Chapter 103: A Blade, a Battle, and a Buffoon

Khadaz walked towards the gates, calling, “Hello? Anyone here?”
He reached out towards the handle, but then something grabbed him and threw him back, shouting, “Halt, intruder!”
Khadaz said, “What was tha…gah…eh…”
A large creature with a sword stood at the gates, and it said, “You haven’t died yet…but your Spirit has no revival techniques. Come to make a Blade of Souls contract?”
“Um…y-yeah,” Khadaz said, trying to hide his shock.
The creature smiled and said, “I get that reaction a lot. I am a Guard, in charge of preventing illegal revival.”
“Revival?”
“Some people come here to bring a soul back to life, and that’s against the rules. Anyway, if you’ve come to make a contract, who are you looking for?”
Khadaz thought for a second, realizing he should have figured that out before he came. “Hm…oh, of course! Is Nikari Reiha here?”
The Guard frowned and said, “Oh, that one…that is a problem. You see, he agreed to a revival, so now that he’s back, he’s been arrested. I can take you to see him, though.”
The Guard led Khadaz through the gates and down a corridor, and then instructed him to wait in a small, windowless room lit by four torches while he went on ahead. The Guard soon returned, and following him was Nikari, who said, “Hey Khadaz. Been awhile. How’s Amy doing?”
The Guard said, “Nikari’s sentence is not yet over. Come back in 10 years and we can negotiate.”
“Sorry, but I only have 10 days,” Khadaz said. “The reason he chose to come back was to fight me. If you punish me, then will Nikari be allowed to leave?”
The Guard thought for a while, and then asked, “Can you find no other to make a contract with? I really don’t know what to do, since you are the first to make such a proposal.”
“Let the orange-haired one go,” a voice said.
The Guard turned to see Yume approaching the group, and he said, “Lady Yume? Are you certain?”
“My master will repay you for this inconvenience,” Yume promised.
“Sounds like I have a friend in high places,” Nikari chuckled as the Guard unlocked his handcuffs. “A contract, is it? Why should I sign?”
“You owe a debt to my master,” Yume said. “If you agree to sign a Blade of Souls contract, he will forgive that debt.”
Yume handed a scroll to Khadaz, and he said, “Thanks.”
“No questions?” Yume observed.
“Would you answer them if I asked?”
“A good point,” Yume said, and then she left. Khadaz unrolled the scroll and read it, and then signed his name on the line.
“Before I sign,” Nikari said, “fill me in on what’s going on.”
Khadaz answered, “Made up with Amy, got to Level 9, fought Union, discovered BionicleKeyblade is alive and named Vinxeng, and now we’re training for when Mutant-Isle lines up with the Mountain of Death in ten days.”
Nikari did nothing for a short time, and then signed the contract and said, “Amy’s going to be furious at both of us for this, but this prison is just to creepy…”
The Guard then stepped forward and said, “Now then, Khadaz, you will be returned to the living world. Nikari, in a short time you will be sent for to be escorted to your new resting place.”
The Guard then clicked his fingers, and Khadaz found himself back in the Shadow Spire, holding the contract.
“I see you were successful,” Norscu said.
“Yeah…but I’m never going back there,” Khadaz said.
“The land of the dead is a bit uncomfortable for those still living,” Norscu said. “I’ve tried to contact the souls with telepathy, but without the contract the Guards won’t let them pass. Now I shall explain the Blade of Souls…the contract allows the soul to come to this world when you call. However, instead of taking on human form, it is transformed into a substance called Soul Steel. The Soul Steel then shapeshifts into a form with appearance and abilities based on the soul it is made from, and the soul talks to the technique-user to help him or her fight and get the most efficient results. Alright, try it.”
Khadaz put a hand out and said, “Uh…Third of the Four Forbidden Mutations: Blade of Souls…eh, I call upon the soul of Nikari Reiha.”
A bar of metal then materialized in Khadaz’s hand with a flash of energy, and it transformed into a duplicate of Obscura’s sword with an orange hilt.
“What the…” Khadaz muttered. “I was expecting something more…original.”
Khadaz could hear Nikari’s voice in his head, shouting, “Hey! I signed the contract, come here, and THAT’S how you treat me?! Besides, a simple sword is better!”
“Hey, if I hadn’t come, Yume probably wouldn’t have showed up to save you!”
“Are you two arguing about something?” Norscu asked.
“Huh? Didn’t you hear him?” Khadaz said.
“Only the one who used the technique can hear what the soul is saying,” Norscu informed him.
Nikari said, “So only Khadaz can hear me…? That makes you my translator then.”
