Unreliable Narrator

IC: Zaliyah - Metru-Koro

Seething inward and out, with the Turaga before practically begging to be butchered, and one of the other Toa having somehow teleported around behind her, all Zaliyah could do was glare at Stannis as he spoke up.

But gradually, her anger abated. Stannis had been cordial and curious from the moment Zaliyah had set foot in the village. He hadn't insulted, belittled, threatened or dismissed her like the Turaga had. Indeed, he'd done nothing at all to earn her ire.

So she stood there, and waited to hear what the old Toa had to say.

IC: Taja | Po-Koro

Taja fired a freeze disk and was satisfied to see a blazing pool of gasoline instantly go out when the disk struck, its flames starved of oxygen. She looked around for her next target. Nearby, a Matoran was struggling to get from under the rubble of a destroyed hut. The De-Toa tried budging one of the large pieces that he was pinned under, but it was too heavy, and she was afraid that moving any of the smaller stones might cause it to collapse and crush him.

"Cover your ears," she told him. He looked confused, but obeyed. Taja took a deep breath and focused, uncomfortably aware that this villager's life was in her hands, and she was attempting something she'd never tried before. If this went wrong— no, she wouldn't even think about it.

Stars help me.

Reaching deep inside, she tapped into the vibrations of her elemental energy. Sans had taught her to pull these vibrations out of her body and into reality to create sound, but all she had done so far was use this technique to unleash clumsy blasts from her fingertips. This operation would require something far more precise. Shutting out the Matoran's panicked breathing, she placed a hand on the large slab of rock, ready to try and blast it away without—

Wait.

Was she imagining it?

No. The rock was vibrating too.

It was so quiet she almost couldn't tell; even with her hearing muted and her palm on its surface, she could barely make it out. The stone seemed to ripple softly against her fingertips, resonating at a frequency far lower than anything she had heard before. The oscillations of its composite parts were slow, but they were there. Just like Taja could feel the resonance of her own bones, so this stone had a resonant frequency of its own.

She thought back to the icy towers of Ko-Metru, and how they had shivered when she accidentally unleashed a blast of sound. They had trembled like icicles about to fall. She realized now that they had been responding to the vibrations in the air, shivering in tune with the her soundwaves. Suppose the same principle applied here? If she could find the resonant frequency of this stone, she could echo it back until it shivered to pieces.

Listening through her fingertips, Taja closed her eyes and began to feed her elemental energy into the rock slab in long, low oscillations. She slowed the vibrations until they were nearly undetectable, then began to adjust the frequency one note at a time. The stone remained unresponsive for a long time, and she began to fear it wouldn't work— but then she felt it. The stone was echoing back this last note. She could feel the vibrations of her sound bouncing between its molecules, rippling through the large rock like water. She fed more energy into it, looping the rock's own vibrations back into itself in a feedback loop. It began to tremble like the towers had; she could sense the vibrations pulling it apart, loosening the bonds that held it together.

Then, with a crack!, the stone split in half, each piece falling to the ground in a shower of dust. The Matoran coughed as Taja opened her eyes and pulled him out from the pile of rubble. A cursory glance over him revealed no life-threatening injuries, but she figured she had better get him back to Triage anyway.

As they walked away, Taja looked back at the stone. It lay there under the sun like a broken monument to something she hadn't known she could do. A rush of pride swept through her for a brief moment. She felt like a Toa.

IC: Mega - Zakaz, Po-Koro

"Sorry about choosin' on the fly like that, Yaushe." Mega said, quietly and genuinely. "And, yeah. Just be grateful you figured it out like this, and not whilst doin' repairs on the dang thing!" She chuckled, keeping an eye out as promised.

"Oh! The name's Mega, by the way. Reckon I probably shoulda said that earlier, right pumpkin?"

IC: Zaliyah - Metru-Koro

IC Stannis & Leklo | Sans' Hut

"No, Sans," Stannis intoned forcefully. "Regretfully, it is you who are mistaken... about a great many things." The rebuke was an unexpected one; after all, Stannis was regarded as a steadfast champion for the Matoran, and to contradict a turaga was generally seen as taboo.

