Chapter 1 - Tahu [Rude Awakening]

2,000 years after The Sealing...Everything shook violently. This wasn't the first time that the Toa had awoken from a long, dreamless sleep and found himself somewhere he didn’t recognise. And somehow, he doubted it would be the last. But this time, this time it was different. As Tahu slowly regained feeling in his body he realised that he was standing upright. However, any attempts to move were in vain. He was trapped in some kind of crystallised substance. The material encompassed his body like a cocoon and held him firmly in place. The Toa strained every muscle in his bio-mechanical body in an attempt to break free of his prison, but to no avail. As he did so, though, his body begun to rise drastically in temperature, heating up the crystal that surrounded him until it glowed a brilliant orange. After a few seconds cracks started to spread and the entire structure crumbled around Tahu.

That's right. Tahu thought, I'm a Toa of Fire, How had he not remembered that? That was when it hit him, he couldn't remember anything past his own name.

Dazed, he paced around the small, rocky cave he found himself in. He felt different too, but different to what? He didn’t even remember what his body had felt like before, he just knew in his gut that it felt different now. Tahu started looking for a way out when something caught his eye, a large red gem sat upon a small pillar in one corner of the cave. It glowed brightly, bright enough to illuminate the entire cave, casting an eerie crimson hue over the stone walls; the Toa couldn’t believe he hadn’t noticed it right away. Slowly and apprehensively, the bewildered Tahu began moving towards the gem, he reached out a metal hand and touched it. As soon he made contact hundreds of images flashed before his eyes, filling his mind with memories.

Yes! He remembered everything! How he and five others had washed ashore on the island of Mata Nui, how they had fought the evil that plagued it and protected its inhabitants. Then he remembered how the evil Makuta had managed to take over the entire universe, how the great spirit Mata Nui, the previous ruler had fought to regain his rightful place. Until Mata Nui found a way to win the losing battle against his enemy and fulfil their duty to fuse the planets Aqua Magna, Bara Magna and Bota Magna and recreate Spherus Magna. He managed to combine the two robots they possessed into one ultimate robot which still housed the Matoran Universe, but at a sacrifice, the fusion destroyed the spirits of Makuta and Mata Nui. Tren Krom took up what he felt was a chance for him to fix the universe that was corrupt in his eyes. However, he found it wasn’t as easy as it looked, and after using the robot to create Spherus Magna he shut off most of the body. But he kept the head and Metru Nui alive, thinking it was the only pure place in the universe. He went into a deep slumber, putting Tahu and the other Toa Nuva in cages created from a mix of Energized Protodermis, Hordika Venom and other substances including what created the Bohrok-Kal. The prisons were specifically engineered by micing the chemicals to create a new one that would maintain the Toa in suspended animation as well as boost their strength over time. He told the Matoran to awaken them if evil was to ever creep back into their isolated city.

The time has come, thought Tahu. The Matoran have somehow awakened me, I am needed once again! Excitedly, the Toa struggled to remember where the hidden exit was. He pushed hard against one of the walls of the cave, the false wall slid back, and then to the left causing dusky sunlight to flood the cave. The light burnt Tahu’s eyes, blinding him momentarily. He listened out for the cheering Matoran, welcoming him back and asking for his help. But he heard only silence. He was standing on a small ledge on the side of a giant volcano, a few miles from Ta-Metru. The land around was red and scorched and the sky was thick with smoke. In the sunlight he could see himself better, he looked down and what he saw shocked him, he looked nothing like he used to thanks to spending so long in that cage consisting of so many mutating substances. He was taller than he once was and darker in colour, his hands and feet were clawed and when he felt his mask he realised it had been completely fused to his face. His Fire Sword had grown and now needed two hands to use, it had become a Fire Greatsword. Tahu wondered for a second how he would get down - there were no steps of any kind and it was a long fall."Fall." Came a hushed voice that Tahu didn't recognise. It was carried on a huge gust of wind that seemed to come from nowhere. The gust knocked the Toa hard in the back and he tumbled off the ledge and into empty space. Tahu panicked as he fell helpless.

“Who was that? Help!” He cried, the ground coming ever closer “I need help! Somebody, anybody!”