Khadaz sighed and planted the sword in the ground, and Norscu said, “I see you made a poor choice…you need to learn to get along, else you’ll both be weaker. You can’t afford to be like this when you fight the 10th, or he will destroy you. It’s learn to get along, or die.”
“…He makes a good point,” Nikari commented.
“You’re already dead,” Khadaz said.
“Yeah, well…whatever.”

By the end of the day, everyone was exhausted. They had each made a bit of progress, but the Element-Lords knew they needed to work harder tomorrow. They went to their rooms and fell asleep, and al was quiet for several hours.
Around midnight, Khadaz sat up in bed and looked around. “Darn,” he sighed. “Now I’m having nightmares about that ‘land of the dead’ place.”
He reached for his bag, but stopped. Vinxeng was probably asleep, he figured, so he instead took Bionicle Twilight and fused with it.
As he climbed up to the roof, down the hall in Nk’s room, an Orb on his desk began to rattle. The Orb rolled over to the edge of the table, and then created a small spark to launch itself into Nk’s hand. It melted into the boy’s palm, and the armor of Dread slowly crawled over him.
“Hm…Nk’s exhausted…Omni’s asleep…Ikhav’s alone without that super-Spirit of his…what time could be more perfect?”
Dread, using Nk’s body, got up and walked out into the hallway and down the stairs. When he got outside, he flew up to the roof and landed silently. Dread snuck up behind Khadaz, lifted Suffering, and then brought it down…and it collided with Bionicle Twilight’s staff.
“Can I help you?” Khadaz asked. “If you’ve gone to the trouble of possessing Nk, then it must be pretty important.”
Dread stepped back and said, “Just tryin’ to kill ya, that’s all. Surprised you could tell the kid wasn’t in control.”
“Did I do something to offend you?” Khadaz asked.
Dread sent Dark Bone spears at Khadaz, but he used Twilight Reversal to send them back. Dread flew up to avoid the attack, then replied, “Not you, your family. One of your ancestors tried to wipe out my whole race.”
Dread used Dark Bone Flurry, catching Khadaz by surprise, and then dove down and hit him with Strike of the Dark Bone.
“I suppose I should apologize, but if your whole race was as charming as you are, I think I might have made the same choice,” Khadaz said, activating his Stealth Armor.
Dread was hit by a Will of the Order, and then he shouted, “Shut up, kid! Now stay still so I can kill you!”
Dread put a hand to the roof and made multiple Dark Bones sprout, hitting Khadaz and deactivating his Stealth Armor.
“Sorry, but I don’t feel like cooperating,” Khadaz said, destroying the bones with Twilight.
He Chronicled the Dread Claw and powered up with Twilight Gathering, and Dread said, “Kid, you’re really annoying me. Try to understand the position I’m in; my ancestors were all killed, and I just wanna avenge ‘em. Wouldn’t you do the same thing?”
“Can’t say,” Khadaz answered. “But what I CAN say is that because of you Curse of the Dark Bone thing, your Fusion Energy is almost out.”
Dread’s eyes widened, and Khadaz blasted him with Twilight Cannon.
“…Heh heh,” Dread chuckled as he began to fall off the roof. “My fusion energy’s all out…and now Nk’s going to fall with no wings to save him.”
Khadaz now realized what Dread was saying, but because of the Twilight Cannon he was unable to move. Dread’s armor vanished, and Nk and the Orb fell off the building, but about halfway down, an invisible force caught them and put them on the ground safely.
Khadaz soon recovered and jumped to the ground himself, and said, “Good timing. But what are you doing up, Kazumi?”
Kazumi de-fused with her Spirit and replied, “The fight woke me up. You should have thought before you knocked him off the roof…anyway, I should be leaving in the morning, probably before anyone wakes up, so let them know.”
Khadaz said, “Huh? Why are you leaving?”
“I have…personal matters that need taken care of,” Kazumi answered. “I wanted to repay my debt to Nk before I left, and now that that’s done, it’s time I head off.”
Kazumi went back inside, and Khadaz de-fused. Nk then sat up and said, “She really thinks I’m going to stay here hen I know what she’s going to do?”
“What?! How long have you been awake?!” Khadaz said.
“Long enough,” Nk said. “Khadaz, it’s better you don’t get involved in this. You should just focus on your training.”
Nk went inside, and after a short while, Khadaz shrugged and said, “Meh…ignorance is bliss.”

Chapter 104: Terror 2 (Arrival at Death)

Kazumi glared at Nk, saying, “I told you not to follow me; we’re even now.”
“You’re going to hurt yourself,” Nk replied, “and I can’t let you do that.”