That same notion caused Leklo to stir with discomfort. He'd worked alongside Sans and grew to respect the little elder and sought to defend his honor against even someone as the Wanderer. "With respect, Toa Stannis, I do not feel that—"

"Young toa..." Stannis said and effectively silenced him with a gentle shake of his head. No.

"At this moment the extant Barraki Kings hold Metru Nui, it's resources, it's technology," he began. "Lieutenant Zaliyah's master has all the advantages the City affords him, and we, the refugees from the breaking apart of our universe, do not have any advantages here. Pridak knows this, Zaliyah knows this, and every single Matoran knows this, even the faithful ones. If this comes to war anew, Sans, we will die. And perhaps that is the fate Destiny intends for us, perhaps that is what our cycle of life shall be, but I have lived my whole life seeking to preserve life wherever I could.

"Wars cause atrocities on all sides. Terrible things were wrought by all sides, and it caused my marrow to ache in grief every time I witnessed the evils of war. We hopped from island to island, took every advantage we were afforded, and committed sins all in the name of our God's will. I still believe the Matoran are Mata Nui's Folk—and yes, I believe the League was in the wrong from the start for rebelling against the will of the Great Spirit—... but that does not alter the reality we now share. We may have won battles across the city but we lost the war, and the fact Ehlek and Pridak, who we faced, are the extant ones proves this to be true. I know what they are capable of affecting on us should they want.

"Now is not the time for boasts and bluffs, turaga, now is the time for preservation and resourcefulness, and Zaliyah's offer of respite is all the resource we can harvest this season. And by both her words and Pridak's designs we know there is at least one specific thing they want from Metru Koro."

The old man who seemed so withered and worn the night before looked stronger and alight with passion then, his wizened eyes looking mournful and sullen even while his bony fingers emphatically pierced the air like spears. He took no joys in what life had wrought for him, and yet he could not hide from the grim reality beset on all sides. As a Wanderer, Stannis was learned of the lands, the lore, and all the prophesies both fulfilled and forgotten, an arch-priest who never ceased to give up his resolve, but people commonly mistook him for an idealist follower of Mata Nui when in fact Stannis was a pragmatist at heart who simply followed the currents of Destiny. If death awaited him then so it would be but he wanted to preserve everyone else from that fate all the same. The Matoran from Metru Nui did not deserve the death that Pridak and Ehlek so surely demanded and could so easily obtain.

"Fellows, Mata Nui is dead." He paused then, letting the words settle in the minds of those who retained their faith. Altogether the toa and turaga realized one by one the terrible fact that if anyone knew such a thing to be true it would be Toa Stannis, while Zaliyah was more like to nod and grimly smile. "We must fend for ourselves for now until He returns, whatever that may end up looking like as the Cycle continues. For all our people's sake, I cannot fathom war to be the path we are supposed to choose at this moment. Reason, not passion, needs to prevail here."

He sighed heavily and shivered like a great oak shaking its leaves off in the late autumn but still maintained his image of aged strength. "Now... let us altogether discuss a way to live a little while longer on this desolate, Godforsaken rock we have all found ourselves wrecked upon.

IC: Barius - Po-Koro

Barius took a deep breath as he carried the Wagon over towards the breach. Was he really gonna get away? Hahaha, gods. I am good.

Getting the wrecked rig he was holding through the uneven piles of supplies that filled the hole in the wall was troublesome, but with no one daring to interfere, he got through with it in but a few moments, with only a little bit of additional damage to the E Street. It'd buff right out, really. Maybe.

Once he was clear of the walls, he followed Corrivalis in the direction that the rest of the war band had gone. It was hard to believe that he was home free after such a tense encounter, but it seemed that was the case. He settled into his armor, releasing a massive sigh, before bursting into a fit of laughter. "Hahaha! Cor, that was great! Thanks for the help back there."

Grinning, he leaned over to examine the Toa that was bound up on the back of the lizard. He wasn't sure what they were gonna do with him, but having him was definitely a plus, right?

"No, there is nothing to discuss.  If you wrongfully believe that the League holds all the cards, then that's even further point for this discussion to be over."  Sans turned from the old Po-Toa, and faced the Hordika one last time.  "Get out of Metru-Koro.  If you do not know the way, then I know two Toa who can escort you through the city gates.  Tell Pridak the Mask of Creation is gone.  Forever.  I would sooner die then dig it up from the countryside.  We do not live in fear, here, nor will any of us shy away from defending our new way of life.  I would hope the Barraki would be smart enough to at least realize the futility of any further hostilities or provocations towards us.  They fought for Metru-Nui, now they can have it.  Leave, now.  I will hear nothing further."  Sans turned his back towards the Ce-Hordika and stared down Stannis.  "You will stay.  I would have a word with you alone."

