Delete All Notifications Button

Posted by Tiz Arrior on Nov 18 2012 - 02:52 PM

This is a very minor issue that most people probably don't even need. =P

Pretty much, I use the notifications list a lot. So, um, I've kinda accumulated about 50,000 notifications and counting. And, well, once I look at the notifications, they're useless to me from then on... But, the only way to delete them, is to manually check off each box, and keep that up for every page(1003 in my case).

I was thinking if a 'delete all notifications' button could be added, it'd save a LOT of time and hassle for members, and since I see a lot of the staff using the notifications a lot, they could probably benefit from such a button, since they'd likely gather up even more notifications than I would in a single day. Which can be around 100 notifications for the record.

There's a similar deal for PMs, but that's nowhere near as bad, since you max at 1000 conversations as a Premier Member, and even less as a normal member. So you really could just go through and delete them on your own.

Again, it's not a big deal, but I do keep wanting to delete my unneeded notifications... It's just the sheer amount of them that prevents me from doing so. xD If it's impossible, then I understand.

Possible a "Select All" feature would be easiest to code. That would be just about as simple.

On the page where you can manually delete notifications, simply click the uppermost checkbox on the same height as the "Saved Notifications" headline. I haven't tried it yet but that should delete at least all the notifications on one page.

Yeah, that's the thing... You can select a whole row of them with that checkbox, and it works well enough... If you don't have 1000 pages to delete. That's why I mentioned how it was a minor thing. But when you consider that the site can be slow sometimes, especially for notifications, it's harder to delete those early notifications. =/

There is a setting I could change to only keep notifications for one month instead of three. As it is though, you must get a LOT of notifications if three months' worth is 1000+ pages. Maybe follow less stuff? ;)

Three months? Hmm... No; it's definitely not three months back... The earliest notification I have, is from back in March... Which is probably when I last attempted to cut down my notifications. =P

I do get a lot of notifications, though, but luckily it's gone down in the past little bit. It didn't help for the longest time that I followed a ton of the RPGs. ^^' But, if it's supposed to be only keeping three months worth, then I actually just found a bug, in that it keeps it more along the lines of eight or nine months. 0_o I'll definitely be considering following less things, though. =)

Huh, I just checked mine, and they go back to March too. Very interesting. Will have to dig into this some more.

It is interesting, yes. =O Thanks for looking into it, though; if I had've known about the three month thing, I probably would have filed it as a bug, instead of a suggestion. ^^'

I reduced the timeframe to a month and still see eight months or so of notifications. This seems like a bug in the software. I'll file a ticket with Invision.

I've filed a ticket. We'll see what they say.

Feedback from Invision:

I can't reproduce this on [the next release] and I'm 99.9% confident this is a duplicate as I remember fixing it. I can't find the original report however. It's also worth noting that the old notifications are only cleared out when the member receives a new one and not simply by adjusting the setting.

I've received new notifications since tweaking the settings and still have the eight months of notifications, but we'll have to wait until we upgrade to the newest version to see if this is fully resolved.

Alright then; thanks for looking into it. =) It is odd that it does this, of course, but at least it was checked. =)

Have you seen this issue since the upgrade?

Yep; that was the first thing I checked, more or less, after the upgrade. I still have 955 pages of notifications(I cleared out the missing amount myself in the mean time), and it's still logging back to March. =/ And, well, I've gotten many notifications since then, so it's not a case of not having received a new notification...

Alright, I'll have to contact Invision about it again.

Invision has looked into it, and the job to clear the notifications is running. Unfortunately, there's over a million of them, so it could take a while. We'll see how it goes over the weekend.

That's great!  Millions of old, useless Notifications must take up a bunch of space on their servers.

Alright, forgot to get back to this; but it looks like it all saves up until September now, so I'd say it worked. =D I'll probably clear out the rest myself when I get a chance. It's not quite so daunting now, since it's not 1000 pages. =P

Excellent! Thanks for letting me know.