He had followed Kazumi into the Shadow Spire, and they were now in the room where Nk had seen the security videos. As they turned down a new corridor where Nk had not been, Kazumi asked, “Right…and why is it that you can’t let me get hurt?”
Nk muttered, “Uh…well, er…it’s because…it’s the gentlemanly thing to do, for a man to protect a lady.”
Kazumi looked over her shoulder and replied, “If you consider me a lady then your definition of the word must be pretty—“
“C’mon, don’t talk that way,” Nk interrupted. “I’m stubborn, I’m here, and I’m not turning back.”
Kazumi sighed, “Nk…this is something I have to do myself.”
“Now now, 127,” a voice said from the end of the hall, “don’t be so rude to our guest. I have all kinds of experiments in mind for this talented young lad.”
Kazumi fused with her Orb and spat, “Those will be tough to do when you’re dead!”
The voice replied, “I see you’re still using the Spirit I discovered. Spirit #607, Kira, 200 Fusion Energy, Element: Rahaga/Steel, Effect: Murderous Intent: When FE falls below 50% attack power is boosted by 30; this Spirit has the special ability to control the invisible power of Vectors. Discovered by the great genius in charge of the Shade-Gang Science Division 3 months ago, this Spirit is unique, one of a kind…and alive.”
Out of a door down the hall emerged Shadow Snake, and he said, “I was quite worried when I heard you went berserk, 127. After all, you are my greatest work.”
Nk said, “So you’re the sick freak who’s been experimenting on innocent people here?”
Shadow Snake turned to him and analyzed, “Nuvakuta Kazen, resident of Ta-Isle, best candidate for the next Fire-Lord. Firepower Level S, though using a Forbidden Flame drains all of it with no extra results. In possession of an Orb containing both an Omni and the last true Dread.”
“…This guy’s good,” Nk noted under his breath. He fused with Omni and shouted, “You don’t scare me, you vile evildoer! These despicable acts you have been committing shall come to a close this day!”
Shadow Snake chuckled, “Hm hm…no need to put on a show, Nuvakuta. I assume you just want to impress 127, but you’re both about to be locked up in isolated cages, so there’s no point in it.”
Nk held Virtue ready and said, “Shut up and prepare for battle!”
Kazumi put up a hand and said, “I told you, I have to do this myself!”
“I have no interest in fighting either of you,” Shadow Snake said. “If I don’t achieve better results soon, my employers will become impatient.”
He then pulled out a small device and clicked a button on it, and then Kazumi began to scream. Her hair changed to a dark red color, and she soon stopped screaming and turned to Nk, grabbing him with a Vector and throwing him through a wall into a lab.
“Ugh…what’d you do?” Nk demanded.
“I merely woke up Kira,” Shadow Snake replied. “She has now taken over 127 and is killing everything that moves…except for me, of course, since I have hidden my presence.”
Omni growled, “This man dares to call himself a scientist…Nuvakuta, I know that you do not wish to fight Kazumi, but in order to save her we shall have to disable her and then destroy Shadow Snake’s device.”
Nk was silent for a moment, and then began to glow with a Chikara and said, “You’re right, Omni…guide my blade and flame so that I can save her.”
Kazumi then also went into Perfect Fusion, and Shadow Snake said, “This is most interesting…the data we collected on Nuvakuta said he was never serious a day in his life. Perhaps he has become attached to 127…well, hopefully they won’t end up dead, else they’ll be useless to me.”
Kazumi used Vector Punch, but Nk blocked it and lashed out with Virtue. Kazumi blocked with her arm and used Dismember, cutting Nk off from Spirit of Dragon, and then she threw him away and used Vector Sweep. Nk was hit by the attack, and then used Dragonic Flame on his opponent.
Kazumi was about to attack again, but Nk knocked her down with Strike of Dragon and yelled, “Kazumi, snap out of it! I know you’re still in there!”
“It is no use, Nuvakuta,” Shadow Snake said as Kazumi used Vector Choke. “She can’t hear you.”
Kazumi then used Mind Crush, poisoning Nk enough to negate Omni’s Spirit of Light, and Nk said, “I don’t believe you…Kazumi’s will is too strong…to be completely drowned out by something of your doing.”
He then broke free and used Combo of Virtue, but then Shadow Snake said, “You have too much faith in others. I can’t wait to torture you until you finally see that.”
Kazumi then stood back up, and the Vectors began to circle around her. “Nuvakuta, beware!” Omni warned.
