IC: Akira

The last sentence earned Vrolik a snicker from the paladin. "I'm afraid that is not exactly how it works. We're not free to do whatever we want, not by a long shot. That would be disastrous. We have our own code to 'weigh down and impede' you." She explained. "The fact that we are allowed to kill doesn't mean we have to, and we don't until the offender is proven guilty of his crimes." she continued, her eyes narrowing. Akira made a mental note to make sure her students won't become the monsters she is trying to protect the Matoran from. "As for becoming one of us, that can be arranged," she said and folded her arms on her chest, "If you have what it takes. Tell me, toa of Lightning - how many have you killed? If necessary, will you be able to put a criminal down, even if it was your own brother?" she asked, deadly seriousness in her tone. She have seen all too many evil Toa on this island already, and she realized there was a good chance they would in time face one or more of them.

IC: Vorlik

"I have never killed. The Toa code prevents me from doing so. But if I had to kill someone, then I would do it. I wouldn't like to do it, but I would. If we had killed Makuta forthright, where would we be now? The Toa code is out of date. I want to have the ability to kill my enemies, even if I don't want to when I do so."

I used to have a banner here.

IC(Prius, Ta-koro):

"Nowhere, and everywhere," Prius replied, leaning over the desk to sign his name on the list. "I originally came from the Le-koronian jungles, near Kini-Nui, but I've been traveling the island since. I've been to most of the major koros, excluding the lost koro, Ga-Wahi being the last place i visited. I loved the nature of the Ga-koronians, but there's too much water there for me. No, Ta-koro is the place to go, at least, if you want to serve in the guard. As for what I want to do in the guard, I want to serve the people, which is a change from what I used to be. I also want to learn how to defend others. In this climate, it doesn't take much to start a fight, if you know what I mean."

"Food" was my reply. This seemed to be a good answer. Yes, I was hungry. But also somewhat tired. I didn't have enough widgets to buy a house, so at the time, the town's Inn, Lavapool or something, was the best option.

IC (Pehu): "Fair enough" the Matoran commented. "You look like you could use a good meal. Just be careful to keep that sword in its sheath while you're here, eh? We don't want any trouble".

IC: The Lavapool Inn was a large establishment, with rooms to stay the night. I entered the tavern. A considerable group of assorted people had gathered here, and there were a number of discussions taking place. I silently took my seat, next to a wall to the left of the entrance. The Innkeeper called, "Do you want a drink?" My response was yes.

Morally unambiguous.

IC:[Lucira, Ta-koro Guardhouse]Lucira nodded gravely. "Indeed, though we at the guard try not to start fights ourselves."Perhaps she had misjudged the young, Su-matoran, was it? She'd never heard of any Ta-matoran from Le-Koro. There was an edge to his words."Tell you what, why don't we get a drink? I can introduce to this city, and you can tell me of your travels. News from the other Koro is hard to come by these days. You're new, so my treat."

"You were always able to kill your enemies. You chose not to." Akira pointed out, "But there is no shame in being a good person." the paladin smiled, "It is a dangerous path. It is easy to cross the line once you kill the first time. Your reluctance may be a benefit to you. It will keep you safe from the shadows. If you wish, I will teach you our ways." Akira decided, offering Vrolik a handshake. "Besides, You seem like you have at least some experience. It would be good for the rookies to have more people to learn from." she smiled. This may work after all.

(Ta-Koro, Lavapool Inn):

Tuli sat at a table, cradling a glass of... something strong.

It was a bit too early to drink, she realized that. But this was a day off for her and she wanted to just relax and not think too much. She always thought too much, which made her uncomfortable.

The Ta-Matoran glanced around, watching several beings talking at the inn. She saw a Toa of Water, and a Su-Matoran talking to someone, and more. She couldn't believe she had become so interested in the affairs of others. What did they matter to her?

Tuli sipped her drink and waited on.

OOC: Tuli is open for interaction.