IC: Zaliyah - Sans' Hut

She had been on board with everything Stannis had been saying, right up until he'd started preaching about the Great Spirit's will. But the wisdom of his words still rang true, though it proved insufficient to sway Sans.

"You know... when I suggested this plan to Pridak, he all but laughed in my face," she said, "They haven't been interested in diplomacy for the last two centuries, he said, so I was a fool to expect any different."

She sighed, "I thought if anyone was going to ruin a shot at peace it was going to be Pridak himself. The last thing I expected was that I would be forced to go back to Metru Nui and tell him he was right all along."

Turning away, she added one final barb over her shoulder as she moved towards the exit, "You and he are more alike than either of you realise."

Triage kinda liked when Mega called him pumpkin. Was that weird? Focus, idiot.

"Maybe, but now I know," he replied, shrugging again. The medic looked down at the dashboard to address Yaushe, since, well...you know. Van. "I guess it was a Skakdi raid, village never saw it coming. We spotted the smoke from Metru-Koro and booked it here to help. By the time we got around, those guys were retreating."

Corrivalis acknowledged Barius' gratitude with a simple nod. "These new Toa certainly seem tenacious," he said, after a moment, "What do you intend to do with this one?"

For his part, Reson was also curious to hear the answer to that question.

IC Stannis | Sans' Hut

The Wanderer glowered morosely as the envoys departed. Bitterly resigned from realizing his wisdom and harsh truths fell on deaf ears he simply muttered for all to hear, "In war there is no innocence, only sadness." The next time he would see Zaliyah would be in battle again, he was sure.

He stayed as Sans had bidden but he looked even more ancient than before, as if the life had been sapped from beneath his robes.

IC: Sans, Turaga's Hut

"You were wrong to defy me in front of them."  Sans walked to his couch and plumped down on it, holding his face in his hands.  "We should not have met with them inside the city.  We should've met somewhere outside, so they couldn't see up close the state of affairs.  If the League marched en mass tomorrow, how many Matoran could be saved, truly?"  Sans lifted his head and stared at Stannis.  "They've got the means, they just don't know it.  I thought it was just Ehlek, which would have been better.  But Pridak, he is sure to crave bloodshed.  We could have paid them any price and he would still crave war.  I wonder what state he's in, since our fight, both mentally and physically."  Sans paused for a moment, and continued again, after a sigh, "I wish those ex-League members hadn't all left, now.  It would be nice to send someone into their ranks, to stir up dissent between the two remaining warlords.  Maybe that would be our best hope, to let them become distracted by their own infighting."  Sans shook his head.  "No, the best course of action is to leave each other alone.  You made it clear you don't approve, Stannis, but I said what I had to say.  Imagine the harsh words all those dead Matoran would have for the League.  I speak for the fallen, the forgotten.  The Matoran paid the price when the Barraki invaded Metru-Nui, we both saw it first hand.  It's better to appear strong, and defiant, resilient, and full of fight.  Otherwise, we look like injured prey, waiting for the killing blow."

"What's done is done.  You don't have to like it, but you will not disrupt the Unity we have worked to build in Metru-Koro.  If you have any qualms, bring them to me in private.  The Matoran need us to be strong, not fighting among ourselves.  Whether it's the League Remnant, or these Zakazians, or some unknown enemy, peace won't last forever.  We need to be as strong as ever, as impossible as that may seem.  It was never the technology of Metru-Nui that gave the City its strength, it was the spirit of the Matoran.  That same spirit lives on, here.  If you're really so worried about how that parlay went, though, you could put off your mission for a bit and help improve the city..."  Sans turned to look towards Leklo and Korruhn.  "I have a few idea son how I could use you two. Let's discuss how your explorations went, then think of how best to use your talents.  We will need brave Toa in these perilous times."

