Yesterday, I was getting ready to go to game stop and my dogs started barking at the side door. I knew "It was here....."

Here's my review of the Kaxium V3.

Presentation
From the design of the box to the instruction manual, these are the first things you see before building the set.

The box itself is fairly large, about as big as Takanuva's was last year. The box shows a fairly bland picture of Kirbraz and Scodonius with the latter shooting at something for the sake of shooting. Also on the box we have the expected "BIONICLE" logo with name "Kaxium V3", the set number and age group, a small advertisement for bionicle.com,
and a strange blurb showing off the fact that it can separate. All in all it's your typical bionicle box, but it does do its job of getting your attention.

The back of the box, however, is much more interesting, in my opinion. On the back of the the box we have an enlarged picture of the blurb (which makes me wonder why they put the blurb on the front in the first place.) We also have an advertisement for the "SUPER DUPER COOL ACTION GAME", an image demonstrating the connection feature of the two vehicles, an image on how to shoot the launcher, and some advertisements for the baranus and thornatus sets. Unlike most set this year, there's no Bionicle: The Legend Reborn advertisement to be seen on the back. They put it on the side instead. tongue.gif

Now, I know the box isn't what you came here for so let's move on shall we?

Building
Half the fun is had building the set. How fun is it to build and how easy or challenging is it?

The building process isn't the most interesting in the world. The pilots of course took about 2.18 seconds to build but, as all of you who bought vehicles in the past know, the pilot is not the reason you bought the set, right?

No! Don't worry, I'll save you!

Well that was the easiest resuscitation I've ever done.

Once you move onto the vehicle, however, the build takes a... strange turn.
The vehicle's design and build is unlike any I've seen in a bionicle set (save for Rockoh T3.) the build consists of a wierd H-shaped piece and building on to it from there.

The build is reminiscent of the technic sets of old. Not the good ones you remember, the wierd ten dollar ones you got as stocking stuffers at christmas time. The big bike has a good build though, it's very sturdy and can take a beating. I actually, haven't seen a good matoran vehicle like this since the gukko and pewku sets from 2003.
The build is very straightforward and you should be done with it in twenty minutes if you don't have distractions.

Is it ready yet? No.

That's for the big bike. The small bike is almost not worth building. The small bike's frame is just a bunch of technic beams put together in a very unimaginative way.

Cool! A skateboard!

WHY YOU LITTLE! Ahhhhhh!

Though it's not the best build, it's a build that'll keep you interested. You should have a fun time building it.

Don't even think about.

Set Design
Now that the set is complete, we can critique how it looks from every angle. New or interesting pieces can also be examined here.

As I said before the design is very sturdy despite it's gaps and flaws. The main bike is very sleek and streamlined, it's overall style reminds me more of a drag racer than a bike.

One of the things I like about it is the fact that it's low to the ground. Of coarse that does nothing for it's turn ratio and makes it horrible in uneven terrain. No motocross for this bike. Something about it that some of you perfectionists out there won't enjoy is that it's gap heavy. The kind of gaps that seem to say to you "Fillllllllllll meeeeee....". You can't really tell at first glance but look underneath it and you'll see what I mean.

Now let's move onto the other bike.

The small bike isn't very exciting. It's built from the last third of the pieces in total. Despite this it manages to keep with the consistency of "very sturdy". You can ram the small bike full force at a wall with little to no damage taken. The reasons I keep saying things along the lines of "sad little bike" is the way scodonius grabs the handle bars is unrealistic and looks like his wrists are broken and the thornax launcher looks thrown on and out of place (come to think of it, aren't all the vehicles this year like that?)
In my opinion, your better of taking apart the small bike and using it to revamp the bigger one.

Now your probably thinking "At least it has new parts, right?" Well let me put it this way.

Though it's not as bad as you think. The helmets on the vehicle pilots this year are dual sided so they can be put two different ways.

I think that alone should help you mocists out tremendously.

Playability
The other half of the fun is in playing with the set. How well does the set function and is it enjoyable to play with?

The set is very fun to play with actually. The fact that these are land vehicles, they're easier to play with on the ground because that's where they were ment to be, unlike the vehicles of last year where all you can do is make them sit on their landing gear. Even though I hate the small bike, the two together are very fun to play with as you can keep them together to fight or split them apart to have races with your friend.