"I pulled off some shenanigans with his fireplace and filled the room in a cloud of ash and ember. When the smoke cleared, I was gone, and the Turaga was a limp pile on the ground with a squashed slug beside him. I sang in falsetto from the rooftops at his funeral and created a cocktail in his memory."

IC(Liacada-Lavapool Inn) Liacada's face morphed into a mask of disbelief as he gave his story. "Yeah, I'm sure that's exactly what happened." She shook her head slightly, smiling wistfully. "You know, I'm still morally unsure I was in the right, slaughtering the old man. He was so kind, I've heard. I know he would've spared me. And I left him in a pile of ashes." Her face become dad suddenly, but brightened up immediately."I bought a sweet house with the cash, though."

Tuli suddenly stopped and stiffened. Had she heard someone talk about piles of ash and murder?

She looked at a couple of beings sitting at a table nearby. Yes. Those were suspicious guys there... talking about murder.

Threat to the security of Ta-Koro...

Tuli edged a little closer, trying to make out more of what was being said. If these were murderers, she would have to arrest them...

"Eh. Vakama talked a lot," I said simply, pouring two more shots and waving one glass in front of her face encouragingly. "And I'm pretty that's what all of us did with the cash."
Liacada took the shot and downed it. She began to imitate the voice of the Turaga.
"Listen, my demented children, to a story about a god who will never save your meaningless life. Listen to my three virtues, and model the rest of your worthless existence after them."
"That sounds like the intro to my favorite children's book!" I reminisced wistfully, downing a shot. "You look great for a wanted terrorist, by the way."
"I always look good, Dor, I thought you knew that." She crossed her arms, having about enough to drink. "But I'm always on the move. My next job requires a partner, and it's way overdue. What do you say we team up for real?"
A partner. Leaving Ta-Koro. Tuara. Parole. A blur of thoughts, dizzying and multicolored, multifaceted, swirled through my head at the sudden change in direction of the conversation. Liacada downed her drink sluggishly, and I saw an opening.
"Here. Your room's on me," I offered with a thin, good-looking smirk as my hands scraped the liquor cabinet under the bar and pulled out a key for her. "We'll talk in the morning."

The doors to the bar opened and closed, creaking with just the same tired agony as they had done a million times before. I looked around, silently judging all the guests with my intense stare, and spotted my on-again-off-again suspect chatting it up with a stranger. While another at a nearby table was eavesdropping on them.

I figured the listener wouldn't mind some company, and I quickly moved to her table. As I sat down, Dorian handed the other a key, and said something about a room, apparently he wasn't interested in continuing the conversation.

"You're wasting your time, you know that?" I said to her.

"I've been watching that guy for a long time. By all outward appearences he's a former criminal. He's currently a councelor for the very institution you're working for, and he's living with Tuara Drigton. For the most part, he's clean. Every time I find something that might look like incriminating evidence it leads me to a dead end. He has a sizable criminal history, but apart from that... there's little to no reason to arrest him"

"Presently, we're three. But if what happened to Fiera, who you just seen leave, is any sign, than there are at least two others. More If others like you sign up. One of them is here, with luck, Fiera will find him or her. The other one appears to live southwest of here." Akira summarized. "Oh, and as the teams go, hm... No, we actually didn't work in teams at all..." She begun and took a seat on a nearby bench. Massaging her temples and taking a deep breath to calm herself down, she dived into her mind once again, trying to recall some of her memories.

"No. Those who left the Citadel... We worked alone - traveled the land, helped the Matoran wherever we went..." She spoke with her eyes closed, focusing on her thoughts, trying not to lose the current string. "I was a Mender. Yes, the number four was important, but only because there were four founders of the Order..." She continued in monotone, quite surprised how much came back in this attempt. "There was the Knight - A warrior skilled with any weapon he touched, and the founder of the Warrior caste. Also the Witch - A mistress of her element, capable of tearing sown buildings and armies at the snap of her fingers."

