Automated LEGO sorting has been a dream and a running joke for years. Progress is being made on that front, though, and a recent project on Medium is worth a look. Using TensorFlow and a Raspberry Pi as the basis of a (3D-printed, non-LEGO) build, Paco Garcia was able to correctly sort 11 brick types by shape 89 times out of 100. Over the four-part series of posts, enough details are given to provide a new starting point for approaching the problem.
