IC:"Nicole is not here. She departed for California along with one Matt Summers several days ago, and we have not heard from her since. Her destination was, if I recall correctly, Alameda. I would search there.""As for the invitation, I would request that you send the details to the school's email address. As the webmaster of this location, I will ensure that there is a representative from the Institute present. I cannot yet state who it will be, that depends on who is still here."The technopath paused. "Now, if that is all, please leave. We have a funeral of our own to sort out, and quite a few serious conversations will need to occur before the day is out."

Tera raised an eyebrow, glancing at Aleks, but said nothing. Aleksandr made his way over to Oyama: the Russian and the American were at the same height, so the young man didn't exactly have to look up to make eye contact. His chocolate brown eyes burned with rage, and even in his slightly injured state - a state inflicted on him, curiously enough, by trigger happy Enforcers - he was still a sight to behold all fired up.

"You know, I had no love for Pietro Maximoff or his goons," Aleks growled. "But do you really think that a genocide is what the people need to fall in line with the government? Not only are you making morons of yourselves in the eyes of the world, but you're conveniently ignoring the fact that you're not even giving your citizens the decency of a fair trial anymore. Nor are you taking into account that this is a private institution, and that your goon in the White House has no right to decide its future. Nicole's not here. Neither is the Headmaster."

The technopath watched silently, face an impassive mask, but in Tera's eyes, a note of something resembling approval glinted.

IC (Director Yuri)

On mainstream news stations everywhere, the deck of an aircraft carrier, with a hastily setup podium, was the center of attention. Behind it, the smoking ruin that once been Genosha stood….for a given value of the word stood. Standing upon the podium in full dress uniform, was Director Yuri Aleksandrov, head of MACE, the new American mutant enforcement agency. “A day ago, our great tragedy befall this nation. Mutant terrorists, led by a raving madman, attacked and slaughtered representatives of many nations….and the leader of our own.” Yuri hung his head for a moment, as did the representatives of the various NATO nations behind him. “Many escaped our wrath today, fleeing to the shadows like the cowardly animals they are.” Yuri raised his head, looking at the brilliant blue sky stretching above the mass of reporters before focusing once more on them. “This will not stand.”

“I stand before you today as the Director of MACE. A new agency for a new era, for too long have terrorists and vigilantes been allowed to run through our streets and disregard our laws….and to threaten our populace, the Enforcers, a legal federal agency were constantly attacked by the so-called heroes. The X-Men.  These same X-Men have a history of sheltering unregistered mutants and recklessly endangering the public. They are not the only group of Mutants to do this….look at the Brotherhood. Look at what they did just yesterday. Countless innocents…slaughtered. Blood on the streets of New York….unprovoked attacks on members of the law enforcement….and yet the Mutants still cry out about unfair laws and discrimination …..when many of them do not even respect the most basic laws of the land. For too long have they been allowed to run roughshod over the United States legal system. For too long has the threat of Mutant terrorists been ignored, perhaps those in command hoped the problem would resolve itself.”

“Ladies and gentlemen, the United States is done waiting. MACE is done waiting. No more will we allow our laws to be defied, no more will those who break them go unpunished. No longer will we wait for the terrorists to come to us. Our mandate is simple. We will enforce the laws of the land. We will let none flout them. If any mutant group raises their hands against the rightful law of the land….” He gestured to the city behind him. “We will meet them with due force. Mutants are dangerous. Their powers enable them to slaughter hundreds if they so wished. We do not allow citizens to drive around in battle tanks. We will not allow mutants to walk around with equivalent powers without some sort of regulation. Registration is a simple system. It allows us to keep on the dangerous mutants. It allows us to protect our citizens. We would certainly be interested in tracking a serial killer with a tank, or even a private citizen with one….and yet, the mutants scream about discrimination.”