IC: Barius - Leaving Po-Koro

"Persistent is one word. Annoying is another," Barius replied. His thoughts went back to Kat, and to the Toa mere feet away from him that had volunteered to take the place of that Matoran. Still, annoying as they were, he had to respect them, in a way. They adhered to their principles.

So far, anyway. He reckoned he'd eventually get to see how they held up when the chips were down.

"I'll let 'Boss' make that decision. But I figure we'll wind up lettin' him go in a couple weeks. Give or take."

He grinned at the Toa. "Depends if they've got that tribute waitin' for us, I guess. If they do, no reason to provoke 'em by breakin' our word."

"Wait... you aint the boss?" Reson spoke up.

Dizzy and weakened from the loss of his mask, and hanging upside-down from the back of the ACR, Reson wasn't in the best position to make much sense of what he was seeing, but his ears still worked just fine.

If this monster wasn't the one in charge... then how powerful was the true leader?

IC: Barius - Leaving Po-Koro

"It's about image, Cor," Barius said. Though younger than his companion, he adopted the tone of an elder imparting a vital message. "On its own, I'd never give him back the rig he lost on his own. But when I set the Wagon in front of him, and everyone sees that he lost it, and I got it back? That change in perception is as deadly as any blade."

He chuckled, and his tone became casual once more. "Deadlier, ever since he got his hands on that last Kraata." Jerk was bouncing javelins off his skin. But Barius, too, would get his to that degree of power, someday.

"Perception," Corrivalis replied vaguely. That was something he understood. When the warskaks had first 'adopted' him, there were many who'd looked to him with discomfort and uncertainty. But over time, their perception had changed, and he had become accepted among them.

Barius intended to make the others accept that he could be a stronger leader.

"I'm sorry, uh, what's a kraata?" Reson piped up.

IC Stannis | Sans' Hut

The Wanderer said nothing of the spat, firmly believing he was in the right and holding his disdain back for everyone's benefit. He crossed a line and had nothing to show for it. His immense displeasure was already noted and no amount of telling the turaga of the recklessness displayed as he just gambled the lives of all the refugees on a bad bet. Stannis was crestfallen, not just at how useless his wisdom was at stemming the dissolution of parlay but at how little had been gained from it. He revealed things in a final gambit to restore order and perhaps salvage some precious time to ready themselves for the greater war that was to come, but there was no time left, he felt, and he discovered that despite his reservations about the warlord's aspirations he almost wished Zataka would come in and assume command anew. At least she was a respected diplomat and disciplined soldier who would not take the waning hourglass and dash it upon the floor.

A part of him wondered where the woman was. Would she even care to take control of an exiled Matoran settlement, all that was left of the shimmering isle Dume left her at first? Perhaps, perhaps not. His mind shifted back to the present.

He bit his tongue and chose not to speak. Stannis' confidence in Turaga Sans was a foundation laid in quicksand; he had little left, and only a miracle would salvage it. And yet, Stannis remained dutiful to the last. While he needed to chase after the Mask of Light to better defend against the Aspects to the south, he needed to stay behind a while longer and help shore up the defenses of Metru Koro, inspire hope where there was to be none, and train the militia of fledgling toa Dume had left as his legacy. The matoran needed their high priest around, and so he chose accordingly. "I am staying here for a while," he said. "There are things that I must attend to before leaving." Unsaid, yet still understood, was his utter distaste of Sans' choice of policy.

Who are you to argue matters of Faith and Spirit with me, he wanted to say, but wisely did not. Who are you, indeed.

Who am I? his mind wondered anew. He knew the answer, of course. Just an old man who is too tired to sleep.

IC: Knichou, Po-Koro

Now that the immediate danger was over, the Taku descended to be a few meters above the ground and dropped its anchor into the sand at the center of the village. The crew quickly began properly unloading the rest of the ship's cargo. Knichou told Berys to radio him if anything suspicious happened, and then the captain finally left the bridge.

The Toa of iron slid down the ladder to the cargo bay, and walked past a groaning Dalu to jump out to the sands below. He looked at the carnage around him. This was not how he expected his first visit to Po-Koro to go. He walked through the streets rather aimlessly, looking for the bodies of Nale and Kanohi that he could only assume were right around the corner.

IC [Strange Tunnels]:

The unlikely quartet stayed still, waiting for the something to emerge from the darkness - but nothing came. After a few seconds of remaining silent, they recognized the noise. It sounded like...drums. Drums in the deep?