Chapter 2 - Tahu [Ta-Metru]

All of a sudden Tahu's plummet halted mere seconds before he hit the ground. His body hung limply in the warm air for a few seconds.

"Thank you..." he said, somewhat trepid. But there was no reply. Everything was quiet. Whoever had spoken before was nowhere to be seen, and he saw no sign of his saviour. So how was he levitation? Was it his own doing?

It must be me! Thought Tahu, nobody else is around, but how? I cannot fly. Or at least I couldn't before. All those mutagens in the prison, could they have given me new powers? He concentrated on the ground below and found himself being lowered down slowly until his feet touched the rocky earth, sending small clouds of dust whirling through the thick air. Confused, Tahu ran his hands down his back and was intrigued by what he felt. It seemed he had spawned multiple heat vents on his back. As if flexing a muscle he had never had before, Tahu concentrated his energy on the vents and a torrent of warm air errupted from them, pushing him into the air once more. This is great! He thought to himself as he rose higher and higher, soaring up past the cave's entrance and even higher until he could was above even the volcano. From up here he could see the lay of the lands, Ta-Metru was nowhere to be found. Instead the landscape reminded him more of the island Mata Nui that he had arrived on all those millenia ago. Using his new-found power of flight, Tahu rocketed across the land until finally a handful tall red buildings sprung out of the horizon. But as he approached the city, the Toa's heart sank. Ta-Metru was barely recognisable. Where once a great city stood, there was now nothing but rubble, most of the towers had fallen and houses had been razed. At first Tahu saw no signs of life as he surveyed the destroyed city, a few Matoran corpses lay sprawled out on the streets.

Dead Matoran. In Metru Nui? How could this be, was I awoken too late? Other than that, nothing stirred, until he noticed one lone figure slowly skulking through the rubble. Tahu flew closer to the being, wondering what they were doing here all alone, and the closer he got the more he recognised who it was. His armour was trashed and he seemed to move with a limp, but it was most definitely him.

“Axonn!” roared Tahu as he swooped down to greet his old friend. But what had meant to sound gleeful came out harsh and the outburst startled Axonn. He instinctively leaped away from the intruder, hurling a large blast of pure, fire-like energy in his direction. The blast struck Tahu square on in the chest, knocking him out of the air. He hit the ground with a dull thud, and by the time he had scrambled to his feet Axonn was standing over him, glaring down on him with old, weary eyes, his mask was chipped and covered in thin hairline cracks.

”Friend, it’s me! Toa Tahu!” Groaned the Toa as he clutched his side in pain. For a moment Axonn continued to glare, until his mask began giving off a soft glow. The ancient being’s facial expression suddenly morphed into something resembling a weary smile. It seemed to Tahu that he had gone so long without expressing joy he had almost forgotten how to.

“T… T… Tahu? It’s really you! Where have you been?” Mumbled Axonn, placing a huge hand on Tahu's shoulder.

“I have only just awoken from my slumber, what has happened to my city?” Exclaimed the Toa, waving his arms at the ruins surrounding them, and with that Axonn’s smile vanished as quickly as it came. Sadness filled his eyes, he took two steps back and sat himself down on a fallen pillar which crumbled slightly under his weight.

“Tahu, there is so much you must know, so much has happened. All this is the work of brothers on brothers, an attack from the Onu and Po-Matoran. They destroyed everything and killed most of the Matoran, those lucky enough to flee or fight to safety now barely survive in tribes across Ta-Metru. It used to be far worse here but I have been working hard to rejuvenate this place to its former glory, I filled all of the tunnels they used to ambush the city with and have buried most of the fallen. I sent out messages to the leaders of the tribes, telling them of my plans to heal the city and make it how it used to be, soon I know they shall return and lend their aid but until then, I am doing the best I can on my own.”

“That’s very noble of you, but please, I must know how this all happened, why would the Onu-Matoran and Po-Matoran attack their friends? Is that why we have been awoken?”

“Sit, Tahu, for the tale I am about to tell you is most certainly not a joyous one.” Tahu looked around for something to sit on but gave up when he couldn't find anything and decided to sit on the dusty, smashed paving stones that were once a street beneath him. Axonn got up and disappeared behind the rubble for a few seconds, before returning with his gargantuan axe. He examined it as he spoke, running his fingers up and down the blade and twisting the hilt in his hand. He spoke quickly as he recalled the events that had led up to the destruction of Ta-Metru in as much detail as possible for he knew neither of them had much time to waste.

