Chapter 3Von Nebula crossed the room and examined a cylindrical chamber in the wall, and just as he was about to touch it a voice said, “Rahkshi. They won’t do anything without Kraata to pilot them.”Von turned to see Makuta behind him, and he said, “Ah, you’re back. The Toa came while you were gone, but I sent them to another planet. XPlode and Rotor are there to keep an eye on them.”Makuta nodded and said, “I suppose the Alpha Team has arrived by now?”“Corroder and Thunder are taking care of them,” Von said. “So…did you find it?”“Yes, I did,” Makuta said, drawing out a glowing brick-like object. “I had to do a bit of searching, but it exists. Perhaps the rest of your legend is true as well.”Von took the brick and stared at it greedily, saying, “Excellent…this will make obtaining the other three much easier.”Tahu woke up and groaned, his whole body still sore from the crash landing. He could see the others nearby and slowly got up, but then he sensed someone behind him and turned to look. The being watching him had white and blue armor and was about as tall as a Turaga, and he had skis on his feet, a black visor over his eyes, and a black pole in his right hand.“…Hey,” the stranger said. “You and your friends kinda fell from the sky…what’s that all about?”Tahu stood up and looked around, seeing nothing but a very large rock in the wasteland they stood in, and he said, “We were…thrown into a black hole.”“Yikes,” the stranger said. “Sounds like you’re having a rough day. I’m Ski, the Ice Slizer. I was on patrol here when you landed.”“I’m Tahu, Toa of Fire,” Tahu introduced. “Where are we?”“You’re in the Blast Sector,” Ski said. “Landed pretty close to the meteor, too…ironic.”“…I’m sorry, I don’t understand,” Tahu said.“Oh, right,” Ski said. “I should probably take you and your friends to see the Judge Slizer so we can get this all sorted out. But…my ship is just a one-man craft…”“We can keep up on foot,” Tahu said.Ski stared at him silently for a while, and then he said, “…Right…well, you wake your friends up and I’ll go get my ship.”Ski left and Tahu woke the other Toa, and Pohatu said, “Man, that hurt…are we still on Mata Nui?”“I don’t think so,” Tahu said. “One of the locals came by and said he was going to take us to see the ‘Judge Slizer’…let’s play along for now.”A white and blue aircraft flew overhead, and the Toa used their Speed powers to follow it. “What happened to this place?” Onua wondered aloud. “There’s nothing but destruction here…”As they neared the edge of the wasteland they came upon a large transparent dome, and the aircraft landed just outside and Ski stepped out. “Huh…you really can keep up…” Ski murmured. “Anyway, come on—the Judgment Tower isn’t far.”He led them into the dome, stepping right through the ‘wall’, and Gali asked, “Um…have we done something wrong?”“Oh, no, the Judge Slizer is just in charge of, well…everything,” Ski said. “Figured you might be able to gather your bearings.”There was a very advanced city filled with machinery inside the dome, and after walking down a few streets they came upon a tower that seemed to reach all the way to the very top of the dome. Inside they encountered a winged being with yellow and black armor, who greeted, “Hello, Ski. Who are your friends?”“That’s actually what we’re trying to figure out, Jet,” Ski said. “They were thrown through a black hole, apparently, and they landed near the meteor.”“You don’t say?” Jet replied.“Are you this Judge Slizer we’re supposed to see-visit?” Lewa asked.Jet chuckled, “No, I haven’t been Judge Slizer for a thousand years. Rida is the Judge Slizer now—you’ll find her on the top floor.”Ski led the Toa over to an elevator which they rode to the top floor, and when they stepped off they crossed a hall and walked into a room where they saw another being in black and yellow armor sitting behind a desk. “Ski? Aren’t you supposed to be patrolling the Blast Sector?” she asked.“Come on Rida, you don’t think I’d just ignore my duties, do you?” Ski said. “Found these guys near the meteor, thought you might want to talk to them. I’ll get back to my patrol now.”Ski left and Rida stood up, and she said, “Okay…well, I’m Rida, the Judge Slizer. Please, take a seat.”The Toa sat down and Tahu said, “We’re not, ah…from this planet, so we’re a bit confused about how things work here.”“Duly noted,” Rida said, sitting back down. “Well, first things first: how’d you end up in the Blast Sector?”“We were sucked into a black hold and deposited here,” Kopaka said.“…I see,” Rida said. “That’s a new one…uh, what next…”“What’s a Slizer?” Pohatu asked.“Oh, okay,” Rida said. “Well, every year in each Sector of the planet we hold tournaments with all of our warriors, and the winner of each tournament gets the title ‘Slizer’ for that year. Except, here in the Slizer Dome we only have a handful of warriors, so when a Judge Slizer gets chosen they keep the title until they retire. And the Blast Sector doesn’t have warriors, of course…”“How many of these Sectors are there?” Onua asked.