IC [Kunok McGrokk]:

The trader briefly looked at his hand, turning it over and rubbing his index and middle against the tip of his thumb, somewhat surprised they were still attached. This was Yumiwak he was dealing with, after all. It had been a calculated risk, to see how much she was willing to put up with in order to get the information. She wants this lady baaad…

“No catch.” he finally said. “Well...beyond the nature of the goods.” he added, with a sheepish smile.

-----

A minute later, the trader and the trio stood outside the back of the shoppe, facing an outbuilding. The buzzing of myriad insects was all around them - insects drawn to the building by the foulest stench in the air, the funk of seemingly fourty thousand years. Said funk emanated from a rather large pile of hides stored right in the entrance to the barn. They were completely unprocessed, shaggy, covered in mud and dirt and things best left unsaid.

Seemingly unperturbed by the horror on display, McGrokk picked up the topmost one from the pile and held it up into the sun. Underneath the layer of grime, a striped pattern was barely visible.

“Fresh Muaka furs.”

IC Kathrine of the Flame - Po-Koro:

As the last stragglers left and the cleanup began, Kathrine was left.....confused.

She'd waited, and waited, for Reson to give some kind of signal, some indication that the time to strike was now, and it had never come. She watched even now, as the retreating group became little more than glints of light reflected off of metal in the distance.

The power she held slowly bled away as waves of heat.

Why hadn't he done something?

Why were all these Toa around here so different?

How strong was that Skakdi, anyway? He had that weird metal armor on with some kinda machines on or...in it? Kat had never seen armor like that before. It had been very strong. He had picked up that whole vehicle by himself after all! Part of her wanted to fight him again, this time without any distractions.

She moved through the village, moving rubble and snuffing fires, when she came across the strange stuff that Reson had left sticking out of the sand. Kat frowned. That wouldn't do. It was kind of a weird weapon, to her anyway, but then all weapons were a little strange to her. She'd never needed one, and her original Toa tool had long been left behind. She didn't even remember what it had been.

Even so, it was a deft and graceful hand that tugged the tuning staff from the dark sands. It was utilitarian. Definitely more of a tool than a weapon. At least for Kat. Who could say what a Toa of Sonic's could do with such an instrument? She'd have to get it back to him, once he came back.

She was sure he would, one way or another.

She gave the blunted tips an experimental flick and was momentarily delightfully distracted by the pleasant ring produced by the action. The staff found its way to her back, and she continued her vigil through the village.

IC: Zaliyah - Metru-Koro

I tried.

The misshapen Hordika stumbled dazedly through the ramshackle constructs of Metru-Koro. Her heart hammered against her ribs, her breaths came in sharp and fast, her steps were uneven and uncertain. She felt like she was on the verge of panic, and she couldn't understand it.

They wouldn't listen.

She couldn't understand any of what had just happened.

They didn't care.

Her foot slipped in the sand, and she flung out her arm, catching herself on a support post beside her.

Y̵͜o̷͠͞͞ú͜ ̢͜c̶̨͠a͏͢r̀͝͠҉e̶͡ ̴͘͘t̛͘o̵̵̷͡͠o̴̧̧̕ ̷̶͏̷m̸̧̀͠͞u̷̵͝c҉͘҉̢h̷̶̷̀͡.̴̧̢̡͠

Her claws dug in so tight the wood splintered.

She'd tried to do the right thing. She'd tried to push for peace. She'd tried to prevent more unnecessary blood being spilled.

Perhaps the lie she'd tried telling herself for all of this time wasn't a lie after all: she truly wasn't a Toa anymore.

She'd thought the refugees would recognise the futility of their situation, grab the lifeline she was offering, but they struck it away with spite and stubbornness. She couldn't save them from Pridak. She couldn't save them from themselves.

Defeated, dejected, and disappointed, Zaliyah took several moments to steady and compose herself, then continued towards the Ripple.

IC: Ulkarr and Klawne (Mountains)

With a wave of his hand, Ulkarr bade the shadows that surrounded them to dissipate. He went back the way the came, towards Po-Koro, expecting at least Nale to follow.

Klawne meanwhile, tried to pick up the Vo-Matoran's body. But it was clear that she simply did not possess the physical strength necessary to do so.

