Bbc#53: 1st Prize, Titan Mata Nui Review! Options

As I woke this morning I was greeted by a pleasant surprise at my door. A large box with lego on the front. I knew it must be my prize from the BBC contest.

I quickly opened it up to find Mata-Nui staring back at me.

Presentation
From the design of the box to the instruction manual, these are the first things you see before building the set.

First off, the box is HUGE! Almost the same size as Axalara T9's box. The size doesn't seem necessary because as soon as you open it up you'll notice that both the pieces and the instruction books only take up a small corner of the inside.

Mata Nui has a nice large image, he is in an action preparing to battle an unseen foe. The pose lets you see all details of the figure other than the life counter feature placed on his back. Over in the corner you can see a picture of the legend reborn dvd, it has the old cover that we first saw long ago. over off in the upper right corner you can see the silhouette of Glatorian along with the giant leg piece sitting next to them. To the right you see Mata Nui's beetle symbol.

On the back of the box we have another image of Mata Nui standing proudly, to the right we have images of the other summer figuers including Mata Nui's canister form. On the top there are images of Mata Nui's features. On the bottom we have some nice screen shots of the up coming movie (I believe we have already seen them though).

on the bottom of the box there is the old box of Lego's legal information that we've all come to know.
Mata Nui's Bio code is also very random and has no connection with his name in any way, like all the sets this year.



Building
Half the fun is had building the set. How fun is it to build and how easy or challenging is it?

The box comes with two instruction Booklets and three bags full of pieces.

Building the torso was a lot of fun, it was surprisingly a lot different then Takanuva's and actually kind of original, unlike the rest of his limbs which were total copy's of Takanuva's colored in yellow.
That's right yellow.
Unfortunately there is no gold other then the Inika thigh armor (3) and the Kanohi Ignika, which is the same mold as the 08 mask.

He also traded his blue eyes to green

Mata Nui's hands are also a fun build, each finger can individually move, and each has joints. Along with new hands comes new weapons, Now Mata Nui has tools that are actually befitting for the ruler of the matoran universe. He comes with a large sword made from a Jaller mahri sword and a Scarab beetle-like shoulder pad featured on Mats Nui's Toa canister brother. His wimpy shield is also replaced with a huge claw-like thornax blaster.

One thing you may notice is that Mata Nui's color scheme is all over the place. He has Keetongu orange, mellow yellow, 06 gold, silver, and black. A big difference then his Toa counterpart which had only Black and Keetorange. The Color isn't bad just odd, nothing really seems out of place and if your the kind of person who likes to play with your sets you probably won't even pay much attention to it.

I didn't really pay attention to any new parts while building the set, but I do know that there are a lot of parts recolored, including new mellow yellow Mantax claws and Bitil wings (edit: not new, they were first found on yetrax, sorry 'bout that). A great pickup for any Mocest out there.

Playability
The other half of the fun is in playing with the set. How well does the set function and is it enjoyable to play with?

Playing with Mata Nui is great, he is very poseable (sp?) with 21 different points of articulation. As said earlier his fingers can bend and move individually, his legs have the same pistons found on other titan sets since 06.
He can pull off pretty much any pose that you want him to have. He also has some pretty cool pistons connecting his legs to his torso and they look pretty cool when moving his legs.

Mata Nui is a giant, he towers over Brutaka and Takanuva and completely dwarfs any Toa standing next to him, maybe the huge box was supposed to represent this.

Final Thoughts
Once it's all said and done, how does the set stack up? Should I get it?

Pros
What's to like?

• He's Huge!
• awesome hands
• can be posed in almost any position
• Cool weapons

Cons
What's not to like?

• odd color scheme
• not enough armor on arms
• recycled limbs

I would diffidently recommend this to any Mocist, especially if you missed out on Keetongu. Keep on watching the shelves for this guy, he should be out soon ( I think)

The design has grown on me a bit - seems a little less blocky and lopsided - but the colour seems even worse now. The Keetorange and mata yellow and gold all clash together horribly.

Good parts, though.

I wish LEGO would leave legendary characters alone if the sets are going to be crud. This happened with Karzahni, too. I wish we could get a model like the 2003 Makuta. He had flaws, but was only $20 and had an excellent color scheme and solid build.

Neck's still too long, design is awful, and color scheme is barf-worthy. Doesn't look like the designers put much effort into this set. BUT, I will probably still buy it. Why? For two reasons:

1) the gold mask
2) to rebuild it the way I think Mata Nui should look like.

I wonder why the box is so large.

I'd also like to point out that, unlike a good majority, I never bashed Titan Mata Nui when the first pictures came out. I knew his awesomeness would prevail over everyone, and I was right.

Though I still think he looks kinda messy, that the lack of gold is still disturbing, and the hands look weird but are probably cool, he's grown on me. However, I'll still stick to the canister as it by some strange coincidence contains more pieces I would use for MoCing than this.

The color scheme is still pretty cringe-worthy, but he actually looks a lot better than the first picture we saw. Plus, Gold Ignika makes him a must-buy.
