poll conflict

Posted by ~Shockwave~ on Dec 17 2012 - 10:16 PM

This is a frustration I've had for some time.

There is a rule stating that if a topic can be a poll that it must be.

The only way to make a poll is to be a premier member.

Not to mention that posting in that forum doesn't give you posts (If I remember correctly) making it an unappealing place to start a topic.

And that forum looks like a baren wasteland.

So, this is my suggestion:
Remove the rule.
And make posts in the voting booth count.

That may even make pmship more attractive. (not to me, but good luck with that one.)

and sorry for any mistakes. I'm on my phone.

I've been in favor of this idea for a while now, as long as a new rule requiring members to explain their vote (instead of just stating who or what they voted for) is put into place.

I think it'd breathe some life into the Voting Booth, but I could be wrong.

There actually is no rule stating that if a topic can be a poll it must be closed in favor of one. It depends on the topic's potential for discussion, as determined by a leader of the forum in question. For example, I could have easily closed this topic (don't post in there; it's dead now) in favor of a poll, but the first few posts proved that the topic would attract more than one-sentence answers. It just turns out that most topics that can be polls do not offer much beyond one-word or one-sentence replies. And so they are directed to the Voting Booth.

Anyway, I do not believe we will be seeing any Premier perks being taken away. That said, however, it may be a good idea to evaluate post count addition in forums like Voting Booth and Shops & Kits. Things are different here on the new forums and topics aren't being exploited in those subforums like they used to be. There is a conflict, though: if posts be required to be extensive and thought-out in Voting Booth, then there is little point in diverting discussion from existing forums. It becomes an issue of balance. VB might get more activity if posts counted there, but then other subforums would lose some. And there isn't too much activity to go around. I don't think there is much that can be done, in the end.

I could have sworn that there was a rule.

Regardless, the idea could still work.

And I was going to suggest making it available to everyone. But figured that wouldnt happen

Personally I'd like if polls were allowed in all discussion-based subforums because the "must use voting booth" limitation really turns a lot of people away due to the lack of posts counting (which people shouldn't care about anyway tbh). I don't like that every poll-based topic gets smashed into one forum instead of the individual forum it'd be suited for.

Right. On other forums you could just check "Add a poll" on any one of your topic and add a poll to it. The voting booth is kinda useless... Half the topics are revived/closed anyways... I say just let the polls loose in the forums and let all members create them (Probably a good idea for new members to be unable to make a poll though) and then it would be great.

This is exactly why it should stay a PM-only perk. From what I can see here, a lot of non-PM's want to be able to make polls. That's why it's a PM perk, because it will drive people to buy it, so they can make polls. If everyone could make polls, then it would be pointless for some people to get PM.

if that was the case the voting booth would look like a highly populated forum. not like an abandoned one.

I'm not saying make it for everyone, I'm saying to stop closing topics in favor of polls that most members can't make.

though, to be perfectly fair, I can't understand the logic behind it being a PM perk.

I can only agree about this.

Well, it's simple, BZP needs money, we know that, and the only way to get it is by PM so they need to make people willing to buy it. Some people, like you, want to maken polls so they made it a premium perk to encourage them to buy PM. Making polls is not a nessecairity, but its a fun extra so they made it a perk.

Aye, I rather like this idea. Restructure things so polls can be made anywhere, but still keep it limited to Premiers.

That's the problem. It is a necessity.  at least in the old forums, the topics are closed in favor of polls that are left to die in the voting booth.  what I'm proposing is to stop it from being a requirement, and possibly make it more desirable.
(and this is in a quote box... -_-)

Just by looking at your post makes it obvious why it is a Premier perk. If you think polling is a necessity, than why not go and get Premier Membership? There's no sense in complaining about it being a PM perk, but I do agree with Gata and HAZMAT about having the ability to make polls in every applicable forum based on its discussion. This would make it easier for people to find a topic once it's been closed and polled. Plus, the Voting Booth is no longer needed. It's a dying forum, and I think HAZMAT's suggestion could popularize polling a lot more on BZP.

Not all topics are closed in favor of a poll, Mr Wind just said he allows topics that could be polls if it offers enough discussion:

There actually is no rule stating that if a topic can be a poll it must be closed in favor of one. It depends on the topic's potential for discussion, as determined by a leader of the forum in question. For example, I could have easily closed this topic (don't post in there; it's dead now) in favor of a poll, but the first few posts proved that the topic would attract more than one-sentence answers. So I propose you open a topic and ask your question in a way it offers more discussion than just and answer.

Polls can now be posted in all discussion forums. They are still a Premier Member perk and that is how we plan to keep them.
