You need to have a microphone for your computer first, and if you have one, it probably has software that came with it. You'd need to install the software into the computer before you can use the microphone, but once installed, using the microphone is pretty easy. You'd probably find your voice clips in a folder in "My Computer" that's probably in the files for the software you used to install the mic.

Well, yeah, first you'll need a microphone. That's important. If you have one or get one, plug 'er in - either it'll plug into a USB port or an analog port on the back or front of your computer - the port will be pink and the same size of a headphone jack (usually it's by a headphone jack if it's on the front). Some laptops have built in microphones.

Next you'll need a program to record sound. If you run Windows (Which you probably do. Check to see if you have a "start" menu. if you don't you probably don't run windows. If you do, Windows comes with a functional, easy-to-use sound recorder, but it doesn't have many features. It's called Sound Recorder (what a creative name tongue.gif). It'll be in the start menu under accessories and entertainment. Here's a picture of what it looks like:

click It may also look like this.

If you can't find it in the Start menu, go to Start, click run, and type "sndrec32" it should pop up. Click the record button and get going.

If you don't run windows or you want one with more features, download Audacity. It's free, no tricks, no 30-day limit. Just download and enjoy.
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

If you still can't record tell me and I'll walk you through it

@CHTrilogy: Given that McAfee doesn't provide replacement files up for downloading, you can't do anything about it until you get the original disk. Or if you got it online, you can try calling the support line and ask for help there.

I use a two-year-old windows XP, works fine usually. Recently, however, I have begun to start needing to plug it in to charge more, and today it told me my battery can only store 25% of its original charge capacity. What do I do?

I'm assuming that you're talking about a laptop. Since you have used your machine for about two years it's normal for the battery to start losing it's capacity. If you can find the right battery, you can try replacing the battery, or take it to a repair shop and tell them to replace the battery and whatnot.

Manufacturer : Gateway, Inc.
Mainboard : Intel D845HV
Chipset : Intel i845
Processor : Intel Pentium 4 @ 1500 MHz If it's a single core, 1.5 GHz is not worth it. Have a 2.6 GHz one or a 1.5 GHz dual core one.
Physical Memory : 256 MB (1 x 256 SDRAM ) At least 1GB, but you can buy extra RAM later at cheaper prices
Video Card : Nvidia Corp GeForce2 MX 100/200 (DDR) [NV11DDR] This is enough but I recommend a GeForce FX+
Hard Disk : ST320410A (20 GB) Bump this to 40GB
Hard Disk : STECH (320 GB)
CD-Rom Drive : LITE-ON LTR-16102B
Monitor Type : Hewlett Packard v70s - 16 inches
Network Card : Intel Corporation 82801BA/CAM (ICH2/3) LAN Controller
Operating System : Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.01.2600 Service Pack 2
DirectX : Version 9.0c

Comments in bold.

Having an operating system preloaded is always worse than wiping the drive and installing it yourself. The reason being that manufacturers are notorious for having various "free" (usually for the first 15 days or something) programs spammed all over the system, thus bogging it down and generally being a pain.

Plus manufacturers usually aren't that great at optimization or stability. I seem to recall Dell shipping a system with a quad core (Q6600) that ran 94C. Of course that CPU is rated at 62C (under the B3 stepping it shipped with). The one I built runs at 36-38C. tongue.gif

Buying (or far better yet, building) a computer that comes with Vista SP1 is fine, even if it's preinstalled, I'd just recommend wiping the drive and putting a clean install on before using it. Just remember to reload the drivers once it's done. smile.gif

Ah, I see....

I should be able to reinstall Vista after I did that, wouldn't I?

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1, Works, and Office Home and Student 2007 ( 60-day trial)
McAfee Internet Security Suite 2008 (60-day trial)
Adobe Acrobat Reader 8.1
eSobi
Acer Arcade Live
NTI Media Maker
Acer Empowering Technology: Acer eRecovery Management, Acer ePerformance Management, Acer eDataSecurity Management

That's the stuff it comes preloaded with... it's an Acer, so yeah.

@keyblade: If you want Vista, having it preloaded is always better, but if you want another OS, I suggest a new HDD. But only because formatting a preloaded HDD can be annoying sometimes.

@Toa Mahri Inika: You have bad internet connecting or your ISP blocked the websites. It has nothing to do with the websites themselves.

Get Firefox and install Adblocker.

My question is, my laptop overheats. A lot. To the point where I can't put my hand by the vents. This has caused my video games to run slowly, and the overall performance to drop. I think it might be Norton Internet Security, because I've heard that it makes the computer work more. I've tried a cooling pad, but it didn't work. A window fan works okay, but they're too clunky. I'm using a small portable fan right now, but I'd prefer something better. Is there anyway to cool my laptop down?

foremost, it's a laptop.

ouch.

I did have a PC that was overheating a lot, shutting down etc., turns out it was the problem of the.. video card? It had corrupt drivers causing the onboard fan to spin too much. So you can deffo update drivers, least you can do. I'm not sure what you can do with a laptop though.. additional heatsinks? wacko.gif

Hi well let me get into it....

Well yesterday I was searching through google for some stuff, I click on a couple of links and one was not what it said it was.
the link took me to a page where it said something like "Access denied" "top secret".
The window closed within seconds of it opening and a new small one opened with nothing on it and notice pop up said something like "virus detected".
I was panicked and it told me to run a scan on my computer, so I said YES! It scanned it and it said I had spyware adware and like trojan something.
I tried to install something that was supposed to get rid of it but it wouldn't work. So......

- I don't care if it was real top secret stuff or fake

-the whole process of virus scan for windows xp had the pop notices look I was running on Windows, but I don't I have a Mac.

