Sorry 'bout that... lookaround.gif

It's a good idea, but how would it work? And what would set it apart from this topic?
Cool-Aid
A premier member could do the same thing as the MOC club, we could pm each other, have a list of members in a blog, are purpose, and other things about it. B the way, thanks Ladon!

This Writer's Guild of BZP idea seems cool. I'm looking forward to it. And where do you guys take those "scores" for characters?
Cool-Aid
On the 16th page Ice Dino Land, the last few post should have a link that says Mary Sue Litmus Test. Anyway, we still need the premier who can advertise in his blog.

I'm finally gonna finish my novel this summer. And somebody PM me if this Writers Guild thing gets off the ground, sounds like fun.

(Also would appreciate reviews on the story in my sig) [/shameless grubbing]

I could be that Premeir. I have it until March something next year, and if you have ever been in my blog I barely update the thing.

....so long as it's not dinosaurs created by bioengineering per se, then yeah, a Jurassic Park-like scenario would work. So long as it's not EXACTLY like Jurassic Park. (instead of having wildly inaccurate Velociraptors as the cunning villains, why not completely accurate Utahraptors? They're bigger and deadlier, and they're not the size of a chicken in real-life)

Is Airloft also switching from 3rd to 1st person when talking about Airloft?

I have a few riddles. I guess I'll write them down before I forget.

8 shall ride the lightning wave
But only 7 shall ever return.
He who shall dare to try
Shall only crash and burn.

Notes: The lightning wave is a natural phenomenon.

What is the rainbow made of stone?

Notes: N/A

Become stronger, become faster
No wind or wave shall be your master.
Seek the one with hidden power
Find the lord of the tower
And finally you shall do your destiny
By simply splitting nine to three.

Notes: Yes, I took some lines from Downfall. Hope they don't sue.

Turn to steel, feel the breeze
As you slip in with such ease.
The people who you always knew
Shall never see your face or you.

Notes: I'll leave you guessing.

Interesting. So, they basically have a war of mudslinging? Muy interesante...

Oh, and... I am co-Admin of the Reality RPG here in COT. You might think of joining it yourself; the setting is futuristic, and there are pretty much no limits to where you can go (it encompasses many universes- in point of fact, an infinite number), so long as you don't go to Earth (it was destroyed).

Acshuhn too. Or Action, if you prefer the latter spelling. After all, without anything actualyl happening, it would be next to impossible to move to 'the next step' in realization. wink.gif

The full (back)story's actually in my RPG, here.

You could take a gander if interested. If interested in PLAYING, then by all means, vote for me. tongue.gif But don;'t vote if you aren't an RPer or would like to do so--otherwise it could be considered cheating. wink.gif

Yeah thanks ya guys. I was wondering why and how Ladon had ever managed to fish it out and review Cold Fusion...so this is why. Just figured that out. And LST, you had better review it before you become a critic; that way, I get another review! HA HA HA!!

The reason for that being that I put them in my topic, the SSCC.

Hey, Ladon I was looking back and I notice that your Orcs are amphibious. I am glad someone else shares my idea; I also think Orcs should be aquatic. Hopefully if your book gets published it won’t become a cliché.

romansoldierdude, I reviewed your SS, just so you know. Well, I have tried at a songfic recently and I myself declare it utter FAIL, but if anyone would like to view it go ahead. (link is located in me sig)

As for my actual book series, it has hit a dead end currently, but I will soon find something to pull out of this dead end.
romansoldierdude
I forgot to mention that I wrote a 64 page novel that was to be the start of a series, but I never wrote the sequel. I also started a different novel, got stuck, and before that wrote a short story. And all of these plots were related.

I have'nt even started sadly....

Would my character be a Mary Sue if he was the same race and gender as me?

~Mr. J~

No.

Does anyone else have a hard time writing for the opposite gender? My girls are either very guy-like or simply sexless.

A little help please...
Emperor Kraggh
kaukau.gifLeviathan, I find your situation intriguing, since, now that I think about it, it is perfectly understandable. Perhaps your masculine and sexless portrayals follow your preference? Maybe you actually have them down correctly, but you don't think it's good enough.

I have a question, when you say guy-like, do you mean that they turn out to be tom-boys?