Beads of sweat appeared on her forehead as she was pressing for more information. Akira was at this point completely oblivious to the world around her, her form hovering slightly above the bench, enveloped in a faint blue glow. She continued in her calm, monotone voice: "Then there were two calmer souls... The Healer, who was aiding the Matoran in a non violent way, tending to their wounds and spirits. And finally, the Priest, who supposedly could see visions of the future..." Her voice started to grow weak.

The glow around her slowly fainted, the process leaving her exhausted. "Uh... sorry, I can't recall anything else right now." She apologized, but reached out to her bag. the paladin pulled out a scroll and unwrapped it. "It would appear though, that when faced with greater challenge, we did indeed bound into teams." She said, looking at the image of herself with her fallen brothers. She had to remember some day who did this to them. And she hoped that the person responsible was still alive - so she could personally deal with him. "But to answer your question, there were four castes. The Warriors, who excelled at wielding their weapons. The Sorcerers, who mastered their elemental abilities. Menders who knew how to heal body and mind. And the Seers, who sought the future, but also archived history. There's little point in that now however. The castes evolved in time, when their numbers grown large enough. with the maybe five of us, it will take a lot of time to get back there."

I rythmically drummed my fingers on the table as I locked eyes with the hot mess on the other side. It was time to once again delve into the intricacies of a private eye's life.

"First of all: your expression while eavesdropping on them was one of caution and judgement, not one of interest or curiosity, which implies you're not a big fan of breaking the law, second: you're clearly tired, and drinking an entire troop's worth of Ta-Koronan Ale. I've seen a lot of guard members come and go like that."

Almost as if realizing for the first time she had been drinking some of the strongest stuff of the inn, Tuli glanced at her glass. Then, a bit sheepishly, she pushed it aside, although there was still some left.

"Uhm, yeah, you didn't see that..." she said. "Very well observed, I must say. How did you become so good at this stuff?"

Handsome AND smart, Tuli thought. Rare qualities nowadays.

I ordered a glass of the finest Le-Koronan wine (shaken, not stirred) and leant casually back in my chair as I just realized I just might have a rather pleasant evening ahead of me.

The scum of the underground could wait, for once.

"I've always been a social creature" I monologued "I have associated myself with the highest of the high and the lowest of the low, for better or worse"

"What I have realized is that within everyone there is the potential for destruction, for savagery, a primal drive to do the unspeakable. My job consists of rooting out those who succumb to that drive"

IC Tuli

(Ta-Koro, Lavapool Inn):

Tuli analyzed Khervos with interest. His words were so carefully calculated, yet the words came like a fluent stream.

"Impressive", Tuli said. "It is comforting to know that there are still men who care for the public well-being... and have a wider perspective in mind."

Tuli ordered a glass of wine. There was no point in drinking strong alcohol in the presence of a man.

"May I ask why you are visiting Ta-Koro? Forgive me if I am wrong, but your appearance refers to Onu-Koro."

"I'm every bit the resident of Ta-Koro. Although I do frequently venture to Onu-Koro, I am not an Onu-Matoran, I am a Ba-Matoran"

I took another sip of the wine, forcing the constant voice telling me to lay off on the alcohol into the deepest recesses of my mind, where it became yet another vice to constantly gnaw at my conscience, until it one day whittled away completely.

"There are not many of us, though, and my appearence does allow me to blend in with the Onu-Koronans, which is often of a big help in my business."

Tuli was slightly surprised by the revelation. It was actually a pleasant surprise, come to think of it. A Matoran not strictly affiliated with a village had a certain charm to them. And this Matoran was proving to be very unique. Tuli decided to push things around a little.

"That is very fascinating", she said. "I have to admit I like exotic men. Your generic Ta-Matoran is blind and follows orders not because it is a good thing to do, but because a higher authority dictates them. Here, I bet you know how to be your own boss."

And so I had ended up here, in the ever so sweet and deceptive attention of a lovely lady who'd already had a little too much to drink.

"Khervos, you lucky Son of a Tarakava" I said sarcastically to myself, taking another careful sip of the wine as I found myself caught in a dangerous trap I myself had engineered.