- I cleared My temporary internet files on firefox with Tools-clear personal data.

- Am I overreacting?

-what should I do?
That popup wasn't something you wanted to click. You should've just killed it. What exactly did you install? Something the popup directed you to?

Hey, my new computer didn't come with a Vista CD, so I was wanting to know which things I absolutely need to backup on a burnable DVD to ensure that the computer will be fine if it crashes.

Edit: I can't connect to the internet through Firefox, but I can through IE... I don't recall changing any network connections, unless someone else did. Any ideas?

If you don't have the original OS DVD...mm...all of it. tongue.gif The operating system spreads various entries throughout the system, so although you can easily copy the core files (in the 'Windows' folder), other files and registry entries would get left out. In theory it might run off that folder alone (doubt it though), but there'd be so many missing files, registry links, etc. that pretty much everything else would cease to function.

I would use a CD/DVD RW for backing up your vital documents, saved games, etc. and an external (or internal, preferably RAIDed) hard drive for full system backups. Just make sure that when you back up the whole system that it's in good working order. No point in backing up to a nearly broken OS.

Any particular error popping up? I've found that that game is very finicky with a number of different hardware configurations (often simply crashing the system), so I'd be suspicious of that. If it is indeed hardware related, it's likely the video card. Do you happen to know what graphics card you have in the system?

It's just a bunch of compatibility/configuration issues with Game Maker games. I myself can't run Game Maker games on one of my XPs but I can on my other XP and Linux; which are all set to triple-boot on the same HDD. The severity of the crashing also varies. Sometimes the loading bar appears, fills up and the game doesn't start. Sometimes, the game can reboot the whole system after the loading bar fills up.

QUOTE(Zeddy @ Aug 17 2008, 09:36 AM) *
Hey, everyone.

I'd just like to know, what video file does an iPod accept? 'Coz I have .flv files, and they're not being accepted. How do I convert them?

(I know, it's similar to the previous question. tongue.gif )

There's a site called Mediaconverter.org that can convert videos and audio to just about any format you want. It also extracts audio tracks from videos. It's really easy to use. I like it better than Vixy because you don't get the Vixy thing at the end of your video.

The problem with those sites is that the quality drops a lot compared to doing it manually, especially when extracting audio. Those sites also need to to upload your file to the server, then you redownload your file, which can take a while if you have a bad connection.

Renaming files or throwing it in a good converter such WinAVI or VirtualDub is highly reccomended for quality and speed.

In addition to a DVD Drive, you'd also need the right codecs and players. Downloading VLC Player will take care of almost everything.

Try pressing Ctrl+N. If that still doesn't work, uninstall and reinstall it.

That scroll down to Firefox and click Change/Remove.

After that, download the installer for Firefox 3.0.1 from the Mozilla and run it.

Something's probably wrong with the configuration of your OS.

If you can open more windows with Firefox 2, then go ahead and get it.

The Original Robo says:

"HELP!!! For some reason, I cannot access BZPower or Google from my laptop. Every other website works fine, just those two speficially. Even the IM works (this is how Teebert got this message). I've checked the Firewalls and tried restoring my computer to an earlier day and nothing has helped. Any suggestions?"

EDIT: He started using a different browser, everything's fine now.

Since official topics cannot die...
Okay here's the problem.
I have a laptop, but I am used to using external hardware. And so it happens that my external mouse is starting to go haywire!
Does anyone now any way I could fix the thing?
There is a friend of mine who told me something about a program but I'm not sure.
In the meantime, my keyboard also has to be reset every time I turn on the computer...

I doubt a program would do any good. Define "haywire". Is it overly jumpy or just not working at all or...?

And likewise what do you mean by "reset" the keyboard. Unless you're running a very specialized (and expensive) keyboard like a G50, there's nothing to reset.

Erm... they might be broken... check your Keyboard and Mouse settings....

Okay, so my newer computer shut off during a storm (we turned it off, but weren't able to reach the power cord to unplug it), and after it came back on it's having some problems.

Firstly, I just need to know where I can find (if it exists) a file or folder containing all my Firefox information. The name it could be under, for instance.

I also need to see if I can get my Steam info off (my games from there are the Orange Box and Spore Creature Creator), and move it to the other computer.

We don't have a Vista disk to boot up from, but we do have several backup DVDs that we made. We just need to get out important data off.

First off, the storm probably had nothing to do with it. You'd have a *lot* more trouble with it if it got hit by a surge. Namely fried components, or at least a shot power supply. Plus if you have a surge protector (found in pretty much every power strip or UPS device), the chances of any storm damage are next to nothing, as the protector will simply blow the fuse before letting the computer take a hit. Oh, and if you can't reach the wall socket, just unplug the cord from the power supply in the computer. Does the exact same thing. tongue.gif

What sorts of information are you looking for? When it comes to stuff like add-ons, I'd just redownload them, as there's generally little customization that you wouldn't be able to repeat easily.

The beauty of Steam is that you don't need to transfer your info as it's all online. Simply install it on another computer and all of your stuff is ready to go, aside from either re-downloading/installing the data, which you'd have to do with any other program anyway. I have and use my Steam account on several computers interchangeably.

Why don't you have a Vista disc to work off? o_0

Ok, this is interesting...

Last year, when Still Feels Goods, the latest Rascal Flatts CD came out, there was a promo by Wal-Mart that gave out three additional RF songs... So, I got that. Naturally, I want to play the whole CD, including those three WMA file format songs. So, because I hadn't listened to them since I got my comp upgraded, it said about the licenses, so I went "Sure, update," But... It doesn't update it on WMP or Winamp... In fact, Winamp flat out says it can't update the license... Any help on how I can listen to the songs?