Chapter 3 - Takut [Tren Krom]

1 year before The Sealing...

Vakama was sat in a large throne in The Coliseum. To either side of him were the other Turaga, each sitting quietly in their own thrones. In front of them stood 51 Toa and many members of the 'Order of Mata Nui', most of which were yelling angrily, but not at each other. If anybody had been observing the scene they would assume everyone had gone insane for it would appear that they were protesting to air. But Takut knew that was not true, because he could hear the voice too.

Takut was amongst the silent minority, the same could not be said for certain members of his team. Virsero, the Toa Makli of Plant-life was among one of the loudest voices in the room in seemed. Takut decided to let them rant and scream until they were blue in the Kanohi, he knew it would not change anything.

“This is ridiculous!” cried Helryx, a well-respected Toa of Water,

“I refuse to do it, I am a Toa! My duty is to protect the Matoran, not to clean. It was your idea to try and purge the Universe, if you can’t handle it then that’s your problem!”A shrill laugh echoed through the minds of all present.

You think I’m requesting this?” Came the now familiar voice of Tren Krom.

You have no choice in the matter. I control your Universe. I am your Universe. How do you expect to defy the Universe itself?” Takut didn't like the turn of events any more than the rest, but Tren Krom was right, of course. Takut didn't know the exact extent of Tren Krom's powers as he controlled the Universe, but he did not doubt that they were immense.

“And where are the Toa Nuva for this? Or Takanuva? Why aren't you forcing them to do your dirty work along with the rest of us?" Asked Toa Gaaki who seemed notably calmer than the rest.

I have already told you this. The Toa Nuva, Takanuva, Brutaka, Axonn and Turaga Vakama shall be staying here to watch over Metru Nui. Nobody else may stay, it will take all of you to rid this universe of all its imperfections, and that includes the Turaga. I'm sure you understand that not all evil can be destroyed with brute force, your wisdom and guidance will be of great aid reshaping many civilisations. But now I grow tired of this encounter. You all know what must happen, go now and prepare.”

There was a huge bustle as everyone in the Coliseum stormed out. They had no choice but to accept their fates. Only Turaga Vakama remained. Takut motioned for his team to wait for him as he approached the wise, old Turaga. Since making the trip from Makli Nui to Metru Nui, Takut had become good friends with Vakama and the look in his eyes perfectly matched how the Toa of Plasma felt. "We don't stand a chance out there, do we?"

The Turaga didn't answer immediately. His eyes were fixed on the stone floor and his hands grasped his staff tightly. After what seemed like hours, he finally turned his eyes up and met Takut's gaze.

"He's... a monster." The Turaga muttered. "How could he force this upon you all.

"That was all the answer Takut needed, he turned and went to leave Vakama alone when his mind was invaded by the disgusting voice of Tren Krom.

"You blame me for this, Turaga?" the voice erupted into their heads, unwelcome. "Toa and Turaga were ordered to keep the Matoran Universe in order, and you failed. Outside of Metru Nui is a cesspit of corruption and evil. You know this is the only way to cleanse it once and for all."

Takut didn't reply, he continued outside and joined the rest of his Toa team. They were leaving tomorrow on the hardest task they had ever been given whether they liked it or not.

Chapter 4 - Takut [Toa Makli]

8 months before The Sealing...

"That's the last of them." Growled Toa Dona as she pulled her spear from the eye of the fallen Skakdi.

"It's never the last of them," Virsero sighed. "You should know that buy now."

Virsero sprinkled small, green seeds on the wounds of his allies. The seeds blossomed and healed the dented armour and broken tissue. Takut was the leader of the Toa Makli, and once he would have calmed his brother and sister. But the past four months had damaged them in ways they didn't think possible. The team had lost most of its members to the enemies, ever present. But what was worse, was that they had lost themselves. The world outside of Metru Nui was a dangerous place. All sorts of evil had taken root, and survival was a constant struggle. Everything the Toa had once held dear to them had been stripped by desperation. Each of them had been forced to end lives, going against the Toa Code.