“Too late,” Shadow Snake said,
Kazumi then began unleashing all of her Vector attacks in rapid succession, beating Nk to the point where he felt the full force of every blow through the armor. The barrage continued for what seemed like an eternity, until finally the Vectors returned to Kazumi, and Nk lay battered and bruised against the wall, his Chikara nearly gone.
“You see now?” Shadow Snake said. “This is my project, mindless killing machines powered by Perfect Fusion. However, Perfect Fusion just isn’t strong enough; it’s not ‘Perfect’ at all, so my employers want me to perfect it for an army. But enough of that. By now you’re so weak that 127 can defeat you with her Decapitate attack.”
Kazumi walked towards Nk and stood before him, Vectors flying around her. She then lifted a hand and prepared to attack, but she was suddenly flung back by Virtue.
“Virtue’s Beginning,” Nk whispered, getting up. “I’m sorry Kazumi, but I will save you, and this is the only way.”
He then leaped up into the air faster than he should have been able to, and shouted, “Virtue’s End!”
He slammed the sword down on Kazumi, and her Chikara burst apart and merged with his. Kazumi’s fusion armor disappeared and she fell to her knees, and Nk asked, “Kazumi, are you alright?”
Kazumi muttered, “I’m still…not strong enough.”
“Are you kidding?” Nk replied. “You were holding back, and look how beat up I am!”
“Impossible!” Shadow Snake cried. “How could this happen?! Forget the experiments—you DIE for this, Nuvakuta!”
Nk glared at Shadow Snake, paralyzing him with just his gaze, and said, “I’m not ready to die yet. I still have to make you pay for your crimes.”
Nk walked towards Shadow Snake, who began backing down the hallway. Nk placed Virtue on his back and then held his hand open, creating a Sword of Blue Flames, and then his Firepower formed a sphere around him.
“I really hate it that you, of all people, are responsible for helping me overcome my weakness,” he said, stopping and holding the Sword of Blue Flames so that it was positioned to pierce. “But I suppose I should still thank you. However, I never was the nicest of people…so I don’t think I will. Forbidden Flame Combination: Meteor Sword Charge!”
Nk then rocketed down the hallway, plowing through Shadow Snake and smashing him into a wall. The sphere of fire vanished, and Nk said, “Guess I lied. I took it easy on you.”
Shadow Snake’s Orb was shattered, and he had a large cut in his shoulder. Kazumi stood watching, and thought, I still want my revenge, to kill him…but that would make me no better than him. I…thank you, Nk…I’m glad you came. I could learn a lot from your example.
Nk began to walk back towards his friend, but he suddenly felt a chill in the air. He turned around to see someone fused with a War Machine standing over Shadow Snake, saying, “You failed us, Shadow Snake…we told you what would happen if you failed.”
“P-please, have mercy!” Shadow Snake pleaded. “Forgive me, War Machine, sir, I just need another chance!”
War Machine said, “Mercy…forgiveness…second chances…our organization offers none of these things to a lowly servant such as yourself.”
He then lifted a hand and used Nebula Blazer, incinerating the scientist in an instant. “Hey, why’d you kill him?!” Nk shouted, shooting flames at the new arrival.
War Machine brushed them off like they were nothing, and said, “I see that Destroyer was right. Boy, do yourself a favor and let Dread take control. We want him in our organization, and it’ll be far less painful for you if we don’t have to force you to let him possess you.”
Before Nk could say anything, War Machine was gone. “…Let’s go back,” Nk said. “These nine days are going to go quickly, so we need to start training right away.”

Nine days later, the twelve children stood on the coast of Mutant-Isle, facing the Element-Lords, who were all wearing their uniforms.
Norscu looked at each of the children and said, “You’ve all made wonderful progress, and now you are ready. I am very proud of all of you.”
Out of the mist came an enormous mountain, and as Mutant-Isle floated towards it, Norscu continued, “Mutant-Isle will remain attached to the Mountain until the bridge system is deactivated, either by us if we succeed or—“
“Not ‘if’, WHEN,” Khadaz interrupted. “I don’t care how tough this guy is supposed to be or how haunted his house is, I guarantee you that everyone will be in and out in no time at all.”
Norscu stood there and smiled, thinking, He’s an Ikhav, alright.
The Mountain of Death and Mutant-Isle came parallel then, and a large metal bridge shot out and linked the two landmasses.
Amy noticed that Khadaz was shaking, and she grabbed his hand and told him, “It’s alright, Khadaz. Everyone’s a little afraid.”
Khadaz chuckled, “Yeah, I’m a bit nervous, but that’s not why I’m shaking. Honestly…I’m just having trouble containing my excitement.”
Everyone then fused with their Orbs, and Norscu shouted, “This is it! Let’s go!”
