Discontinued Lego Series

Hey guys, haven't been on here in awhile. Recently I have become obsessed with several old lego series that I own sets from, including Spybotics, Exo-Force, Rock Raiders, Alpha Team, and the list goes on. I was so disappointed when they each ended. Do any of you feel the same, go ahead and post a series you once liked that were disappointed when it ended, and maybe disappointed in the ending that was given.Wouldn't it be cool to see these series reintroduced? join our cause and we can all try to get lego to reintroduce series that we once loved.

Not necessarily disappointed, but I was a great fan of Alpha Team and was a bit sad that it ended and was more or less replaced with the inferior Dino Attack. There were other earlier themes I greatly enjoyed as well such as Orient Expedition and Arctic, but in the case of Arctic I was still too young to follow it with dedication. But anyway, I´ve never really been as dedicated to a theme as I´ve been to BIONICLE, Ninjago or Hero Factory, and luckily two of those are still ongoing well. :)-Gata signoff.jpg

I'd remove that link if I were you, BZPower doesn't allow links to other forums, and on top of that, that LEGO forum specifically can tend to have stuff (namely stronger language) that would be removed by a moderator in an instant if it were on BZP. I know this might sound weird considering I'm a fairly active member of that forum, but you should remove that link before a moderator here does for you.

Shame on me for not even bothering to check out the link. You´ve got to excuse me, it´s around 23:30 here and I´ve had a three-hour exam today and I´ve just finished watching a movie with a friend after having two friends at home for several hours and one of them for ten. Anyway, thanks for pointing this out, jamesster. ;) joev14, I suggest you remove that link for the reasons jamesster has mentioned.EDIT: And now I´ve missed that you´ve already edited your post. No, I have just always seen LEGO as being about introducing new ideas all the time, letting them play out their best potential, and then moving on to new, cool ideas.I do like returns of classics though, and it happens occasionally. Rarely with much more than a set or two, though, and often modified greatly. But really, the beauty of LEGO is that there's always MOCing, roleplaying, and fan fiction -- art, you name it -- that's still possible even when these lines end. :) Including making new things for it in the plastic, something few toy systems allow. ^_^

Oh god, Spybotics. I had the Technojaw T55 but I wanted all of them.If LEGO released a new Spybotics series I would be so very happy.

I own an extra purple one (Shadowstrike S70) that I'm selling on ebay for $250, comes with the box and everything...only been built once and turned on twice. you want it? Johnny Thunder. Jake Raines not needed. Nuff said.I think the main reason I miss themes these days is that they all feel so flat. Johnny Thunder had how many books and comics, was featured in how many games, etc. and Jake Raines is just some guy looking for a pyramid and then we never hear of him again. Same with Rock Raiders: the sets are poorly designed, Power Miners is better in that (except the color scheme), but the story in RR was so deep (although contradictory) and the characters all had depth (which is why I hate the Power Miner Rock Goblins, they're so derpy and stupid and all they do is FART FART FART).If Lego could make themes with the same magic they used to have I'd not be as sad to see old themes go.

I wish I had been able to buy the Spybotics when they were around. :/Other than that, Exo-Force, so very much. A lot of its sets easily beat Bionicle's, IMO.~B~

Even thought I only bought a few sets. I'd like to see a return of Alpha Team and Johnny Thunder. Both themes were good. Also that series with the technic minifigures was cool even if I only had one set from it. I can't remember what it was called but it had these type of figures in it. http://media.peeron.com/pics/inv/custpics/2698c01px4.jpg

Not at that price. :TPlus the software is antiquated and I highly doubt I could run it.So yeah I'm probably not going to buy any of the older ones, but if newer ones come out I would totally consider it.

The only theme I was genuinely sad to see go was Bionicle. As I got older I started to find the story too young for me so maybe it was for the better that it stopped where I can print my own designs onto the story and fondly remember the actual story. I still think I would've preferred it to continue, even more so if its attitude matured with me.Hopefully it will be revived in 10 years along with a blockbuster movie like transformers, only hopefully not as disappointing.

Umm... Gatanui, Alpha Team was never replaced by Dino Attack; the two have next to nothing in common. I was actually completely okay with the end of Alpha Team, as it had changed so much through the years that it never held much interest for me after the first year. Comparing Alpha Team's beginning with its end would leave someone who lacked context with the impression that they were completely different themes.Usually I'm okay with themes ending. Bionicle had a good end, as did Adventurers (with the differently titled Orient Expedition). I was pretty disappointed when Exo-Force ended, because there was a lot left to be done with the theme, and the ending was sort of left hanging without tying up any loose ends at all. I was also disappointed with the end of the Avatar: The Last Airbender theme, which I think never got a fair shot thanks to a combination of factors (specifically its timing and the licensing arrangements). And although Galidor was a pretty iffy theme, I liked the TV series and was disappointed when the sets proved incapable of supporting it, leaving it to end on a major cliffhanger. But most of the time I don't mind when a theme ends, as old themes ending and new ones picking up is a natural cycle in LEGO.

