Matoran Masks - Natural?, Or evolved dependence? Options

Okay, think about it this way. Most humans (at least the priveliged ones) spend practically all of their time outdoors in shoes. So when they go out without their shoes they hurt their feet on rocks, sticks, glass, whatever. So they're dependent on their shoes - without them, they're crippled.

See where I'm going with this?

Humans used to be more primitive, living in the wild with little clothes or shelter. Then they advanced these technologies, and look at us now. We're dependant on air conditioners, heaters, and all manner of clothing to survive the winter. We've become dependant and if those things were taken away, everyone living is a strongly seasonal area would die.

So. What if in the past Matoran didn't wear masks? Then they found a way of providing energy through masks, and everyone started wearing them. Because of this extra energy, little by little their bodies began naturally producing less and less excess energy. That explains why Matoran lapse into weakness and a coma-like state when their masks are removed for a certain amount of time - their bodies overload. More powerful beings, like Toa, still produce more energy and as such can fight off the effects longer. Think about it - Matoran can't survive without something artificial strapped to their faces. Seems like the've become pretty dependant to me.

I also believe (I know) I heard somewhere that Kanoka Disks were a fairly recent innovation on Metru Nui. So before them, there couldn't be any masks.
