IC:

When the guards at the gates of the courthouse saw Farssak striding up to the door, one of the rookies nearly attempted to attack the rather intimidating Skakdi until stopped by a senior marine. His appearance had always been a cause for alarm; nobody ever expected him to be a lawyer and novelist. People kept assuming that he was a mercenary - it was really annoying seeing all those stereotypes being bandied around.

It really reminded him of the novel he had written about the King of the Steltians, who spent most of his time going around incognito and giving up a marriage with the Queen of the Vortixx for a romance with a poor and humble Matoran. That book had sold very well. Who knew people liked seeing the usually arrogant Steltians act like actual people?

"Apologies for the delay," spoke the Skakdi, his guttural voice echoing around the chamber. "I was having breakfast."

Adjusting his tie, Farssak made his way to the prosecution's side of the court, where he calmly sat down. The defense seemed to be deep in discussion, but from his position, he could not recognise who the attorney was. When the Matoran did a twirl, his eyes narrowed.

"Why is it always Yarre?"

IC: The boat sailed smoothly across the dark waves, spray occasionally splashing up onto the deck as they sped along. Xenin closed his eyes, feeling the chill of the crisp breeze on his face. He held on securely to the mast, Faori poised confidently at the rudder. The dock rushed towards them, and Xenin worried that they would crash. "How do we slow down?!" He yelled over the the roaring wind.

IC- Verak - Ga-Koro Prison

Well, that made three marines standing around my prison. I moaned. "This would be a lot easier if you stopped expectin' me to hand over my mask voluntarily, brothers. As you may have noticed, I don't respond to orders well."

And with a cut in my side, a ringing in my ears that drowned out any other sound, and a couple old bruises, I leaped at the two Toa in my cell, my feet and hands flying faster than the speed of thought at both of their bodies.

OOC: Do you realize how fast that is? :PIC(Matrapolix-Prison)Matrapolix leaped to the side, dodging the rushing Toa, slicing backwards at his back. The strike was not meant to kill; no, in fact, he angled the hook to snag on the Toa's mask and pull it from his face."You're outgunned. Stand down."

IC: Celite

Celite returned the look, only able to hope against hope that her own story would be truthful enough to keep her from the more severe punishments. Still, for now she stayed silent so as to let the proceedings continue. That said, her concentration was incredibly distracted by being bound to the chair in the way that she was.

IC:

Within the courthouses of Mata Nui, it is customary to engage in small talk before the trial officially begins. Of course, 'small talk' in this situation has an extremely broad classification, which meant that many prosecutors and defense attorneys spent most of their time sniping at each other, insulting each other's financial situation, lack of proper armour polish, their fashion sense and the quality of one's tie. However, some lawyers were rather friendly with each other, talking about what plagued their daily lives and how their financial situation had improved.

Yarre and Farssak, despite seeming like the latter, were definitely the first.

"Ah, Mr. Farssak," exclaimed the Matoran, turning away from his analysis of his defendants to look at the other lawyer. "It's such a pleasure meeting you here!"

"Meeting you here is distinctly NOT fabulous."

The Skakdi gave him a quick glance. "Yarre. I see you're defending the assassins."

"This will completely and utterly destroy your reputation and I will laugh when I see you unemployed."

"Why of course! I cannot let these two fabulous ladies go without a good attorney."

"Even though they are guilty and there will be no chance of them going free, I am going to flaunt my superiority and completely embarrass you in this trial."

"Well, you're quite unlucky then."

"Seeing you crash and burn will be fun."

Yarre gave the other lawyer a smile. "Do not fear for me, my friend. Say, how was your morning?"

"I am going to bring about a fabulous trial. Also, your tie looks terrible. You must have only gotten out of bed."

"It was actually, as you say, fabulous."

"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

"Really? How far are you into your newest novel?"

"Your romance novels are bland, unrealistic and not fabulous. The only reason they are successes are because of your ritual sacrifices to the Dark Gods of Capitalism."

"About half-way actua ..."

There was a cough from one of the nearby guards, interrupting their attempts to passively insult each other. Although the trial had not begun, it was still necessary for them to prepare their cases; Yarre to discuss the trial with his clients, and Farssak to assemble his evidence. Giving each other one last glare, the two returned to their duties.