“We used to have seven, plus the Slizer Dome,” Rida said. “But a thousand years ago that meteor hit and destroyed three whole Sectors…we call the wreckage the Blast Sector now.”“How does a meteor land-crash with that much power?” Lewa asked.“…You know, I should probably take you to the history chamber,” Rida said, standing up and leading them down the hall to another room.Rida flipped a light switch and the room lit up, revealing several artifacts and images along the walls. Rida gestured to a carving that displayed a brick-like object and said, “Guess we’ll start at the beginning. Legends say that long, long ago, a deity created our race using the power of a mystical brick. A civil war erupted, two armies battling to gain control of the brick, but then the deity banished the factions to two separate worlds and hid the brick where no one could find it. We always had records of our planet, but it wasn’t until after the meteor impact that we found out some of what happened on the other planet.”She took a few more steps, nearing an image of a planet divided into seven parts with eight disks surrounding it. “Our whole species, on both planets, began to specialize in disk-throwing, and the disk became our ultimate weapon. We established the Slizer system, and the other planet established a monarchy, and despite a few upsets here and there things were peaceful-ish for generations. 11,000 years ago on the other planet, a warrior named Blaster led a bloody coup against the monarchy, but it failed and he and his minions were banished to a piece of space rock that fell into deep space. But one of them, a warrior named Millennia, discovered a powerful source of energy deep within the meteor that empowered all of them and gave them the ability to guide the meteor as if it were a spacecraft. Blaster and Millennia led a campaign across the universe, conquering every planet they came upon…let’s see the next important thing is…”Rida walked to another carving that displayed a meteor colliding with a planet, and Rida said, “1,001 years ago we began encountering beings in gray and black armor with strange powers—scouts sent by Blaster to determine if our planet was worth conquering. Needless to say, the similarities interested him and the scouts began filling the planet with energy that gradually drew the meteor here. Millennia, however, began to feel guilty for his past deeds and tried to convince Blaster not to attack, but that didn’t go so well and Millennia made his way here on his own. He arrived near the end of the year, intending to destroy the energy drawing the meteor here—the Millennium Bug—but the chemicals in the Urban Sector turned the bug into a fungus that came up through the whole Sector, and it wasn’t exactly easy for him to convince the Slizers he wasn’t a threat. Unfortunately, he couldn’t stop it in time, and the mutation of the Millennium Bug was drawing the meteor here so fast that even its pilots couldn’t stop it. On New Year’s Eve it entered the atmosphere, and Jet flew off to try and stop it…he changed its course enough that it didn’t destroy the whole planet, but the Jungle, Mountain, and Storm Sectors were obliterated and Jet, who we all thought died, was captured and hidden inside the meteor.”Rida turned to the next wall, one that depicted several battles, and quietly said, “For the next year, we fought the Millennium War. As soon as they landed, Blaster’s army attacked the whole planet, and his generals Spark and Flare descended on the Volcanic Sector and killed Torch, the Fire Slizer. The remaining warriors, myself included, united under Millennia’s leadership, and in the end we killed Flare, Spark, and Blaster, rescued Jet, and things somewhat returned to normal.”“…Unbelievable…” Gali said.“Whether you believe it or not is your choice, but it is the truth,” Rida said. “So, that’s the story of our species. What about yours?”Meanwhile, inside the meteor, XPlode and Rotor were sifting through piles of rubble to try and salvage anything valuable. “Are you sure we should be doing this?” Rotor asked. “Von Nebula told us to watch the Toa.”“We also need to find the brick,” XPlode said, “and an abandoned place like this is the easiest place to start looking. Now help me move this door.”Rotor walked over to a giant iron door and ripped it off its hinges, and XPlode stepped into the room beyond and looked around. Aside from a few broken terminals and an unoccupied stasis tube, the room was empty, so he cursed and shot his Meteor Blaster at the wall. He turned to leave, but then Rotor went to where the blast had hit and said, “Hey boss, look at this!”XPlode glanced over his shoulder to see Rotor pulling a large metal box out of the wall, and he said, “I guess this trip wasn’t completely worthless…”Review
