7654 Droids Battle Pack Review(Pics will be added later)
THE BOXThe the most superficial part of any LEGO product, but the one that often determines whether or not the set is a success or failure. The 30th anniverary box. Well, I must say, it stood out from other Lego sets when I saw it on the shelf. For a set of it's price the box is a lot smaller than most others, so they needed to tightly pack all of the set on the front, which they did to great effect, what with the lasers and explosions in the background.
The actual style of the new boxes: Well, you've got your now-standard Vader mask on the top-right coner with a red '30' next to it, which looks pretty cool. The line that separates the picture from the top border looks nice as well, more flashy than last year's straight line. The white 'Star Wars' text looks good with the red border, it suits the box design and colours well.
The back simply shows the minifigs included (however all of the Droids are shown with blasters, when only two of them have blasters in the actual set), and the other five Star Wars sets in it's release wave.
But enough about the box.
WHAT'S IN THE BOX?So you've bought it and taken it home (or at least made it to the car), punched the perforated tabs and dump out the contents. What do you get for your money?Three bags of parts, and a manual. 'Nuff said.
THE BRICKSHere's where we start to cut to the heart of the matter. You didn't buy this box for all the glossy booklets & creative artwork. You want to know about the LEGO bricks & bits that are included, and what (if any) new & interesting parts you'll find inside. Here's also where I'll talk about any new and/or interesting pieces that you will encounter.Well. This set isn't really about the bricks, or the build. It's about the Droids, hence the name of the set. But there are a few interesting parts which I will cover here.
The most interesting part for me was the cone-shaped piece the Droid carrier pilot goes in. It's not really anything special, but it's still pretty cool. Like I said, the set's not about the bricks.
There aren't really any other interesting parts, but there's a nice supply of good MOCing parts that might come in handy.
BUILDING EXPERIENCEWhat can you expect while putting this model together? The building goes fairly quicly. First you build the Droids, then the STAP, then the carrier.
The Droid are awesome as usual, but there's still the gripe with the whole blaster holding thing, however it's not an issue with the Super Battle Droids as they don't carry blasters.
The STAP has a very nice and sleek design, much better than the original. However, some of it, like the original, is built into the stand, so you can't remove it. But this model is probably one of the highlights of the set.
The carrier has a smooth design also, with the big slope bricks at the back. There is a two-stud gap between the bricks to allow for the Droids to stand on the vehicle, and each Droid space is separated by a 1x2 grill piece. There are six spaces in total, but only five are used by Droids to allow room for the two regular Droids' blasters. The pilot of the vehicle is stuck inside the cone piece, which looks awkward at first, but you get used to it quickly. The cockpit has two cannons attached to the bottom section, which are connected by two teching pins. I'm not really big on pins though. The cockpt section can also move side-to-side slightly. Overall, a nice craft.
PLAYING EXPERIENCESo you've got the model together, but is it more like playing with a block of wood or an interactive toy?Well, you're not going to build an army to look at it, are you?
This set is high in the playability area. The Droids are, like I said, the main feature here. They're great for playing around with, gunning down imaginary Clones (for those of you who can't find a Clone pack yet, like me

), and making cool battle scenes.
The STAP has an extremely high swoosh factor. Definitely fun to play with.
And the carrier. Quite fun to swoop down on Battle scenes and deploy troops.
It can also be effectively combined with a carrier from another of these sets to hold six Super Battle Droid while the other hold four Droids and their blasters, which I plan to do when I get another of these sets.
Overall a good set for playing with.
OVERALLHere's where it all boils down to whether the model is worth your money and time or not.Well, it's pretty expensive for a smallish set, but seven Droid is seven Droids. And seven Droids plus two vehicles is well worth $20 AU. (And it's even more worth it if you get it reduced!)
But since this set doesn't have much appeal if you don't like Droids, I don't recommend it in that case. However, pretty much every other aspect of this set is good, so I definately recommend this set, especially if you like Droids.
Overall, I rate this set 9.5/10. Very nice indeed.
