Ok, I have seen countless topics come up about PE - first, let me say if you do not know what PE is then READ THIS.
I want all of you to know this.. THERE IS NO GUARANTEED WAY TO GET MORE PE, SO DON'T ASK FOR IT. If there was a guaranteed way to get a PE boost - don't you think everyone would do it until they were full? But you see only a small group of members (other than Admins, Mods, and some ST members) that has a full PE bar. I see people saying "I helped somebody yesterday, but did not get a PE boost." My answer to them is "So what?" If you are doing things ONLY to get PE, you will never get it. We can tell if you are helping out only to try to get a boost, trust me - its easy to spot. And if your only goal is to get more PE then you need to re-think what you are doing, that is not what you should be doing. Now, you may be asking yourself whats the point of helping out? Well, there are plenty of reasons.

PROTO ENERGY BASICS How many Proto Points are there, and where does it start? How can you see how much you have? There are eleven positions (-5 to +5), and everyone starts at 0, which is the middle. To see how much you have, right-click on your PE, go to properties and look at the end of the address; it will have (-5 to +5).gif. Also, you can check this: [ -5 | -4 | -3 | -2 | -1 | http://www.bzpower.com/forum/html/karma/0.gif | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 ] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What is at each end of the bar? When it's empty, you get Suspended; when it's full, you become an Outstanding BZP Citizen (OBZPC) and recieve the benefits of that group. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Who gives the boosts? Administrators, Global Moderators, and Forum Leaders can give the boost or shots to your PE. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Can Mods give themselves Proto? Moderators are awarded with full proto when they are promoted if they are not already full. Moderators can be subject to proto drops, however if the Admins have a problem with their performance, proto deductions isn't the way that it's dealt with. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How do you know if your Proto has changed? You will usually get a PM from the person who modified it, or the reason will be in yours or the person's post in the topic it happened (if it was a topic-related reason). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- YOUR LOSS IS NO ONE'S GAIN What are the ways to get your Proto lowered? PE may be decreased for stuff like (but not limited to)...
Can you lose PE because you accidentally revived a topic? It depends ... this decision would be made by the Mods of the forum that the topic was revived in. These decisions are made on a case-by-case basis. The consequences vary, with everything from warnings to PE loss or post deduction. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Do you lose PE for critisizing other's work? It depends: if your criticism is not helpful and even hurtful for the creators of art/fiction/MOC, you could very well lose PE. On the other hand, constructive reviews that can provide useful tips and point out some aspects that need work, while also stressing the good points, are always welcome. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Could you regain Proto if your computer messed up, causing you to multi-post? Not necessarily because we do not know if this is the actual case or not. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Does PE, in any way, affect whether someone gets banned/suspended/restricted? Sometimes, yes. Moderators and Administrators know why members have lost/gained proto energy, and that will usually affect their desicions towards certain members. Also, contrary to popular belief, moderators may suspend members without removing all of their proto energy, if the circumstances require it. You are also suspended if you are dropped past the limit mainly because that's the last straw, and you obviously merit suspension. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you become unsuspended and lose PE again, do you become suspended again? If the Admins are tired of your actions, you may get banned. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEWS Don't we get a Proto Boost for sending in news? Not necessarily; it depends. If it does not make the front page, you do not get a boost. If it is an exclusive tip, as in something out of the ordinary, and you are listed as a source, you just might. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Can you go from -5 to +5 just by sending in news? Yes, it is possible. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PREMIER MEMBERSHIP Do you get a boost for Premier Membership? Yes, look in the Reference Desk PE Topic. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When you are no longer Premier, does the Proto disappear? No, Proto only goes down as punishment. You're not being punished if your Premier Membership runs out and you don't renew, so your Proto won't be affected by not staying Premier. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Does my PE go up if I renew my Premier Membership? Not necessarily, you could renew and find out.  -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Isn't becoming Premier the same as buying PE? It's not that simple. You could buy a year-and-a-half of Premier and get all your PE, but you could also lose it in that amount of time. Someone who sends in money for PE, because they lost PE, might just lose that PE too. Also contrary to popular belief, "buying proto" isn't a cheap way of earning proto. Think about it, you are giving your own money to BZP as a donation, whether ot not you want it to be. Donating money is just as hard than reporting topics. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HELPING OUT AROUND THE "HOUSE" Is helping someone the only way to earn PE? No, but it IS the main way to get PE. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Do you gain PE for helping with avatars and stuff like that? Making avatars in a shop will not get you more PE, but if you help members with how to use them, etc., maybe you will. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Do you gain any Proto for pointing out a lot of bad things going on? Possibly, but pointing out a lot of bad things will help the site run better, thus, increasing enjoyment. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Are rewards for advertising proto and post boosts? Yes and no. Normally you are rewarded with posts, but if you kept giving many, many reports on them, then you might get lucky. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THINGS YOU MAY WANT TO KNOW BUT ARE AFRAID TO ASK Can you refer someone for a Proto Boost? If you feel someone has helped out enough to be acknowledged, you can make a Moderator aware of it. But that doesn't mean the member is guaranteed to receive a PE boost. Those decisions are made by the Mods and Admins themselves, at their discretion. And, contrary to some rumor, these reccomendations are often taken seriously. I know cases where members have been rewarded after being pointed out for a boost. But don't push it, we'll know if they deserve one or not; don't think you and your friends will be able to get eachother's proto boosted up just because you start recomending eachother. You're more than likely get proto removed if you try to cheat the system. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Could somebody make a chart on how much PE you get for certain stuff? No, because there is no guaranteed way to gain Proto. The Admins and Mods make these decisions on a case-by-case basis, so a chart wouldn't be possible. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How are there normal members with full PE? Their accounts need to be modified manually by the administrators; if you have full PE, or you see another member w/full proto, but they've not been upgraded to OBZPC yet, you should PM a Support Team member with a link to your/their profile. Your account should be upgraded within a few days.  Restricted and Suspended Members don't get that member group either. Extra punishment, you might say. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What do I do if I have full PE and have not become an OBZPC? Contact a Forum Assistant and let him/her take care of the rest, as stated above. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Do you need full PE to become an Moderator? Nope. It's just that once you become a Moderator your PE is automatically upped to full. And just in case you don't know how to become a Moderator, read this Ref Desk topic. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If for some reason you still have a question then post it - but just make sure you read what I put up. There's no sense in asking an already answered question. Any question not related to Proto Energy should be searched for in the FAQ, then asked in the New Member Q&A if it's not found there, unless it has nothing to do with BZP, then don't ask it there either. Well I don't think PE is a big deal really. It dosen't really help you. But I like the idea that you get rewarded if you help keep Bzp clean and orderly. I try to keep Bzp nice because it has given so much to me and I want to give something back and that's why I'm becoming a Premeir Member.

I don't beg for PE. If I ever do get a boost, I will be glad and surprised. So far in my time at
 , I have asked GaliGee to raise the PE of rcxmaster, because he found some images of cereal I needed for my cereal boxes. So he got a boost. I help others because it's right, not for PE.

Proto Energy is like a Boy Scout badge. You can get a badge for helping an elder cross the street. You're not getting money, candy, or toys. You get a medal showing you -helped- willingly. I'm cool...I'm helpful!" lol...I could care less if I get PE, because PE is only recognition for the act--if you do the act, that's the important thing. Heh heh heh, this is more in response to what AA mentioned, but: I have actually got PMs about if I could get somebody to be a mod! All newbs, but ME? I find that weird.
Asking for PE, now that's just low. "Hey KK, can I get a Proto boost?" *kicking noises* "ow!" Ya'd think people would be more subtle than that. Wanna know something bad? I helped a lot of newbies by PMing them for reasons such as helping them get avatars or sigs or when I see a member who hasn't posted I PM them asking if they need help. If they say yes I send them the Information and I don't care if I get PE or not cause I'm just tring to be helpful .

Arent you supposed to get a proto boost for news?
I recently sent in news but I did not get a proto boost... I am not worried about it-I was just wondering if you are supposed to get proto for news, thats all