But in the grand scheme, they were lucky. At the beginning there had been over fifty Toa in their respective teams. They had seen whole teams fall in battle, be separated or turn against each other. Hathor, a Toa of Earth was originally from another team, but the Makli had taken him in after his brothers and sisters fell.

"Tren Krom was right about one thing." He grumbled, "This whole universe is doomed."

"And these constant storms have become unbearable." Hathor complained as lightning cracked nearby.

"Tren Krom is struggling, Sun Toa." The team had met Turaga Nokama a couple of weeks ago, and she had stayed with them ever since. Takut was amazed by her wisdom, and the fact that she almost seemed more capable of survival than the rest of them. "His purpose to only have temporary control over the Universe before Mata Nui took his true place. He was never given the power to control the whole Universe for this extended period of time. I'm not sure how much longer he can hold."

"What does that mean for us?" Takut asked. What happens to a world when the man in control loses that control? There was no one else who could take his place.

Nokama did not have a chance to answer, suddenly the ground opened beneath them. An explosion sent them sprawling across the rocky landscape. Four slender, red skinned beings with huge claws for hands had been the source of the attack. The Toa had heard stories that anyone who was peaceful and civilised was being allowed into Metru Nui to live with the Matoran. That just left the violent, savage ones out here for the Toa.

Their time to rest was over before it started as the Toa fought back against their assailants. The Toa were strong, but the enemies were fast. Takut managed to melt a hole in the chest of one using his Plasma power, but a second was behind him before he could react. A claw smashed into his back, knocking him off his feet. A pillar of earth swallowed the attacker before he could land a finishing blow.

Takut turned to thank Hathor, but a wordless cry left his mouth. The two remaining beings were on the Toa of Earth, their claws tore at metal armor. Vines shot from Virsero's hand and bound the smallest in place, but the taller of the two could not be held so easily. He dropped the limp body of Hathor and bounded towards them. Sparks lit up the battlefield as its claws met Takut's swords. The two parried, slashed and dodged in a close fight. Takut ducked under a claw that nearly took his head off, and his opponent twisted away from a slash of his sword. Takut only got the upper hand when Nokama buried her trident into the back of the being's knee, crippling it.

Takut beheaded the enemy, Dona and Virsero had finished off the other. As soon as the danger was cleared, the four of them ran over to Hathor. The Toa was gravely wounded, and neither Nokama nor Virsero's best efforts could help him. Takut never learnt the name of his team, or where he came from. But whatever it was, their last member was gone.

The chaos has claimed yet another victim. Thought Takut. When will this end? It must be soon.

Chapter 5 - Tahu [Axonn's Tale]

2,000 years after The Sealing...

Axonn caressed his axe and shifted on the fallen pillar he was sat upon, sending small fragments of rock tumbling towards the dusty ground. His eyes were closed searched far back in his mind for memories and attempted to piece them together. There was an eerie silence across the ruins of Ta-Metru before he opened his weary eyes and spoke.

“I remember watching you and the other Toa being imprisoned. I remember watching idly by as the seven chunks of that accursed crystalline concoction flew from the sky and lodged themselves into seven separate locations throughout Metru Nui. I remember how helpless I felt as I observed the seven remaining Toa step into the caves that the crystal prisons had created. I remember the flash of blinding light and I remember as the rock caved in around you, sealing you in indefinitely. The Matoran were blind to the obvious by the belief that their ‘Great Spirit’ would only do what was best for them, clearly unaware of how insane that vulgar creature was. But I knew it was mistake, I didn’t know it would be this awful, but I knew it was wrong. I could do nothing, you can't defy the Universe itself.

"At first after The Sealing, when Tren Krom shut Metru Nui off completely from the rest of the Matoran Universe, things were perfect. The Matoran no longer had to work in order to keep the universe running and there was no threat to them, they played and relaxed for years without a care in the world. But then, things began going downhill. The Matoran were created to work, it is their nature and without that they become nothing. Their behaviour deteriorated. Without any greater purpose the Matoran soon got bored of sitting around, they started riots and fights out of sheer boredom. It was not their fault, they did not want to, they were just left confused and lost without a set goal. That’s not all, Tren Krom must have used some kind of chemical to send himself into the coma which caused The Sealing because this chemical began to take it’s toll on everybody in Metru Nui, the Matoran began to get sluggish and lazy, not bothering to fix broken buildings, fallen bridges or crumbled walls. The whole island became a dump, streets where littered with trash and unattended fires in Ta-koro spread and burned whole districts before anybody could be bothered to put them out. This phase lasted decades, but it ended. The Matoran where certainly still less active or caring afterwards but they managed to clean most of the streets, and fix half of the damage.