"Right then, sorry about that," said Yarre, turning to Celite and Surina once more. "Let's give a fabulous show~"

IC: CeliteWho is this... The Vo-Turaga thought in her head. Something tells me that this...thing will ruin everything. Still, I may as well say something."Please tell me you can win this." Celite said quietly to Yarre. "And could you please stop saying 'fabulous'? It's quite disturbing."

IC: Celite"There are three sides to this" the Vo-Turaga was quickly becoming less impressed and was beginning to get the sense that she might want to get used to loss of liberty. Still, she had no choice but to have faith in the lawyer. However, she did not want to start yet another argument with Surina in the middle of a courtroom and so wanted to privately say her story. She tried to beckon Yarre closer to her as best she could.

IC Surina

(Ga-Koro, Courthouse):

Celite's efforts did not go unnoticed to Surina. She edged closer and closer until Yarre had absolutely no personal space stuck between Celite and Surina.

"We tell our story together", Surina almost hissed at Celite. "We will not gain anything by fighting amongst ourselves, now that we have a bigger foe to deal with."

IC: CeliteShe nodded. Despite their bickering, Surina was making sense. Conflicting stories would ultimately send them down the worst route sicne they could all be considered unreliable."...You're right." She said, reluctant. "After all, we will just be in trouble otherwise...more, I mean." She looked at Surina with raised would-be-eyebrows before saying, "you begin."

IC Surina

(Ga-Koro, Courthouse):

Surina nodded. "So. We met", she began. "Me and Celite. It was at the Takea Bar. We were talking smalltalk, her, me and the bartender. The bartender started complaining about the Ga-Koro politics and we ended up discussing Hahli's recent achievements to strengthen Ga-Koro - which could have been so much more with different leadership."

Surina nodded at Celite, a signal that she was to continue in a similar fashion.

IC: Celite

She put on a fake smile. This could very easily backfire, but we may as well go along with it. "Right. unfortunately, I was the one who brought on the idea of different leadership, although I had no real intention of forcibly taking it. I'd much rather found my own place, after all." She looked around the court, particularly at the prosecutor who it would seem was far more prepared. Things could be very troublesome indeed. "Surina here wanted to discuss the matter with an outside source, the witness Viima, and so we both went to Le-Koro. Of course, since the witness was her ex boyfriend, he wouldn't be too happy to talk with her, and in the village he was quite distracted so we wanted to take him to Ga-Koro where we could discuss matters without issue." The Turaga was trying to ensure that she did not sound perfectly innocent, and as she mentioned Viima she looked to the Le-Matoran in courtroom. He is one person in particular who could easily create trouble when anything involving him came up.

IC Surina

(Ga-Koro, Courthouse):

"So happened", Surina nodded. "He didn't want to come really, but we persuaded him. We never forced him though, as you may ask him. He made the decision himself. In Ga-Koro we made it to my place where we discussed matters. That was when my poor judgement kicked in. Viima has been dealing drugs in the past, did you know that?"

Something in Surina's eyes was different when she said that.

"Anyway, I did not have anything, because I have never bought drugs, but knew Viima likes to be high when discussing issues like this. The whole meeting we had was private and I wanted him to comfortable, after all. So I sent him to the store to get some wine even as me and Celite prepared something hastily from assorted chemicals. I confess that I wasn't really thinking how dangerous it might be. So he returned and we had a discussion. I offered Viima a drugged drink. Note that he never refused to consume it and he kept consuming it for a while. We discussed very negative things about Hahli and our own opinions on leadership... that must have provoked Viima to do what he did."

"Yes", Surina said. "We were a bit drunk ourselves, Celite and me. You see, that's why we sent Viima to buy more wine. We had drank all that I had. Which wasn't THAT much, though."

IC:In the back of the room, Vos shook his head silently. He could tell that Surina was trying to pass off her actions as an accident, even look like she regretted it, but Yarre wasn't buying it. He wouldn't. Despite what people liked to day about him, the Matoran was clever.Actually, he'd been the defense for most of Vos' arrests.

IC: Trial - Yarre and Farssak

Farssak cleared his throat as he stood up, surveying the courtroom before he began to speak. It would be simple to prove the defendants guilty, especially when there was so much evidence stacked against them. Not even the craziest of ideas that Yarre could cook up would be able to stop him from succeeding.