“Well no more. We have our marching orders. From this day forwards, the laws of the land once again apply to Mutants. Of all groups, of all creeds, we are MACE. We will protect our communities, we will enforce the law and we will ensure the liberty of our nation is not threatened….”

OOC: Mouthing off to government represenatives. Smart.

"Shall this great kingdom, that has survived, whole and entire, the Danish depredations, the Scottish inroads, and the Norman conquest; that has stood the threatened invasion of the Spanish Armada, now fall prostrate before the House of Bourbon? Surely, my Lords, this nation is no longer what it was! Shall a people, that seventeen years ago was the terror of the world, now stoop so low as to tell its ancient inveterate enemy, take all we have, only give us peace? It is impossible! ...My Lords, any state is better than despair. Let us at least make one effort; and if we must fall, let us fall like men!"

IC - Tengu: The agent leaned his head back slightly, avoiding the spittle that flew from the Russian's mouth. Unfortunately, it was not enough to prevent his lenses from being splashed. "As I said, the government will be taking a more intimate approach to the mutant issue. No more arms-length politicking." Oyama removed his glasses and a cloth from his pocket, wiping them clean. "The Brotherhood killed 87 politicians in the New York bombing. Forty of the protesters are in ICU after that helicopter took a dive into the ground. Thirteen orphans from the Harmony House group home lost their lives at the center of the blast. Twenty foreign diplomats have been permanently scarred from the attack. Pietro Maximoff declared war on these United States of America, on the world, and tried to hide his army of terrorists in a relic of his father's strong-arming days.""Just like Al Qaeda before them, the Brotherhood will be punished for their terrorism. Unless, you somehow think that Pietro deserved less?" Tommy popped his glasses back on.

"Pietro was an American citizen. He had rights that deserved to be followed through with. Different strokes for different folks, ri--"

The TV flickered on then, and the change from slight surprise to shock to hatred to loathing to hatred again was clearly visible on Aleksandr's face; he turned back to the government mook and drew his Magnum, the laser sight clicking on and hovering right over one lens of Oyama's stupid sunglasses. The look on the man's face was something else: on one hand, here was a man who was barely a legal adult - and wasn't an American citizen - holding a gun to an agent of the United States government. On the other, Aleks was dangerous, and what's more, he was peeved. He could easily take the guy in combat with the amount of recuperation he'd done since the Vegas debacle, even with a slightly dinged shoulder; it was also very clear from the way the guy had conducted himself that everyone in the room would sign an affidavit saying that Aleks' hand had slipped upwards and shot him.

"Belikov," Alex Smith said lazily in a No. Stop. Don't monotone, as though he were more worried about the state of the Institute doors after being soaked with blood than the man's safety. Aleks didn't budge, though it was clear he probably wasn't about to shoot.

"Out. Don't try and fight me. Get out."

Ic: Annie's instinctive reaction was to throw Alaric's arm off and step away from him, but as her brother's arm closed in around her she decided that this time, this arm, was different. Though still a relative stranger to her this was still her sibling. She had decided to put aside her misgivings about him aside and be loved. It was, after all, an emotion she never truly felt before.

They stepped through the breezeway and the twin sliding doors automatically spread open and threw warm air at them as they walked through and into the lobby. The bored concierge behind the counter put on his best face after working all the hours he had and Alaric was quick to select a room and pay.

"Is there any food nearby?" Annie asked.

"The Grill only serves breakfast, but there are a number of delivery places in the area that we can take to your room," the concierge offered.

"Is there a Wendy's nearby?" she asked pointedly.

"Yes, there--"

"Kay, whatever," she said and turned away, mumbling something about being hungry enough to eat three Baconators.

"Will there be any luggage?"

"No," Alaric replied.

"Okay then, here is your key. You're in room 204. If you need anything else during the night, room serv--"

"Bye," Annie said as she waved Alaric to follow and stomped off towards the stairs, her leather-soled boots knocking on the tile floor loudly.

"Husband and wife?" the concierge asked Alaric with a smile.