The one theme whose ending left me majorly disappointed was Space Police III, simply because I had hoped for a full-scale Blacktron revival before that theme bit the dust. Since nowadays TLG almost never does "single-faction" themes, hopes for a Blacktron revival almost entirely hinge on a Space Police theme being around, seeing as the Space Police and Blacktrons are classic adversaries. We did get one Blacktron minifigure in Space Police III and one in the Collectible Minifigures, but I think hopes for a full Space Police vs. Blacktron theme will have to wait quite some time now. With that said, I didn't necessarily feel that Space Police III "deserved" to last longer, or that I hadn't gotten my fair share of sets from that theme. Themes come and go-- ones like BIONICLE, City, and Star Wars that last many years are the exception rather than the norm.Speaking of which, out of licensed themes, while it didn't bother me at the time, it was a shame that the Avatar: The Last Airbender theme didn't get a longer run. Obviously the franchise doesn't sell merchandise as well as Star Wars, Harry Potter, or Spongebob Squarepants, but the initial run was kind of sub-par and there was so much unexplored potential in the series as a whole. I didn't really become an A:TLA fan until the LEGO sets had gone the way of the dodo, but it was a real shame that the theme wasn't more successful in the first place. And of course while I didn't really feel Exo-Force should have lasted longer, I definitely felt it should have had a more satisfactory conclusion. Unlike BIONICLE, Exo-Force's story was deliberately left open-ended, which was a real downer when we knew there were big secrets left to be revealed about Meca-One's origin and Keiken's past. I also disliked that Hitomi, one of the coolest characters IMO, played an entirely behind-the-scenes role in the final year and never got a battle machine of her own.

The theme that really got me into LEGO was Jack Stone, but I'm not really disappointed from it being discontinued. I'm actually glad, because when it was discontinued, I got myself into Town and World City, which have been replaced quite well with City. I haven't ever really been disappointed in a LEGO theme being discontinued, and I will usually get a set or two, or even more in almost every new theme.I do however find myself building older sets for the fun of it a lot. I've rebuilt several old Star Wars sets, along with some Adventurers, World City, and other various sets.

I really miss the Black Knights, Spyrius, the Royal Knights, Aquazone, and BIONICLE, but alas, their time has truly passed. In this age of cutesy minifigure overload, good-vs.-bad-in-one-set, and increasing Chinese plastic production, I feel like it is best that my old childhood favorites rest in peace.

I wish Orient Expedition hadn't ended. The sets were really cool, even if it was somewhat of a ripoff of Indiana Jones.

Bionicle. The ending seemed like an excuse for an ending for those who didn't bother to dig deeper and find more story. Sort of like the endings of Yu-Gi-Oh GX and 5D's as aired on 4Kids, where they wrapped up early so people didn't have to go online for the final plotline. Also, the Exo-Force cliffhanger was annoying.

As long as fans are still writing fan-fictions and building MOCs about it, I'm okay with Bionicle being officially discontinued.Exo-Force is a different story. I absolutely loved the sets (even though I didn't get many), and was disappointed when it suddenly ended around 2008.

I liked Jack Stone so much, as weird as that sounds. Those were some of my first non-DUPLO sets. I guess it was best for me that it ended because it encouraged me to move to World City.I also really like LEGO Agents, even though it didn't have much of a story.I wouldn't be able to pick any specific theme that I'd want to return, because I'm really falling in love with many current themes like Ninjago, Dino, and Alien Conquest.

Also, the Egyptian line of Adventurers. More ancient Egypt-type sets that aren't fantasy fantastical would be cool.

I thought Pharaoh's Quest was a good take on that year of Adventurers. It didn't have as many structures, but I thought it was a very nice theme, except I've only gotten one small set from it (7305 Scarab Attack). Set 7327 Scorpion Pyramid was certainly an improvement to the temple/pyramid in the Adventurers series.

I don't really understand why LEGO will spend so much to introduce a theme that only lasts 6 months or something. Even though I wasn't around at the time, I do enjoy the Adventurers line.

Most themes are designed to last longer than six months, but often it's not a case of sets being designed for shorter or longer runs, but rather a case of some themes selling better than others and thus getting stretched further than their initial plans. Of course, that isn't to say some themes aren't designed for the short term or long term.In AFOL circles, you get many complaints about long-lived themes like LEGO Star Wars or BIONICLE becoming repetitive. That's part of the reason short-term themes are designed. TLG creates a theme very different from their recent themes, but they don't want to drag it out for longer than they can keep it feeling innovative. So they plan it for a single wave. If it proves successful enough that TLG expects demand to rise or remain the same, a new wave of sets in that theme can be designed for the following year.

Man, there are so many old lines that I remember:Bionicle (obviously)Exo-ForceAlpha TeamRock RaidersArcticAqua RaidersMars MissionSpyboticsJohnny ThunderOrient ExpeditionKnights KingdomCastleJack StoneWorld CityThe list just goes on. I'm just listing sets from my time, even the ones that weren't that interesting like Castle and Aqua Raiders. Those others were just great. I own at least 1 set from each line (except Spybotics, those are still expensive even today).

Exo Force kind of fell off the face of the planet. It'd be kinda cool if they brought it back and at least resolved it.Also Bionicle. But that's obvious.Edit: Space Police III also.

Even though I only ever got two of them, I wanted so many more sets from the Life on Mars line. Although by the time Mars Mission came out, I was no longer interested in buying them, I think it was a great continuation of the Space theme, and to me was truly a succesor to Life on Mars.~|ET|~

  • 3 weeks later...

Definitely Alpha Team had some awesome sets, and Exo Force was the one I got really mad about. Ninjago doesn't have anything on massive mechs!!Oh, and Bionicle, and Mars Mission. All of these had great set designs, but most (except Bionicle of course!) could have used a more in depth story. If a theme had a story like Bionicle and lasted more than 3 years, that would be awesome, especially with great sets.