I'm not sure if I could give you much advice on the subject, although I actually can, but I'm not sure if it would be good advice or if it would amount to much. First of all, I would suggest that you talk to girls more often and listen to what they have to say. I'm not saying that you should flirt with them, but just talk. Also, I would watch a few movies with varying female main characters. Movies that come to my mind at the moment are Ghost and Juno, as those probably portray their characters more realistically than, say, that woman from "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom". I liked how Molly (Ghost) and Juno (Juno) were portrayed as real people with real feelings and very real desires. I think that it's okay for you to go into detail about how your female characters feel. To be honest, I do not think that women, in general, think much different than men at a first glance, although there are many differences. That leads me to my third piece of advice. There are many things that are considered more lady-like than guy-like, such as driving habits, certain social skills, and so on. Recognize these differences and drop in those little bits of femininity wherever you see appropriate.

Coincidentally, I am trying to develop a female character for my series, who I wanted to post about on this topic. Tell me what you think of her so far.

Her name is Clear Water. She is introduced in the third book. If any of you remember anything about Silver Bird, then the fashion of her name might sound familiar. Of course, she comes from the planet Aarde. She is young, even among humans, at the age of 16. She starts out as a kind person, although slightly arrogant, now that I think about it. She holds a blue Levenzwaard, which has a tilted handle, inspired by Count Dukoo's lightsaber, but not because I'm a fan. The simple reason for it's design is that I can see why someone would benefit from it. Her sword fighting style is very balletic.

Anyways, I came up with her for several specific reasons. The character Master Legious, also of Aarde, is supposed to be a classic villain in the series who starts out as a good-guy in the third book, but converts to evil before it is even finnished. I thought of him as somehow loosing his wings after becoming evil, so he is flightless, but still proud. However, I never thought of a cause for this. Now I know that it was Clear Water who was eager to take him on after he betrayed them. She cut off his wings while in a sword fight in the sky. He survived his plummet through the clouds. Magic.

Also, I encountered another problem with Master Legious. Legious has a Levenzwaard which glows a strong red. He's a villain. See my problem. I didn't want it to be that because he was evil he had a red weapon. It's just that it's his favorite color. Also, I wanted another villain from Aarde. I also wanted more female characters. I also wanted a good-guy who would, over the course of more than one book, become seduced by evil. I looked at all of my characters and realized that none of them would fit into that plan, so I decided I would create a new one entirely. Also, I wanted a character who had done damage to Legious to eventually join him. You can see where this is all leading, right?

Okay, since that was all a pit choppy, I'll explain my plans for her. I've had time to develop her, but not opportunity, since I haven't been around a keyboard since before my trip to Disney World three weeks ago, where the idea for her originally spawned. The people of Aarde live a long time, although I have not quite defined how long their life expectancy is, but I have an idea that I want it to be at least a thousand years. Since Clear Water is sixteen, I think people will be able to relate to her. Everybody knows what it's like to be young and new in the world, and a lot of people know what it's like to be a teenager. Also, in a story so dominated by adults, it would be unique to throw in a kid. It would make her stand out. It would make her different. She's supposed to be a very likable person. She enjoys having fun. She cuts off Legious's wings. I'm thinking that she should have a rivalry with Legious. I'm not sure what other places she will have in the story, but as things come up, she'll have her purposes and moments in the spotlight. I do know, however, that she's supposed to have a relationship with Silver Bird. I've had several ideas, and the working ones have shifted from one to another over the weeks, but at the moment I'm thinking of him being her personal teacher. I'm thinking of him having some sort of responsibility over her. Also, I want her to have a relationships with one of the characters from the first two books, such as Buzzy, John, or Dexter. I would like the story to not just be about conflict but to also have a bit of fun added to it. This also opens a door for potential romance, causing readers to speculate something like "will John and Clear Water ever get together?" I'm not thinking of her actually falling in love with someone, but it adds another dimension to the story.

