Fortunately, the hungry Rahi in that universe were all incredibly tame, and they let the Matoran do whatever they wanted, which is to say, eat a few and have them help build houses. And then they made a huge Rahi sacrifice to Mata Nui, and he miraculously came back, and then protected the universe and himself from being destroyed.