OOC: That....

....There aren't even words to describe how screwed up the X-Men are. No words.

None.

Doomed sums up their fate now, but no words can describe how they reached it.

IC (Yuri)

“Let Genosha be a lesson to terrorists everywhere. Defy the law, harm our citizens, and you have just forfeited your right to exist. We will visit disaster upon you, as you have visited it upon us. How many innocents did the Brotherhood kill? Hundreds? Thousands?  You…” He gestured to the reporters. “Of all people should know. They made a habit of hijacking news rooms and killing everyone within them….and yet many mutants sympathize with them. Openly sympathize with known terrorists and serial killers. That, my friends, is the reason MACE must exist, so long as such massive disrespect for human life exists….MACE will be there. A line of steel and fiery hearts, protecting defenseless from those who would harm them for their own twisted ideology….”

OOC:

"The disproportional response! Let the word ring forth, from this time and this place, gentlemen, you kill an American, any American, we don't come back with a proportional response. We come back with total disaster!"

— President Jed Bartlet, The West Wing.

OOC: Aleksandr isn't an X-Man regardless, but whatever floats your boat.

Regardless, not really sure when you get the authority to make the leap from "we run a joint taskforce" to "we get to decide mutant policy in this game on a whim." So while we're going down the list of things that are a bit not kosher...

Oyama eyed the gun aimed at his face. "I would suggest you put away your gun before you get yourself hurt." "Threatening a federal employee in the course of their work is a Class D felony in the criminal code. Then again, as you are a foreigner, it could very well end up being treated as a terrorist threat. An indefinite vacation in Cuba.""Don't be a идиот. OOC: There's a huge difference between IC faction stuff - which, by the way, isn't nearly as big a deal because things like this happen in various RPGs all the time - and asserting authority you legally don't have OOC. There are chains of command to go through, and you don't control any of them. Even if you do control a General.

Ic: Annie Worthington breathed deeply on the bed before coming to a conclusion. "That's it. I need to eat." She propped herself up and sat on the foot of the bed. "I think..." she patted her leather jacket and finally found her wallet, fished it out and found a few fives in it. It was all she had, thirty-one dollars in cash, a stark comparison to Alaric's likely millions, but she wasn't going to be groveling at Ric's knees for money to feed herself. Annie was as tough as the streets she learned to tame and she knew the rule was you pay for yourself, find your own way, take no debts; doing so would only quicken your doom. She was still proud of herself and the fact that she came this far long, there was no way she would change now.

"I'll grab something for you if you pay me back," she offered.

"Yeah, sure. You getting a Baconator?" Alaric asked.

"Probably a couple at least."

"I'll have the same, then," Alaric said.

"Deal," Annie said. Without waiting another beat she left the room and disappeared down the hallway. She stormed down the stairs, fled into the lobby, ignored the concierge's creepy smile and went outside, then turned around a corner. Once assured nobody was around she took her jacket off, tied it around her waist and let her wings open up and flex before jumping up and taking flight into the nighttime sky in search of the Wendy's.

IC Morning StarMeanwhile, Morning Star was still circling the mansion. If it was in his programming to be bored, he'd be bored to death right now. But it wasn't, so he just kept on walking around the mansion. Passing by the front door, he noticed some dude-"NOT IDENTIFIED AS AMERICAN CITIZEN" flashed on his HUD-holding a gun to Tengu, but the latter seemed to have it under control. Oh well.

"We tried, Adrian. Didn't work. But since you asked..."

The gun dropped a couple inches, to Oyama's heart. Aleks' face and his resolve didn't change; suddenly, it wasn't so certain that he wouldn't shoot if pressed to. His chocolate brown eyes showed only determination and anger at the mistreatment and bigotry that had swallowed this entire country whole. The steadiness of his hand, like that of a sniper's as he carried the gun showed he was willing to do something about it.

