The "Log-Out" Archives

Posted by Reznas on Nov 17 2012 - 04:12 PM

I know this has been a problem expressed in both the past and, most likely, recently as well. The constant log-outs in the forum archives are quite tedious and annoying for all of us. I'm not sure if there is a way to dodge this, but it would be considerably helpful to look into it.

Whenever I know I'm going into the archives, I set my browser to not accept any cookies. When it is set to this, I can go into the archives without having to log in when I return to these forums.

Still can't log into the archive, but the tedium can be reduced this way.

I agree that it needs to be solved, and if it's an easy fix I think we should go ahead and do it. However, if there are unforeseen problems with solving it, I'd be in favor of fixing bigger and more important issues first.

An easier way is if you use Google Chrome, you can just open an incognito window, which allows you to log on to the archives and still stay logged in here, as long as you have both windows open.

Multiple profiles work, too; then, you can still track your history.

Yeah, on IE I use InPrivate browse whenever I go to the archives, just so I can log in and search around.

Personally, I wonder if it'd be easier to make search available to guests and put a CAPTCHA on it to hinder bot searches causing lag issues.

I would also suggest allowing login to bypass that CAPTCHA. I do a lot of searches and would find such a thing annoying.

I've gone back and looked over the archives quite a few times, and whenever I log in, it logs me out here, just like everyone else here. I always have to open another web browser to do that. If that could be fixed, I would also appreciate it.

I... actually might have an idea of what the problem is here. I just thought about it, and it makes sense...

When cookies are created to store the log-in, it has a certain name, right? I'd bet you anything that both are trying to share the 'same' cookie space. The archive knows it's not the right cookie, so it replaces it, no matter if you log-in or not. However, doing so removes the new forum's details, and since it's obviously not backwards compatible, it does the same thing when you go back. Hence why you have to log in again, even if you don't log into the archive or normal site when flipping back and forth.

I'd need to test my theory further, but if it is correct, it'd explain the log-outs... I'm not sure if the cookie name can be changed, though, for even just one of the sites.

That actually makes sense. Neat.

I also think I know why the cookies have the same name. The BZPower front page. The front page has a login indicator on it that says I am logged in as fishers64 no matter which version of the forums I am logged into.

My theory is when the admins set up the boards originally, they set up that indicator to read a cookie in receiving computer...a cookie with a specific name. So when the boards were upgraded, they gave the login indicator cookie for the new boards the same name so the indicator on the front page would read correctly.

Only problem is now the cookies, as BZP Blade explained, have the same name and erase each other.

We've never set the name of the cookie, that's something done by default by our forum software. I'd have to look into changing the name of one of them.

I just get around by using two browsers, since google chrome is glitchy on the computer I normally use, so it's not too big an issue for me. Nonetheless, it'd be nice to see it fixed, but not a big priority.

Well, I found a way to change the cookie name. You should be able stay logged in to both the current forums and the archives now.