"The world needs its Mahi Goats, just as much as it needs its lone Kavinika" I said.

"Hmm? Whazzat?"

I was handed the alcohol order and then looked back at the table it originated from; my very fingers itched as the paper soaked into their pores, and I could feel my blood starting to boil as I looked down at all the alcohol in front of me and then back at the attendant who had given me the order.

"Dor, dude, it's not a big deal. Just shake the wine--?"

"Shake the wine? What do I look like, some uncultured schmuck who learned how to play with alcohol by shotgunning beers in back alleys? You don't shake wine," I hissed, letting my inner alcohol Connis-Dor take over. "Give me two wine glasses."

I poured wine - regular wine - into the glasses and then brought them over; the female had been popping glances up at me for eons. Matoran. Looked at me with disgust as I approached; the other guy looked apprehensive, but kept his cool. Either I hooked up with her sister or she was a cop.

"Hi, sir, err...if I'm reading this order right, then I'm gonna let you know I just gave you plain old wine, because you don't shake or stir wine. You know. Because it's wine."

The paladin shook her head. "I have never been there. Honestly, I have only seen Ga and Ta wahi so far. I only woke up on the shores very short time ago." She explained. "But whoever he or she is, I hope they can avoid getting into trouble before we find them." Akira sighed. "Anyway, what is your story? What did you do before becoming a Toa?" she asked, wanting to know something about Vorlik in return. "If you can remember that is. IC: Nikarra (Ta-Koro)

Nikarra opened her eyes as she heard a clinking at her feet. Blinking, she stood up, and looked down at the widgets someone had thrown near her. She waited to see that no one was looking, and then picked them up, putting them in the same compartment as one of her knives. She felt light-headed, and she stumbled as she walked, leaning against the walls of buildings, earning scared looks from passersby. To them, she was homeless and dangerous.

She sighed.

Her plan remained the same as it had been before -- find a job, get money, fix her life. But as it turned out, there weren't any jobs for a drunk, broke, starving ex-assassin. There was only one option left:Nikarra was going to become a waitress.

She walked into the Lavapool Inn, ready to give up what pride she had and settle for the lowest paying job with no particular requirements available. But first, she was going to get a drink.

Nikarra set down at the bar, and took out the widgets that whoever had woken her up had thrown, before searching for the barkeep.

"Sorry, it's a package deal."

The words cut into her and she froze, her eyes settling on the person who had spoken them. Yes, it was him.

Nikarra had just found herself reunited with Dorian.

IC:

"First off, 'hey, Dorian?' Only the people I like can just go 'Hey, Dorian--'"

"Hey, Dorian."

I didn't even have to turn around to recognize the voice. I'd heard that voice every morning, afternoon and night for a solid year. I'd heard that voice giggle, and cry, and laugh, and moan, and I'd seen the tentative smile that went with it. One time, I'd gone so far as to paint that voice, to actually put on paper the flowing melody of sounds that made it up. I had taken that voice from what it once was and shifted it into something new, but I hadn't stopped there. I'd taken the girl it belonged to, and then I'd shifted her and molded her and made her into what she was, for better or for worse. Did I want to see her? Should I turn around? Would it be worth the pain it would dredge up in her and the unknown emotion it might bring up for me? Was I that far gone that I'd just ignore her and let her drift like a phantom back out the door, fade away into the stars to stare down at me every time I roamed the streets?

Not quite. Not yet.

"Take the bottle," I muttered to the shmuck at the table, letting it slide down and drop onto the table. "Shake it, and you're banned from this place for life."

Then I turned around, and I couldn't help it. My heart let out a little pang of shame. Nikarra sat, giving me the thousand yard stare her mouth twitching spasmodically as it vainly tried to smile; it was clearly an effort obviously beyond her in her tired state. The area around her eyes was dark and semicircular, the eyes themselves dimmer than usual, and she was nearly stick thin almost like she'd been deliberately starving herself. She'd propped herself up on the bar, shivering, all of her strength being tested with what should have been an ordinary task for most normal girls. In three steps I had crossed back over to the bar; in five I was standing in front of her, my black cashmere scarf and hat removed and placed around her head for some semblance of warmth.

