Some help with teeth for System creatures

Recommended Posts

So over the past few days, I've been working on a MOC in Stud.io based on the Nayzaga from Dauntless.

maxresdefault.jpg

The body has been going just fine, with his rotundity and spikes being pretty easy to figure out. However, I can't seem to get a grip on his head.

His mouth is full of small, needle-like teeth, and I can't seem to replicate the look quite right. Is there a way to better design his mouth?

Maybe use the small tooth/spike element (like the Barraki "teeth") attached to a 1x1 plate with horizontal clip? That too would stick out to the side a tad but would convey the small, thin spiky teeth better than those piece methinks.

I assume that head build is scaled to the rest of the MOC, so making it bigger would ruin the whole thing? Because with a larger build you could hide them better and add more to better represent the source material. Right now the Barraki teeth are the only thing I can think of that could work.

I did end up caving in and using those, as well as switching the overbite to an underbite like it has in-game; but now it just looks stupid because the teeth look detached from the lower jaw.

Hum I have an idea I just hope I can convey it right.

Your going to need

Two Modified 1 x 1 with Studs on 4 Sides

Two or four Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with 3 Teeth (Claws)

One Technic, Brick 1 x 1 with Hole

A robot claw hand for the joint

A cheese slope for the chin

Okay now the explanation.

Take one modified stud brink and connect the robot claw to a side stud. Then on the opposite side connect the technic pinhole brick and have the side stud go into the pinhole. Take the second modified stud brick and do the same.

At this point It should look like a weird rectangular shape with studs on its sides. Put the teeth plates on the sides put cheese slope on the side opposite the robot hand for the chin put plates of your choosing to cover up the white studs of the teeth.

I have no idea what you're telling me to do with the claw hands, but you did inspire me to figure out this:

Nayheadv3

Honestly, I like it because Nayzaga's skull is narrower than his jaw. I don't think this is final but I do believe I'm on to something here.

How's this? Gets a lot of teeth packed in there really close together with the jaw mostly surrounding them. There are lots of ways you could modify this to make it sturdier and cover up the place they show through the front of the jaw as well, if you find that bothersome.

teeth_help.png

Parts:

  • 6636 x2 (but this can be replaced with a shorter or longer tile if you need)
  • 15208 x4
  • 22385 x4
  • 99780 x1

Here's another option that's a bit bigger and uses the pointier teeth, a little more spread apart. But still no wider than your current lower jaw, and it could be made shorter or longer in length fairly easily:

teeth_help_2.png

Parts:

  • 3021 x2
  • 3623 x1
  • 11477 x1
  • 15573 x1
  • 50746 x8 (only four shown in the picture above so you can see the interior structure)
  • 53451 x10
  • 61252 x1
  • 63864 x1
  • 85861 x10

That first one is very similar to the idea I tried describing.

The second one looks a lot better than the weird, rectangular thing I had before. However, I'm still not sure how I feel about his top jaw.

Nayheadv4

It's now the same width as his lower jaw, which makes the underbite less conspicuous. It's a little hard to tell from the pic I used in the OP, but his top jaw is supposed to be narrower than his lower jaw.

(Man, I wish I could shrink images.)

EDIT: Actually, that first one could be awesome for Stormclaw when I get around to doing him.

This is just a stylistic suggestion, based on seeing pictures of the creature for the first time (I don't know the game), but what I first noticed was how curvy and uneven the teeth look in the game. Have you considered having some of the teeth facing away instead of inward to preserve that look?

I've toyed with that idea, but I want to settle on a final head design before I commit to adding more little details like that. Still, it's probably a good choice, and I think I'll do it eventually.