"The second phase, however, didn’t end. The chemicals dulled the memories of all inhabitants, at first the effects were almost unnoticeable, somebody would forget a name or the time of an appointment, but then it got worse, much worse. In the worst cases, life-long friends became strangers because they could no longer remember each other, it was rare, but it happened. The most worrying effect of the memory loss, however was that the Matoran slowly but completely forgot about life before The Sealing. Nobody even remembered what a ‘Toa’ was, Turaga Vakama ruled the city but nobody could remember why, nobody knew what ‘Turaga’ meant either, even Vakama himself has forgotten his past. Eventually the elements began to mean less and less and the six parts of Metru Nui became their own individual cities, progressively less dependent on one another."Axonn fell back into silent for a few moments. Tahu could tell that recalling these rememories was not easy for him.

"A few years ago, a tyrant rose to power in Onu-Metru who somehow had control of elemental powers. The Matoran had forgotten about such things and so to them, he was some sort of magical deity. Unbeknownst to the rest of Metru-Nui, the Onu-Metruans were busy building an army under his command. Before long they had managed to create a secret alliance with Po-Metru and eventually, for seemingly no reason whatsoever, launched a full-scale attack on Ta-Metru.

"It was a calm day. As far as anyone knew nothing was wrong. Until suddenly they burst out of the ground from tunnels they dug all the way from the Onu-Metru catacombs. Armed Matoran swarmed the streets, attacking everyone in sight and razing the entire city to the ground. It was two cities against one, and Ta-Metru had let it’s defences slip, believing itself to be safe in the knowledge that there was no threat in Metru Nui. Many Matoran where slaughtered that day, but some survived, and soon they shall return and aid me in my efforts to rejuvenate this city.

"Each city responded to the attack differently. The Onu-Matoran and the Po-Matoran both moved into a giant underground cave city newly dug by the Onu-Matoran, with only two entrances, one in Onu-Metru and the other in Po-Metru. The cities themselves are now both largely uninhabited and only used as forts to defend the entrances. The Ko-Metruans decided that they didn’t want to be involved in any form of war, and so they encased the entire city of Ko-Metru within a thick ice casing with no way in and no way out. The Ga-Metruans submerged their city and are currently leading the defence against the Onu and Po-Matoran with a sizable military, and the Le-Matoran have retreated into the woods that have grown across half of Le-Metru since The Sealing, helping the Ga-Matoran combat the Onu and Po-Matoran when it suits their fancy. There have only been a few battles so far, but tension is brimming and I can feel war is just around the corner. ”

“That certainly is an awful story." Tahu said. It was clear that Axonn had said all he could. "I trust your word, but wish it was not true. I would stay and help you rebuild Ta-Metru, but I must reunite with my brethren.”

“Ah, yes, I suggest you search for them in their respective cities. But be warned, you will not like what you find.” Said Axonn, and then, without waiting for acknowledgement, he got up and climbed over some rubble to resume what he was doing before Tahu's arrival. He picked up a chunk of metal and hurled it on top of a huge pile, ready to be melted down. Tahu sat for a while and watched him. But not for long. He had to go and find the others in his team. Surely they had all been awoken at the same time as him. Excitement welled up inside the Toa as he looked forward to rejoining with Gali, Pohatu, Onua, Lewa and even Kopaka.Tahu pushed off the ground and soared into the skies once more using his newfound powers. Flying would never get old, and he felt a rush of adrenaline as the ground dropped away quickly. Brooding over what Axonn had said, Tahu decided he would visit Onua in Onu-Metru first. He couldn't believe Matoran would attack other Matoran, no matter what had happened.

The Toa steered in the direction of Onu-Metru, somewhat worried as to exactly what he'd find there.

