Copy/pasting from rich text editors

Posted by Dralcax on Nov 18 2012 - 12:47 PM

OK, this has been a recurring issue whenever I copy and paste something from Word or Google Drive. This happens when I’m writing a story, a long RPG post or character profile, or whatever. The text turns bold, certain punctuation marks like apostrophes get scrambled and replaced with &rsquo: or some random stuff like that. Normally I will try to fix that. To give you an example of what happens, I will type all this in Google Drive, and copy/paste it and I won’t fix the formatting. So has anyone else seen this issue?

EDIT: Apostrophe scrambling is rare now, but you get the point.

I get this sometimes whenever I post chapters of my epic. I've never gotten bold text, but I've gotten everything else you've described. It's a pain in the neck to try and fix.

The thing is, I've never actually been able to figure out the process that causes this to happen. Over half the time, it works like a charm - but sometimes, the editor decides to be mean. I think it might have something to do with turning BBCode on and off with the little light-switch button in the upper left-hand corner of the editor, but that doesn't always scramble the stuff into BBCode either.

Yes, I've seen that. Try pasting as plain text (Ctrl-Shift-V on Windows). That should prevent that from happening.

It's generally happens when the board translates Rtf langauge to plain text. I even get it in email notifications from the board on long story chapters and such. (The emails have the ’ in place of quotes, and … in place of periods). Same conversion, same problem.

Yup, this has happened to me (the quotation mark issue is the big one that I've noticed). It can get annoying especially since I use Word for most of my really long and planned posts (such as story chapters).

So, that resulted in me writing chapters from scratch in the posts themselves. I'll try ctrl+shift+v as mentioned above next time it happens to see if that works.

This is a forum software issue. I've opened a ticket with Invision.

I've received some feedback from Invision (they're almost as fast as I am):

There is a special button on the editor to use when pasting in content from Microsoft Word that should be used.

In [the next release], users can change their editor preferences to paste in contents as plain text by default, which should resolve some of the issues you are describing if the users choose to use that feature.

Please let me know guys if the button he's talking about works for you.

Yes, it works.

Thanks for the feedback.