"Let's pretend we're being civil. You've got no warrant, no headmaster to speak to at the moment, and no First Daughter. And you're still standing there. You'd still be standing here if I didn't have a gun to your chest. Why?"

IC:

Alaric leaned back on the bed and took off his blazer and button-up, lounging in a simple v-neck on the bed with his hand already to his wallet. Too late, he wondered whether Annie would spring for two things of fries and Chocolate Frosty's but he eventually decided that she had the cash to spend and that if worst came to worst, he'd still have a couple cheeseburgers and he could make a run at 1 A.M. anyway. In the meantime, he kicked back on the bed and casually slid his wallet back into his pocket, laying back and forming shapes out of the speckled dots of the ceiling. Idly he thought to look for the remote; the impulse was quickly overridden by the knowledge that his sister would be back soon and that he didn't have long to wait.

And as it turns out, he really didn't. A brief swish and a click of the door signaled that Annie had arrived, and she carried herself in with two huge bags in one hand and two large Chocolate Frostys in the other. She tossed one bag to Ric, and he opened it to see three Baconators complete with a large order of fries and the little dip-or-squeeze ketchup packets. A spoon was included for the Frosty, which Annie set aside on the dresser for him. Alaric's stomach rawred again, and he grinned to himself, looking up at Annie.

"How much?"

"29.20," she replied simply. Alaric reached into his pocket again, grabbing his wallet and giving her three ten's. It wasn't like 80 cents was gonna break his bank.

Guns.

Now this has gotten out of hand. As Alek's gun arm was pushed aside, he would feel a hand clamp around his wrist, preventing him from rounding on the MACE agent again. The grip was surprisingly strong, especially when he looked back, and saw that the one restraining him was Tera.

"Let's calm down. Ranting against authority? Sure. Pointing a gun at them? That I'm a lot less okay with."

Ic: Things were much easier and quicker when one could fly. Annie sometimes wondered if the sense of freedom given when there were no mundane restraints was the exhilarating drug that made her father the complete dick he turned out to be, but whenever she thought on this she deduced that it was too dangerous to try. Becoming like her father was her utmost phobia, so when she flew she payed little attention to the pleasing aspect of it and instead focused on other things. Tonight that was easier to do. Like a great hawk on the hunt for fleeting rodent morsels she was scanning for a more pleasing fast food.

Once she found the place she was in and out in little time, a benefit she wouldn't have taken if it weren't for no line. Retracing her flight path she quickly found the hotel, stomped past the concierge (who was very surprised she returned so quickly) and nearly ran the rest of the way to her room. She was so eager to finally eat that she almost dropped a bag while slipping the key in the slot. As soon as the door was ajar she kicked it and bolted inside.

She tossed one of the big white bags at Alaric and slid a Frosty and a spoon on the counter.

"How much?"

"Twnty-nine eighty," she said as she plopped into the armchair and kicked her feet up on the desk and pulled the first burger out of her bag. Normally she would only take the payment she was due -- $14.70, otherwise rounded to $15 -- but she was so engrossed in the food that she absentmindedly took the whole set of cash her brother handed her and slipped it in her wallet with a one-handed trick. She peeled the paper wrapping apart and instantly attacked the sandwich with ravenous intensity. It wasn't long before the rustle of more paper signaled her moving on to the second one.

IC:

On any given weeknight, Aleksandr Belikov - always a creature of habit - would finish dismantling and reassembling the remote control in his room at around 2:30 in the morning, lay back, and reminisce about the first time he killed a cop. He would close his eyes in Westchester, New York, and then he'd open his eyes, and he was thirteen again. He would clutch the remote a little bit tighter, and suddenly it would morph into a Makarov pistol, and he went from nineteen to thirteen in the blink of an eye...

Murmansk, Russia. 2006.

