Discussion of the development of and news about the upcoming movie Pacific Rim, due out next summer. News so far has been relatively slow, but will hopefully pick up as the movie enters post-production.The film will be about a series of monster attacks on coastal cities around the Pacific Ocean (hence the title) and the battles with the 'Jaeger' mechs built by humans to combat them. So think of this as Transformers meets Good Moviemaking, with some Evangelion thrown into the premise for good measure (except for the fact that the pilots aren't mentally scarred children). And given what Del Toro has said about the fight scenes so far, this is going to definitely be one of those movies I'll have to see on opening night.

When we're talking about the physicality of the fight, we ended up building several blocks of Hong Kong. And literally demolished them. We made a building and then we took down the buildings. We built command centers for the robots that were the size of the house. We started them on hydraulic rigs that shot and elevated them and moved them round so you could really get a sense of the physical nature of driving a robot like this.
We take the battles far and above! Two or three of them happen in places where there have never been a battle between kaiju and robots. From the bottom of the ocean to the atmosphere of the Earth. We have a battle in a storm at sea. Each battle we try to do differently. One is seen from the point of view of a single person, and we never cut away from that point of view.
So... thoughts? While I was a bit suspicious at first because of the premise's similarity to Neon Genesis Evangelion, I was quickly relieved when I found out that the rest of the plot was nothing like it. And in addition to the fact that a real live-action Eva movie would probably suck, this will most likely satisfy my desire for big-screen mecha for the time being. Edited by Cobui