So whether your doing stunts with it, or just displaying it, you should have a great time with it.

Final Thoughts
Once it's all said and done, how does the set stack up? Should I get it?

All in all I really enjoyed this set and I think you will too. For a set like this the thirty dollar price tag may seem steep but I honestly think you'll have more fun with this then any of the other vehicles this year, so I think it's worth it.

Even then, there's always the pieces for your collection.

So I hope you enjoyed my review and found it informative.

Also, the set has been revamped already so I can't offer extra pictures, sorry. sad.gif

Enjoy.

While I disagree on the sidecar part, it was a pretty good review. I'll be sure to pick this one up.

Also, congratz on your prize. smile.gif

Thanks for the review! Kaxium, however, still doesn't seem too good to me. Congrats on the prize though. smile.gif

Good review happy.gif. Still not fond of the set overall, though. It just looks like so many of the MoCs that come out of BBC every other week. Probably not going to spend any cash on this one.

I ordered this along with the Baranus a few days ago on S@H. i might make the sidecar into a gourney that can drag hurt glatorians/ agori out of the arena.

Denmark?

I enjoyed the review, it was interesting seeing the Agori working on the vehicle itself. It's strange, on the box, the set looks absolutely flawless, but in person, it has alot of gaps and jumbled parts.
Oh well, I'll probably get it any way because A. It's not too expensive, and 2. The collector side of me really wants it tongue.gif .

Oh no get the kaxium first, the cendox is too flimsy in the front, anyway overall the kaxium is sturdier and you get four sets in one!

Well, this is a great review! It looks much better then when I first saw it, and it's a two in one set, so I am looking forward to getting it!

Nice. The pictures are actually manageable for once - I thank you from the bottom of my heart for that! tongue.gif

I'm awfully surprised by how bland it is. They sure had me fooled with the Matoran and the angle making it look bigger and fuller... Still, it's on the cheaper end of the scale, and you get what you pay for. I'm sure this set will be perfect for those ones who can't shell out as much as some. smile.gif

Indeed, I concur in full. "Bland" was my first thought when I was looking through the review images, so it's nice to see I'm not alone in that train of thought. In fact, in that sense it's kind of remniscient of Mazeka; both look awesome on the box art, but reviews show they're bland in person, and the fact that both are driven by silver-helmed Av-Matoran builds can't be just a coincidence. Regardless, great review, and thanks for keeping the images small; my computer appreciates it.

Cool. Thanks for the review and congrats on your BBC. I have liked the Kaxium since Toy Fair, but after seeing this pictures, I think I'd rather hold off on it and put this money towards titan Mata Nui.

Aside from the sidecar, this thing is pretty neat. Sort of reminescent of the Destral Cycle, only held together better. (For those of you who build the DC, you know what I'm talking about. Come on, a central support that was a Midak?!?!)

I'm not personally wanting this set, but I'd definatly reccomend it for some younger MOCists out there, as well as anyone who like interchangable helmets. That's an awesome feature there, all dorkiness aside.

I think I still hold for Thornatus as far as I am getting only one vehicle this year.

Anyway, good review. I's always nice to have a sneakpeek on new sets.

Thanks for reviewing. I'm still debating whether or not to buy the Kaxium, and this review has raised some interesting points for me. Thanks for taking the time to give your thoughts!

Ditto.I'm wondering if I should get this,or Cendox.Cendox is cheaper, and still has the same helmet as Kirbraz/Scodonius......But Kaxium looks cooler....
But I did make a upgraded Destral cycle.......Grrr........Also,'XOX,my Destral cycle is modified a little, but the Midak is fine as support.

EDIT:I've settled for all the Legends,Cendox,Baranus, and Skopio....I'll get Kaxium and Thornatus if they go on sale.Also,-Tilius-,Do you think Kaxium is "flat"?

There have been worse sets, but the uninspiring build and generic figures (which are basically the same figure twice) make this one of the less appealing vehicles for me. A Technic build is a good thing, though.

I'm still siding with Cendox here.

Thanks for the review, really changed my opinion on it. Might pick it up after all, and congrats on winning!

The Kaxium looks like a cool set. My brother and I were thinking about splitting it(me getting the sidecar), but I'm not sure if my half is worth the money.

Could you post a picture of Kirbraz being entirely black and Scodonius being entirely shades-of-blue?