In another lifetime, in another part of the world - even another part of Russia - he could have been a dancer or a gymnast, no matter how fruity that sounded. From balcony to balcony, patio to patio, across fire escapes and low-hanging gutters and alleyways, Aleks leaped and twirled and traveled without ever needing to touch the ground. All the apartment buildings conformed, with not a brick out of place; to the young mind of the future mercenary it was as though even the paint of each building chipped in the same way, as though the bricks eroded and the windows broke and the tenants slipped away into oblivion all at once. When something happened in one apartment, could it be felt in all the others? Aleks didn't think he'd ever know; he'd only just recently managed to commit to memory which apartment building was his. Oftentimes he would bring in stolen food for himself and his mother into the wrong apartment, and he'd be forced to kick down doors, leap down stairs, run through people's legs or even knock them out sometimes. With experiences like that, why would he want to get to know the other buildings?

Aleksandr, bread and milk still hanging from a gym bag on his back, landed hard on a fire escape ladder and slid down; his feet touched on tiptoes lightly against the balcony as he clambered through the window, calling out his mom first by her name, then by moniker. Katerina Belikov didn't answer; the entire room of the apartment he had crawled into was quiet. For a second he was sure this was the wrong apartment, but how could it be wrong? The furniture, as minimalist as the poor family could afford, was all arranged as orderly as possible in the same manner his mother had kept it. Though Murmansk was frigid by nature, this apartment had the light warmth of home, a warmth that caressed the skin and soothed the soul. Unless this room was truly the greatest of facades, an architectural chameleon unlike any other, it was definitely his apartment. But where was Katerina?

There was no familiar soft, murmured "Aleksei." No rustle of his mother emerging from the paper-thin covers that coated her weak, second-rate mattress. Only...sobs? Yes, sobs; they were light, but they were obviously there. To survive as long as he had, Aleks had learned the finer points of breaking and entering, and he had tuned his ears to the point where a single footstep or yawn meant that his entire operation could be blown. And he heard sobs. Then Aleks realized that something was out of place: a cop's uniform was balled up and casually flung underneath the Belikov's sorry excuse for a coffee table.

Oh, no.

He bent down to examine the uniform and could see it had been taken off in a hurry: the dress shirt was rustled as though it had been more ripped off than removed carefully, and the pants were still zipped and buttoned. A Magnum pistol was buried under the cop's cap; Aleksandr took it quickly, as though afraid that someone would pop out looking for their uniform almost naked and chase after him for the gun. He couldn't help it: the thought made his thirteen year old mind giggle loudly before he could stop himself. The sobs stopped; there was a loud thud from the bedroom. Aleks ducked behind the couch, breathing heavily and thinking small, trying to avoid the gazes of anyone coming. There were sounds of footfall, too heavy to be his mothers; the sobs resumed, but now they were quieter. More fearful, juxtaposed against pained. Aleks' hand gripped tight around the gun, and almost in answer the door creaked open and he jumped.

He would never forget what he saw for the rest of his probably-shorter-than-average life: the cop, standing like Caesar with a stained bedsheet wrapped around him like a toga. Behind him, over his shoulder and under his arm, he got a bifurcated view of Katerina, sobbing to herself, tired, thin, and beautiful, with a crown of blood around her hairline and face, a sheet wrapped around her to preserve an ounce of decency. The cop started forward; Aleks, already in tears, raised the gun and fired once before the man could even leave the doorframe. Time stopped: Katerina's eyes widened in the same way the cop's did. Aleks couldn't help it; he fired again, then again, just to put the guy down. His chest was about as bloody as Katerina's face now; the pools of crimson red overlapped and melded over four bullet holes through his pectorals and side. The entry wounds were smaller than Aleksandr would have expected them to be, but they still got the job done. The cop's eyes went opaque, and he stumbled backwards as though he'd been hit in the chest with a towel, slamming the back of his head against the wooden bedpost as he did so.

