Jaller’s name

Recommended Posts

It’s common knowledge that Jala’s name was changed to “Jaller” for the first Naming Day after the Bohrok-Kal were defeated, and that it’s still pronounced the same way. But I seem to remember that the reason that the silent “R” was added to his name was that Takua messed up while inscribing it on the Wall of History. This would mean that the intended name change was something more phonetically sound, such as “Jalla.”

Now, this isn’t explicitly stated in the site’s Wall of History section. In the article, the name is already spelled “Jaller” in Vakama’s dialogue, and Vakama merely instructs Takua to “try to spell them [the newly spelled names] correctly.” However, I may have read it in a different section of the site, such as the story overview or character bios. Furthermore, from an in-universe perspective, this article is presumably the very thing that Takua himself carved on the Wall of History anyway, so even his inscription of Vakama’s speech would include the misspelling, giving credibility to my memory.

But maybe I just saw the funky new way the name was spelled, read Vakama’s command regarding spelling, and made everything up. What do you think?

I've always found that line from Vakama amusing - Takua is expected to spell the names correctly with no information other than that they sound the same as the old ones  :P

Anyways, I'm honestly more inclined to think the latter is the case, though I didn't have internet in 2002/3 so I don't actually have any memories of the site.

If that was on the website somewhere, though, maybe it was something added by the people running the US version of the website (assuming there were separate US and EU versions of the site - I don't actually know)? In British-English, Jaller and Jala would clearly be pronounced pretty much identically, but American English speakers are more likely to pronounce them differently. If there were different versions of the website in different countries, maybe someone working on the US site added some flavor text somewhere to help kids understand why there was a silent "r."

I’m pretty sure there was just an “English” site, as opposed to separate versions for regional dialects, but I’m not entirely sure of that. I do remember an option to change languages somewhere in a corner of the page, but all I reember it having are English, Francais and Deutsch.

Oh and regarding the British thing, doesn’t Vakama have a British accent in the movies? Maybe the non-British Takua misheard him, heh.
