Reorganize emoticons

Posted by Lyichir on Nov 28 2012 - 04:07 PM

BZPower has always had too many emoticons, in my opinion; but since the forum upgrade changed the way emoticons are chosen it has become more of a problem.

Now by hitting the emoticons button we're treated to a disorganized display of emoticons along the bottom of the reply box. There may be some hidden order to them, but I'm not seeing it. And unless you hit the "show all" button to open a new window (which itself has little sense of organization), you have to scroll through multiple pages of them before getting to some of the more useful ones.

I propose a new organizational method that orders emoticons by their usefulness. Standard emoticons like :), :(, or B) could get top billing. BZP exclusive emotes like :smilepakarinu:or :w: could be placed near the end, so that people who use them have easy access to them and people who don't don't have to scroll through them. Ideally, BZP could delete a number of the emoticons which are either aesthetically inconsistent with the norm ( :alert: as opposed to B)) or just generally useless (who really uses :php-sign: ? Isn't :ugly-sign: flaming by default, and grammatically incorrect to boot?) But I understand this might cause issues in existing topics where these were used.

I've wanted it reorganized from the start, but since the forums came back up, I've gotten used to typing the specific text that generates the emoticons that I use.

Also, next time be sure to make Issue Type set to "Suggestion". ;)

Sorry, this is my first thing I've proposed in the tracker. Is there a way for me to change it myself at this stage, or does it have to be staff that do so?

Unfortunately you can't change it to a suggestion once it's posted.

Regarding the issue - I actually started working on organizing these when I was working on another ticket. If you look there's pockets of them sorted together, I was using essentially a merge sort algorithm, but it's really a pain to do it with the number of emoticons we have. Now that you've reminded me I'll get back to this at some point.

The list has been organized. The majority are in alphabetical order by the tag name. Then come the ones with the signs, then the ones with the flags, then the Bionicle and BZPower ones. I could probably go through the list and cull some of the more obscure ones, but hopefully this will help.

Thoughts?

Looks good.