Chapter 6 - Tahu [Onu-Metru]

Tahu felt the air lash at his face and heard it roar loudly in his ears as he soared through the air above Metru Nui. He could have sworn it was larger than he remembered, the island seemed to have grown. He had left Ta-Metru a while ago but had not yet reached Onu-Metru. Bare, rocky land stretched out beneath him. The Toa of Fire had planned to cut through the centre of the island to get to Onu-Metru, but something wasn't right. The Coliseum was nowhere insight, despite the fact that he should have passed it long ago.Tahu had come across a couple of the Ta-Metruan camps Axonn had mentioned. They both consisted of three or four makeshift tents and half a dozen Matoran sitting around a large fire. The Matoran would give him timid looks as he passed above, but he could see the burning strength of Ta-Metru deep in their eyes still. It pained Tahu deeply to see his Matoran in such a state, and he still struggled to grasp that it had been done by other Matoran. Tahu swore that he would find the tyrant of Onu-Metru and bring him to justice.Eventually he reached the centre of the island, it had taken him far longer than he had planned and he was now certain the island was bigger than before, a lot bigger.

In fact, the size and landscape reminded him more of the island of Mata Nui that he had once lived upon. But he was certainly still in Metru Nui.Tahu rocketed passed the Coliseum, it looked as grand as ever, and unlike the rest of the island it appeared surprisingly untouched. He considered paying a visit to Vakama who he was certain would be inside, but he was determined to reach Onu-Metru. He remembered what Axonn had said about it basically being a military hub but if Onua had recently woken up he may be able to catch him there. The flight to Onu-Metru from the Coliseum was half as long and before long he saw black towers rising above the horizon.

As he reached the front gates, Tahu was greeted by a loud piercing horn. He slowed down and dropped to the floor. Standing at the huge, reinforced black gates stood three Onu-Matoran. But they were not like any other Matoran the Toa had seen before. It seemed as though they had attempted to rebuild their mechanical parts to make themselves bigger and stronger, but had gone too far. The organic tissue that made up their muscles and joints was warped and stretched, it bulged in some areas and was non-existent in others. They stood a head taller than they should and looked almost awkward in their new bodies. As Tahu approached, one of the misshapen guards spoke up.

“Who are you and what do you want?” He said udely prodding his spear in the Toa’s direction.“I am Tahu, I am looking for my friend, a Toa.” Replied Tahu, who took a step towards the Matoran and put his hand on the handle of his own weapon in preparation for an attack. The guards did not attack, but they didn't concede and let him inside either. Instead they chuckled grimly. Tahu asked what was so funny, but they continued to laugh.

“You? You want to see the Toa?” Grunted the biggest of the guards, who hadn't seen the humour in it at all.

“Yes, yes I do, so he’s here? Can you take me to him?” Cried Tahu, getting excited at the thought of being reunited with his brother, Onua.“Nobody sees the Toa of Anarchy," growled the first guard. "Especially not some freakish Ta-Metruan,”

“I thought we cleared you all out? Guess we missed a few,” said the third guard venomously. “Now I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”

“The Toa of Anarchy?... No, I am looking for Onua, Toa of Earth, is he here?” Asked a baffled Tahu, Who is the ‘Toa of Anarchy’? he wondered, he had never heard such a name. And where is Onua? “I don’t know any Onua, but I do know that I just asked you to leave, and I shouldn't have to ask you twice!” Growled the guard as he jabbed Tahu in the chest with his spear.Tahu’s hand was still resting on the hilt of his sword, and at that point he instinctively swung it round so that it knocked the weapon from the Matoran’s hands. The spear clattered to the ground noisily. The other guards reacted instantly, surrounding Tahu with their spears held in front of them. The first guard quickly snatched his weapon back off the floor and joined them. All of Tahu's sides were blocked. Every side but up.

The Toa lifted up into the air and began to fly away, he could never fight Matoran. But before he could go far, a lasso hooked around his leg and pulled him back down to earth. He hit the dirt hard and used his fire to burn the rope away before scrambling to his feet. Two more Matoran had joined them, and Tahu realised he would have to fight them. He swung his sword, crashing it into the shield of one of a guard and knocking him over. He then summoned a wall of fire and sent it straight towards the others. They instantly found themselves engulfed in searing flames and were distracted trying to put them out. Tahu took this as his chance to escape finally.

