Bootleg Bionicles!

Timelady Gallade

Recommended Posts

They get away with it because every time something is made, there will be somebody who makes a bootleg version, whether it be toys, games, devices, etc. LEGO isn't going to worry about every single one because it is too much of a hassle when it doesn't cause them much harm as is.

They probably just decapitated a few hundred Star Wars action figures and made some poor underpaid workers in a sweatshop in China carve a technic axle hole in them, all just to dodge a few legal battles.

"No, bootleg....... I am your father.....""NOOOOO!"

:P

All joking aside, years ago I saw a bootleg as one of those toys you see attached to t-shirts, mainly at JCPenny's. It was a fake Onewa Hordika. Bright orange, with one Onewa Hordika weapon, one Nokoma Hordika weapon, one Matau Hordika weapon, and one Vakama Hordika weapon. The axle holes at the top of the hand pieces were chopped off so the weapons could snap in and out.

From the few reviews I've seen, any bootlegs which use parts which are exact copies of real Bionicle parts would be compatible to an extent, but the plastic quality is lower and more prone to breakage/deformation.The ones that use only original part designs, on the other hand, typically are not compatible from what I've read.

It is still a knockoff product, since it used LEGO's ball and socket patent without permission. At least they used original molds.

There is a stand at the mall I go to that sells those illegal bootleg Lego sets.

In America? That's interesting actually.

Yeah, here in San Francisco, California they sell bootlegs. I haven't actually checked them out, but you can expect some pictures in a couple weeks.

I went there today and they had mysteriously vanished....

Either that or business wasn't good enough and they closed. Also if it was a kiosk at a mall, they very well could have been closed that day, since they can choose which days they are open and which days they aren't.

So, this was recently posted in a group discussion on another site...

The story is that I found in the local market some HF 1.0 and 2.0 figures, which were Chinese copies under a different brand and series name. Some 2.0 figures were nearly the same as the originals, but some differences occured, like Evo had a blue hand and instead of Nex there was a 2.0 Bulk (Whaaat? Rare parts right there.)I bought the only 1.0 figure I found: Surge, or in this case his name was "Fighter". He had some color differences, but most notably his mask was RED. A red Surge mask... that's like one of the rarest pieces around west, so I am a little excited about this.

WANT.

Relevant to my above post, Monarth GS posted a mini-review of those rip-off sets. Interesting stuff; I'd sure like to get my hands on a red Breez or Surge helmet. This makes me wonder if the rest of the rip-offs in the line have similarly recolored helmets...

Other interesting things in the sets are solid-color Glatorian heads and 1.0 Hero Cores (red and yellow) and solid-colored weapons (Surge's lightning swords and Breez's boomerangs, all totally silver).

Oh, and the rip-off brand has a fantastic slogan. Earth Warrior. The war for the space.

Whoever made these must not have a lot of common sense. I don't see how anyone(especially us Bionicle fans :D) could be fooled by these, unless they never seen one before(but you probably could tell its fake).

You'd be surprised. People are easily misled if something is close enough to the actual thing. In this case, nearly every knockoff LEGO set I've seen is made to look so much like the actual thing, people actually buy it under the impression it is legitimate. On the other hand, there are always the people who buy them because "Hey, fake LEGO. Let's check it out."

They're not aimed at people who are already knowledgable fans of Bionicle. They're aimed at people who want that sort of toy but aren't aware of the real deal, or unwitting parents or grandparents who can't tell the difference or care more about price than authenticity. Keep in mind that these can be produced much cheaper than Bionicle sets, because the producers don't have to be as stringent about quality, and they don't always have to pay anyone to design the sets or parts since they often just steal those designs from actual Bionicle sets. And in some cases, particularly in countries where Lego has a hard time keeping their own products on the market and these bootlegs off the market, these knockoffs are going to be more prevalent and accessible than actual Bionicle sets would be.

Yes, well if you tell someone to but you a Bionicle set, they would look for the word "Bionicle". And I said fooled by these, not people who are willing to buy fake Lego.

Am I the only one who finds the bootleg's names hilarious? Maskers? Invincibility Robot? Max Warrior? You would think they could think of better ones.
Half these people don't speak fluent English so the translated name ends up weird.
Actually, I find it funny too. But if the translated name turns out weird, then they probably used Google translate. They have the worst translations ever.

And therein lies the reason these are purchased, for those who were wondering. For a dedicated Bionicle fan, the only reason these would probably be bought is for curiosity's sake. But what about someone who isn't a dedicated fan? "Hey, that's that thing my friend/brother/grandchild plays with/told me about! The buildable robot toy! Hey, that doesn't cost much at all! I should get this for me/them!"