"Last evening," he began, reading several papers on the desk in front of him, "the witness attempted to assassinate the Akiri while under the influence of alcohol and other chemicals. During his apprehension, one of the accused tried, and failed, to kill him via arrow. She and the other defendant, who had previously been incarcerated for assault, fled to Ko-koro soon after, where they too were apprehended."

He paused for a moment, letting the words sink in.

"The witness has testified to the fact that the defendants were responsible for drugging him and setting him loose on Hahli."

"HOLD IT!"

The Skakdi sighed - here came Yarre's usual modus operandi.

"How can we prove that the witness' testimony is true?" asked the Matoran, gesturing flamboyantly at the prosecutor. "To assume he is correct without any supporting evidence ... one must take this testimony of his with a grain of rice!"

"The expression is 'grain of salt', actually," replied Farssak, "and we have the defendant's own admittal to having drugged him."

Yarre's eyes narrowed. If he let the amateur hack of a romance novelist defeat him in this court of law, his entire reputation would be ruined. No, he would have to find some sort of way to get the upper hand.

"What if the witness had simply used his drugging as plausible deniability?" he asked, slamming his hands down on the desk. "Maybe his original intent had been to spark an inter-village war, and took advantage of his drugged state?"

"You're really grasping at Bulaberry stems, aren't you?" drawled the Skakdi.

A small grin appeared on Yarre's face. "That is not a fabulous saying at all - I believe the expression is 'grasping at straws', no?"

"So...just to clear things up...you're saying he let himself get drugged and then came up with a coherent plan to spark inter-Koro war. While he was drugged."

IC Viima & Surina

(Ga-Koro, Courthouse):

Viima listened to Yarre's speech, a bit baffled. What the Matoran was saying about him wanting to start a war seemed so far-fetched that he wasn't worried for himself, but was prepared to speak. He stood quiet and watched the two lawyers battle it out, enjoying the look on Surina's face as she did one mental facepalm after another.

*

Surina made a mental facepalm. Not that Yarre's objection had been completely in vain, but there was something about the guy's personality that aggravated her. Deep down she doubted he would be able to win the case for them.

IC: Trial - Yarre and Farssak

"There has been a precedent for sparking wars while drugged," replied Yarre. "You may recall the 'Steltian-Vortixx Incident' a few years back, when Norguity Albi, a famed anarchist, was drugged by the Vortixx League For Recreation Drugs and decided to start a war between the League and the Steltians For President Party."

Farssak shuddered, remembering the event all too well. "Please don't mention that again, even if it provided great fodder for my romance novels."

"Not that you managed to do anything worthwhile with your ideas." The Matoran shook his head. "As I recall, Mr. Albi's situation was similar; he claimed his ex-husband had drugged him into doing the act, yet it was simply to pay for their child's school fees."

He jabbed a finger in the direction of Viima.

"It is entirely possible that my clients had NOT drugged him to assassinate the Akiri, but to simply deal with this 'stalker' instead!"

"They aren't your 'clients', Yarre. You didn't hire them."

IC Viima & Surina

(Ga-Koro, Courthouse):

Surina swore in her mind. She had completely forgot to mention the stalker she had made up herself. She would have to incorporate that one to -

"The court calls Le-Matoran Viima to the stand for testimony."

Surina abruptly turned and saw Viima walking to the front.

Viima felt happy about being able to testify. This would be his final chance to get back at Surina once and for all, not just for using him in the assassination scheme, but also for betraying him in their relationship.

It was time to begin.

IC: Trial - Yarre and Farssak

Yarre leaned forward. "Mr. Viima, please inform us of what you had been doing prior to the assassination attempt, and we shall judge whether it is fabulous or not."

Over at the prosecution, Farssak was inwardly gloating at his inevitable victory.

"This is revenge for suing my publisher, Yarre!"

IC Viima & Surina

(Ga-Koro, Courthouse):

"Fabulous?" Viima was confuzzled by Yarre's wording, but decided to ignore that for now. "I was in Le-Koro, fighting an invisible being who was slaughtering people with a Toa."

Surina tilted her head. She did remember Viima mentioning something like this, but nevertheless, it sounded very odd. Surina smiled. With that kind of a backstory Viima's testimony would certainly lose some credibility.

"Surina came to me then", Viima said. "Conveniently Celite appeared right afterwards. They pretended not to know each other - a sign of a plan, if you ask me - and I agreed to help them. Surina was supposed to be stalked by someone and Celite just wanted an escort to Ga-Koro. That's what they told."
