Ninjago Movie was only mentioned briefly. Let us know your thoughts on these results in the Talkback! Lyichir
As an AFOL, I'm fairly sure this downturn is a direct result of all the things Lego does that I personally dislike. [/sarcasm] Nah, the explanations listed in the report seem to make sense to me. 2017 was a rocky year for Lego, and they took a chance on some endeavors that didn't quite give them the results they were hoping for. But they can't all be winners. Over the past decade Lego has proven adept at keeping tabs on the performance of their various product lines and adjusting plans accordingly, so I'm sure they'll be fine. ToaTImeLord
Only $1.3 billion? Lego step it up.Seriously this explains a lot about last year's experimental nature. VahiHolder02
I can't help but think that some of this is related to the decrease in Star Wars toys in general. True, physical toys' demand may be dropping across the board, but for what was once Lego's number 2 most popular theme at a time, there has to be some correlation. BIONICLE saved Lego in the early 2000s partly because it was home-grown. Hopefully Lego can introduce something akin to BIONICLE or Ninjago in the near future.
