About Metallica... Yeah, I can dig Load and Reload etc. http://www.bzpower.com/board/public/style_emoticons/default/cool.png St. Anger is lower on my list, but Death Magnetic is pretty nice.

I own very little music, have no favorite bands or composers, and have no clue what sort of genres I like. I'm trying to remedy this by trying out some new stuff. I've heard next to no metal, so I might as well give some a go.So, would anybody here have recommendations for a guy who's completely new to the genre?

I am in concurrence with the Iron Maiden suggestions. Also, Kamelot is a great band to listen to. http://www.bzpower.com/board/public/style_emoticons/default/cool.png

Eh, I don't see any reason for them to do anything about it. It's fine with the rules and everything.

Pretty much what others said: Iron Maiden and earlier Metallica are quite accessible. I would also recommend trying some Alice Cooper. So, that made me think, what was everyone's first metal song/album/band that they heard? For me, I heard Dragula by Rob Zombie not long after it came out and totally digged it. Back when they actually showed good music on TV.

My first metal band was Demons & Wizards, but that's somewhat unknown power metal. :PYeah, Metallica would be an interesting start, but King's X would be a pretty cool band to start with. They're a little hard rock at sometimes but they're pretty much metal, and little but the third or fourth album. They have some interesting vocals, which can be quite repetitive, but I'd say King's X would be a decent start into metal. Plus, it's a little softer.

Up, down, turn around, please don't let me hit the ground

My first metal band was actually Fight. You know, Rob Halford's groove metal band? That Fight.CONTORTIIOON IIIIN MYYY HEAAAD!!!!! :PYeah, metal's a good genre to get into, it's pretty enlightening and more informed lyric and music-wise to me. Just don't get into pop, whatever you do. That's the complete antithesis of it, nothing but sub-human stupidity and commercialism, to me, at least.EDIT: Why the word filter blocks the dialect form of "my," I'll never know.

Way to stereotype an entire genre based on mainstream stuff.I could look at Bullet for My Valentine or Five Finger Death Punch and say the exact same thing about metal.Don't listen to him, Brickeens: There's a lot of good pop out there, if you know where to look for it. Edited by Laughin'Man

Plenty of good pop around, especially in countries like South Korea and Japan.

Five Finger Death Punch

I loves me some FFDP. :P

Something doesn't sound right about FFDP to melike the treble is cut on everything when the guitarist uses distortionand I'm somewhat of an audiophile. as such, I hate the sound of everything they doMusically, they aren't bad, lyrics are meh, but otherwise okayalso, Modest Mouse you guys, omg

I agree with the Five Finger Death Punch are gross statement.

Also, I've pretty much had it with this condescending and elitist attitude of yours.

You clearly bypassed all the deathcore ###### he likes. Also, just discovered Cerebral Bore. Some pretty brutal death going on there.

oh yeah, Cerebral Bore are sweet. i was legit surprised when i found out the vocalist is a girl.btdubs Napalm Death just premiered a track from Utilitarian. check it out, it's called "leper colony"honestly i don't know how i feel about it. some parts are awesome but things like the chorus are just awkward and don't sound that great. guess i'll wait for the full album to make a final judgement.

So I've just discovered Fates Warning and Symphony X. Both are turning out to be fantastic. From what I've heard so far, they can't rival DT in my opinion, but they are loads better than Queensryche (I love them too BTW). That said, Symphony X is a really stupid name.

Speaking of Fates Warning, check out Arch/Matheos. Pretty dang good progressive metal from the old vocalist and their guitarist. And sorry about the pop bit earlier. I've actually never heard of "underground" pop, that was a mistake on my part. :(

haha i actually like a good amount of mainstream pop (katy perry and lady gaga in particular). sure it's not "deep" or anything but sometimes i just want something mindless and catchy. don't feel bad about not liking something, just listen to what you like and ignore what you don'texpect a lot of edits, my typing is so off tonight

Oh and on the first band subject, my first metal band was Metallica. I always thought of Coheed And Cambria as being pretty metal, but I guess they don't technically count. So Metallica was my first legitimate metal band, starting out with Death Magnetic and MoP.

God I hope that Jesse comes back. Alive or Just Breathing is an incredible album, my favorite, actually. Killswitch is in serious need of some creative readjustment, seeing that their last album sounded way too much like the metalcore that plays on the radio. If I need that, I'll listen to Bullet, thank you.

i don't think anyone would deny that kse had some awesome albums under their belts. maybe now that howard left jesse will come back and return them to their former glory.

Agreed. Aside from AoJB I also thought The End of Heartache was pretty great, as were a few songs on As Daylight Dies, although I mostly enjoy that one for sentimental reasons since it was the first KSE album I purchased (and, by extension, my first metal album).

If I need that, I'll listen to Bullet, thank you.

Ew. Ew ew ew ew ew. Oh god, ew.Anyway agreed with both of you about Jesse. If they got him back, it'd be like the coolest thing ever for my inner 13-year-old.

well, even if jesse doesn't come back there's always Times of Grace who are pretty cool from what i've heard. not as good as aojb-era kse, but still pretty good. btdubs i would totally take the second s/t over anything by bfmv, that band is just ughhhhhhh to meone more thing i think we can all agree on is that Adam D is a legendary producer. he did produce The Dead Walk which is one of my favorite albums everalso i am super disappointed that Thy Art Is Murder jumped on the djent bandwagon. they used to be really cool techy-deathcore but that new song is making me lose hopeany of you guys bad enough dudes to like I Declare War? that s/t album crushes

that's really, really sad. he's certainly left a mark on the entire genre of metal, i mean he basically created it along with the rest of sabbath. fortunately the form he has is curably if it's caught early and has a pretty large survival rate. hooray for the bright side!on a more positive note, At The Drive-In reformed which i'm sure will excite most you if you're cool enough to like them

i am mad excited about the refused reunionas for architects, i can see why you guys would hate the here and now but i personally like it. it's just good catchy post-hardcore and that's enough for me. check out the first two songs (day in day out and learn to live) and if you like thoseyou'll probably like the album. luckily if you don't like the new style their new single devil's island shows signs of going back to their older style.

i won't deny that they seem really boring, i thought that too at first. they're really more about groove over everything else which i enjoy a lot. i hope that you would've figured out by now that 90% of what i listen to is deathcore rubbish haha Edited by Idunnolol

There is this wonderful thing called "joking," you know? Maybe you should try looking it up sometime; no need to thank me. *Sarcastic smile*I may not like deathcore but I cannot stop others from listening to it. Your point is what exactly? I also like slam death, technical death, goregrind and melodic death just so you know. :P