He couldn't fight Matoran. Not now, not ever. It felt wrong. Tahu took off once more, this time he managed to get far away. He rocketed away from Onu-Metru without looking back. It was clear that he was having no luck there, perhaps he would have a better chance finding Gali in Ga-Metru.

Chapter 7 - Takut [The Outside]

1 day before The Sealing...

Takut leaned limply against a grey, dusty rock and surveyed his surroundings. This island was desolate, just like the rest. Nothing but death. Death. Death was something that Takut had become well acquainted with over the past year. More so than anyone should ever be. A year. A whole year. Had it really been that long?

Takut thought back to Metru Nui. The meeting in the Coliseum when the fate of him and everyone around him had been sealed. Once upon a time he had been a hero. He had lead a team who had defeated evil and protected the innocent. Once upon a time he had been a Toa. "The Sun Toa" they had called him. What was he now? He had gone against the Toa code, he had killed more than he dared count. As Takut thought back over everything that had happened in the past year, he couldn't help but remember his team. Ayla, Heruk, Jahl, Eahuuri and Virsero. His brothers and friends. All of whom he had lost in the never ending conflict. Like so many others. Turaga Nokama had vanished without a trace at some point along the way, most likely dead too. Only he remained. The ex-Toa hated Tren krom for what he had done. He had forced all of the Toa, but for the Toa Nuva, to venture out into the Matoran Universe. It was an attempt to purge the Universe of all that Tren Krom saw as 'dirty'. That vile creature had killed Takuts friends, his allies and everyone else he had sent on the suicide mission. Takut could not deny that the Matoran Universe was a wretched hive of evil. Since Makuta had taken over the entire place had gone to oblivion outside of Metru Nui. And the heroes who had been sent to fix it had failed miserably.

Takut wondered how many others were alive. He hadn't seen a friendly face in longer than he could remember. Days? Weeks? Months? He didn't know. As the ex-Toa clutched the artefact that had brought him here in a grey metal hand, anger rose up inside him. He wanted to hurl it into the distance, out into the grey expanse as far as he could go. But he couldn't bring himself to. It was a small, pink ball the size of his closed fist that possessed powers beyond his comprehension. Whenever he got to the shore of an island, he could use to to transport himself to the shore of the land adjacent. Tren Krom had dispersed one to each hero as they left Metru Nui so that they could get around easily.

The pink orb was Takut's only way of getting back to Metru Nui. He knew it would not be easy to convince Tren Krom to allow him back into the city since he had told them they were never allowed back in until they fully finished the 'task' he'd bestowed upon them. But he had to try. Takut was sick of fighting and being alone. He had to get back to the Matoran. All of a sudden, Takut's thoughts were interrupted by a voice. A real life person's voice, and one that he remembered at that!

"Hello," came the voice. It took Takut a while to remember the owner of the voice. "Hello, is anyone out there? Please, I don't have long. And neither do you."

Takut shot up straight. It was Turaga Vakama. "Yes, I'm here!" He cried, twirling around to see where the voice came from.

"Takut, thank Mata Nui." There was relief in Vakama's voice. Takut soon realised that the sound didn't come from anywhere in particular but from inside his own head. "You have one day to get back to Metru Nui. Tren Krom is struggling to maintain the entire robot body alone, his mind was not created for such a task. Tomorrow he is going to put the entire body of the Matoran Universe, save for the head, on 'standby'. He's cutting all life support out there and focusing efforts on Metru Nui only. There's no telling how well you will be able to survive out there after that."

The news hit Takut like a huge rahi. He didn't even know that was possible. He had so many questions. How did Vakama talk to me like that from Metru Nui? Did he contact others too? But the Turaga's presence was gone from his mind almost instantly. The ex-Toa stood, frozen for a few long moments before jolting into action. He sprinted as fast as he could, dashing across the dusty island towards Metru Nui. He forgot all his woes, all the memories of the past year. But he also momentarily forgot the lessons he'd learnt. He forgot to take care in these lands he didn't understand. As he ran, his feet pounding hard on the grey earth caused something to stir below. He felt the rumbling a second too late. A huge rahi beast burst from the ground beneath Takut, knocking him into his back before landing right on top of him. Pinning him to the ground as its huge maw snapped hungrily at his orange Kakama.

Is this it? He thought, panic-stricken. Will fate take my life just after providing me with hope for home?