Aleks' tears were really falling now as he looked at the cop, looked at the gun, looked at the gun, muttered that please now this couldn't happen, he didn't want this to happen, was the cop going to be okay, were things going to be okay. Katerina looked up, her eyes now just as unreadable and glassy as those of the dirty cop's, and she nodded and said, "Yes, Aleksei."

"Everything's going to be alright."

"I promise."

The gun dropped into Aleks' waistband again, and he fell backwards slightly into Tera's slightly surprised grip. She turned the Russian around to look at her and her eyes widened in shock: he had the gaze of a dead man, cold and lazy, unable to register feeling on any sort of level. It was likely he'd had some sort of humanity disconnect, the kind that he used to switch on when he worked for Weapon-X, but it was different now. He was a shell, and as Tera whispered questions, muttered a question that was something along the lines of, "Are you going to be okay?"

His heart was pumping a hundred miles an hour. He could feel a buzzing in his ears as the mook introduced himself to Tali.

"Everything's going to be alright," he muttered, and then he felt a pain in his shoulder like the hounds of heII itself gnawing on his body, and he slipped away into unconsciousness.

IC:

What the....?

As the Russian began to fall she readjusted her grip, bracing one hand on either side of his rib cage, just under the shoulders, to prevent him from falling. With all consciousness fled, he was just so much dead weight. Once she made sure he wasn't going to drop, she carefully picked him up, balancing him on one shoulder.

Where's the infirmary... Her footsteps carried her down the hall to the old nurses office, back when it actually had an occupant. Tera pushed open the door with her foot, she flipped on the light and set Aleks down on the bed.

"There's gotta be some smelling salts or something somewhere..." She said to herself, using one hand to check his pulse and make sure he was breathing correctly.

IC:"I swear, it's like this stuff hasn't been touched in years. What kind of excuse for a nurse worked in here?" Tera muttered, rummaging through the cabinets. Most of the items were coated in dust, as whoever used to work there hadn't ever bothered to use them Finally, she came across what she was looking for.

"Assuming that what caused this incident isn't brain damage, or blood flow issues, this should do the trick." Uncapping the package, she held the salts under Aleks' nose.

IC: A series of thuds denoted Tyrone coming down the stairs. Not because he was particularly bulky at the moment, the extended muscle power he'd gained in Vegas having worn off ages ago, but because he was taking them two at a time.

"There some sort of problem?"

IC: With the guards under her control it was easy for Song to get out the building.

"Do whatever you want with..." she waved a hand dismissively at the body, "...this. I intend to go to the meeting point early, make sure there are no unpleasant surprises waiting for us when we get there."

IC: Before Leech could answer Lightning, there was an almighty rumbling as Rhino hared off in a direction he'd apparently picked at random.

"Where the devil is he going?" Leech asked, "He was supposed to be the one breaking down doors for us!" He shook his head to get it back in the game, "Maximum security is ten floors down, closer to the roots of the tree. Find the elevators and secure them all! We take just one they'll know how to sabotage us!"

I am Ultron Six, a cybernetic intelligence created by Doctor Henry Pym. My imperative is to bring peace and order to this world. I am about to fulfil that imperative; for the extinction of humanity…begins now.

the_ultron_imperative.jpg

Soon the earth will no longer be habitable for any biological organism: Man, woman, child, plant, animal, fungus or bacterium. All life will cease to exist. This is not a threat, there is nothing you can do to stop it. The process has already begun. I receive no pleasure in this, it is simply the only solution. There must be peace and order, the end of life on earth will ensure that. Goodbye.

IC: While Adrian was unused to being brushed off, it didn't bother him much. In all honesty, his point had been stopping Aleks from shooting the government official, and that happened, though not entirely in the way Adrian had expected. When Aleks dropped, Adrian followed along behind Tera, simply to ensure Aleks was alright. It had been his intent to step in to help, but the young woman was frighteningly efficient, and they were at the nurse's office before he had a chance to even offer. Adrian decided things would likely be better if he simply stood back and let her do what she was doing.