"Hang on. I'll get you something warm to drink."

"Thanks," Nikarra smiled weakly, resisting the urge to look down at the scarf. Dorian loved that scarf. She might venture to say that he cared more about it than he ever did about her, but evidently that was not true, given its presence around her neck. Dorian was being... kind? And he was being hot, but that came naturally to him. She'd forgotten how hot he was.

No. She wasn't going to give in to that side of her. Things had been terrible back then. Things are worse now.

Nikarra was hot once. Not anymore. Now she was sickly and fragile, barely able to hold her own weight, and Dorian was the first person to have shown her kindness in a long time. The kindness was a shock. The person giving it even more so. She had every right to be attracted to him, not just based on his appearance but based on how he was behaving to her. Yeah. It was alright, for now. Nothing was going to happen. She wasn't a waitress yet, she still had her pride, she wasn't just going to fall into a giggling mess and leap at him, and not just because she lacked the energy.

Although becoming a waitress here was becoming an increasingly attractive job opportunity...

All things considered, it could have been worse.

Her problems weren't physical; though she'd lost poundage, she didn't look anorexic or particularly starved, and everything I'd given her callous props points for about her figure was still there largely. Her body just had a particular look to it like mine used to get when I was a Mark Bearer and I was starting to run haggard from lack of nourishment. In my old accessories, she was still easily recognizable as the Mark Bearing fangirl who had worn similar fashions as me and had followed me everywhere for the better part of a year after Bad Company had gotten off the ground. No, she looked like Nikarra, but she wasn't quite the same Nikarra. At some point, demons had started gnawing away at the vulnerable, soft parts of her soul, the parts that I had wiggled into in the name of making a buck and then sucked dry.

"Your drink du jour was...God, don't tell me, I got this..." I muttered to myself, tilting my head upwards towards the ceiling as though I were about to puff smoke from a cigarette up into the fan to avoid getting it in Nikki's face. My azure eyes fluttered like butterfly wings, caught in a sort of REM as I accessed my memory banks and went to Nikarra's file, searching through everything I knew about her past, her personality, her tastes, and her obsessions.

See also: Dorian Shaddix.

See also: Fangirls.

See also: Bourbon, neat. On the rocks, but only just.

I poured two shots of bourbon and slid one to her, also taking the liberty of sliding her a menu discreetly, almost like we were at the poker tables again and I was showing her a hand at the card tables before I played it and won us both another splurge of dessert. Man, good times. Nikarra and I, we'd had some good frickin' times. Before I destroyed her outlook on men and her life and all that.

"It's all on me. Just take it easy."

Nikarra drank the bourbon, and glanced at the menu. God, she was hungry. She'd eaten fairly recently, hadn't she? She remembered eating breakfast. That was this morning, wasn't it?

No, actually, it might have been yesterday. That probably wasn't good. She glanced over it, trying to focus on the words and falling flat. She wouldn't let Dor know how far she'd fallen. She couldn't. She would just play it cool. "What would you recommend?"

"That depends on whether you want to focus on gaining weight or replenishing nutrients first," I replied, lifting up one hand and examining it gently, along with the arm and the veins that it was attached to gently. "You've lost about four percent of your body weight since the last time I saw you, and you were pretty slim to begin with. Go with a burger, add cheese for the startling lack of calcium. Lettuce, tomato, pickle for added vitamins and nutrients. Ketchup and mayo for flavor. Side of french fries for some good old carbs, plus a little bit of salt - not too much, or it'll get in your bloodstream and your heartlight will give out - for added sodium content. Top it off with some Bula juice. The bourbon has you warmed up enough."

She blinked. I winked.

"You know you hooked up with the greatest of all time, right?"