IC: Ostrox and Navu (Metru-Koro, Outside Sans's Hut)

"Well," Ostrox said as he saw Zaliyah leave, looking despondent. "It seems the 'negotiations' have finished. We'll be leaving now." Ostrox tried to make his way past Falh and Datrox and follow Zaliyah to The Ripple.

Huh. That was quick. But... why was the League's ambassador sad?

IC Kanohi - the Mountains

Kanohi grappled down to the Turaga, and begin to lift at the Matoran. She was heavy, and he lacked the strength of a Po-Matoran or an Onu-Matoran. Still he had the stamina and endurance to withstand the strain of her weight if he needed too, though hopefully there would be a better way.

Um, Pardehi,” Kanohi spoke, “I … I do not know if you wish to come with us or to leave to help Po-Koro. But before you decide, could you help us build a stretcher to carry her. I have made some before, but I am no medic. With it we might be able to carry Voka easier. Well I mean, I guess you would already know that, sorry.”

IC:Pardehi - Central Mountains @Harvali@Tarn@Toru Nui

"Don't worry, I have one ready right now." He laid out the stretcher next to Voka. It was a crude contraption, a sheet of Harakekke suspended between two bamboo poles, but it would do what it needed to. He knelt down behind Voka, taking her shoulders in his hands. "Kanohi, help me get her into the stretcher. We can carry her to safety together."

IC Kanohi - the Mountains

Kanohi nodded and strained to raise her legs. The two Matoran shakily lifted her up, before laying her on the stretcher. As she lay down she wheezed out a moan, and Kanohi smiled. Even if they weren’t there for Po-Koro, they still saved one Matoran.

And that brought up another victory. “Um, Toa, you should probably take this,” he spoke to Toa Nale, handing her the Impact Crystal Launcher. “Po-Koro might need repairs after whatever the emergency it faced, and like the Ko-Matoran said, this weapon’s crystals might be able to be used to grow a Knowledge Tower.

With that Kanohi bowed and walked backwards from the Toa, before leaning above the stretcher. He grabbed one end of the medical tool, ready to lift when Pardehi gave the go ahead.

IC: Datrox Karvan - Metru-Koro

"Now, wait a minute--"

I began following Ostrox and his ally, the latter of which looked...sad about something. I'd never seen a Leaguer sad before, come to think of it. "Just what happened in there?"

IC: Nale Vella - Mountains

Nale turned the launcher over in her hand. "I'll see what I can do with it," she said, and bowed slightly in response to Kanohi. The Fa-Toa smiled at the Fe-Matoran. "Be safe."

She then turned and caught up with Ulkarr as the pair headed to Po-Koro.

IC: Korio Karasha - McGrokk's

Korio was visibly unfazed by the funky furs, as he stared blankly at them and McGrokk. He looked like he'd spaced out again.

IC: Barius - On the road

"What was the point of all this?" Reson asked. "We didn't do anythin' to you."

It was the kind of question that could send you spiraling into metaphysical contemplation if you let it. Barius didn't let it.

"Yeah, well, maybe you should've," was all he said in response.

The Aspect's face lit up as the group began to realize what the sound was. "Drums! That means people playing them, right?" He started moving eagerly in the direction the sound was coming from. "C'mon! I wanna see what kind of people live down here!"

IC: Zai - Zakaz, Outside McGrokk's

Zai also stared, but less blankly than out of sheer disgust.

"You must be joking." She muttered, seeming to prickle up in a double take.

IC: Mega - Zakaz, Po-Koro (Mystery Van)

"We came thinkin' we could help, but..." She trailed off, managing a faux-smile in front of the Bo-Toa.  "Well, we're here now, ain't we?"

She almost immediately changed her glance, however, when she spotted a wounded Matoran clutching at a stump that used to be an arm. "Yaushe, Tri!" She called attention to the front, hoping Yaushe would stop the van and let Triage out the back.

IC: Falh - Zakaz, Metru-Koro (Stop! You have violated the law!)

Breathing still not right, he mirrored Datrox, Felnas covered eyes feverishly looking over the beast that accompanied Ostrox.

"You know what comes next." He murmured to Datrox. He hoped the situation would convince his brother into expediting the inevitable.