Anyways, while down in Disney World (go ahead, envy me), I spent a lot of time around the Star Wars stuff. It occurred to me, after talking to enough people, that everybody has their favorites. Boba Fett. Mace Windu. General Grievous. Jar Jar Binks. Darth Vader. Han Solo. Luke Skywalker (I even met a lady who had her last name legally changed to Skywalker. Cool.). Yoda. As for me, mine's Obi-Wan Kenobi. I wanted my series to have plenty of that too. I notied that I was also beginning to develop characters. In the case of Dreamcatcher, I spent a lot of time writing about him, and now he feels like he's inseparable from the series. I hope that eventually Clear Water will come out like that too.

I am also a fan of depressing stories. The Heroes win stuff gets quite boring. Usually my endings are sad (check out my COT contest entry. Set Me Free that's ultimate sadness for you). It annoys my readers sometimes that even if the good guys do win it is always bittersweet.

2007 was great Bionicle story year for me because yeah the Mahri succeeded but at the price of Matoro (Just an example).

RSD: Never Forever sounds pretty cool. I like it.
Spink
Nearly every story I write has a sad ending. 'Cept for the final ending I gave Layn cuz I figured he deserved better than getting sent to the underworld.

Never Forever sounds quite interesting. I've been working on the outline of SR2 of my series due to inspiration by The Clone Republic (not a StarWars book) and so far I think I'm getting to be as realistic as I can with it.
The Leviathan
I actually hadn't thought of that...

It just sounded like a cool name...but I 'aint changing it.
Spink
I'll see if I can think of any, but it took me quite some time to come up with "Demonic Beginnings" as my title o__o;

I like Revlution, it sounds all... Revolutionary...
romansoldierdude
Never forever started out as a song in rock559 and I's still non-existent band. Then I decided I'd write some thing with the title. And that was 2 years ago.

Well, time to write another chapter of my epic...

Oh, and L-man, I think Watchmen sounds okay, but you should think of maybe a two word title (or more) because otherwise, I'm afraid, it seems too generic. Like, if I named my story Fusion instead of what I really named it, Cold Fusion, which sounds a LOT better to me. And IMO Revolution sounds overused...it's no longer revolutionary...
Ladon: Lord of Hesperides
I probably should see that movie. Everyone tells me that it's pretty good.
romansoldierdude
It was brilliant. And it has Christian Bale, the guy who played Batman, and the guy who played Alfred in the movie.
Spink
I have yet for a movie to inspire me =P, normally music and other books I read get the job done rather well.

I'm still at a stuck point which is why I've been typing up a bunch of shorts stories and epic ideas recently XD

I've been writing (or attempting to write) a science-fiction story series, tentatively called the Zihar Chronicles. It involves contact with an advanced civilization (the Zihar) who have nearly destroyed themselves in civil war.

The story's gone through a few different lives, so to speak. The first was a just the writing as a school project and was pretty short. My other attempts just sort of...collapsed.
A Nice Hat
Random stuffz. Like TTGL.

That is all.
Emperor Kraggh
kaukau.gifNon human protagonist? Well, I can easily see that one happening, although usually - and I've seen this many times - when writers do that they make a tendency of being a little bit annoying. I don't know why, and it's just preference, but still.

Anyways, to Xar, you can't quite copyright an idea. However, if you actually wrote the whole manuscript down, then it would legally be your copyright, and there's no need to make a point out of it. As a matter of fact, if you mention it while sending it to a publisher, they will probably assume that you are a rookie and give little attention to your manuscript.

As for the rest of the story...I see concept, which one can't put a copyright on as far as I know, but no real plot. Also, I don't quite think publishers would be too interested. Writing is a competetive field. Publishing is business. They want something that's new and yet fits in with what's popular. The concept of Area 51 is too overused. I would suggest changing that to something else. As for Afghanistan, I think you'd be risking a little there, and I don't think the whole situation sounds logical enough. Why wouldn't America be whipped off the geopolitical map within the first day? It sounds like it would be better off an an RPG idea.

Although it doesn't really sound like it, I'm trying to be constructive, even though I don't have that many compliments to offer.

Now, that thing with the mirror, as stated by The Power That Is, didn't happen to be complex the way I saw it. When I think of complex, I think of J.R.R. Tolkien. However, now that you mention it, maybe I could add more use to it later on, and deeper magical meaning to it. In the meantime, the mirror was simply thought of as one of the magical artifacts owned by the insane Nuadine. I think I should probably get around to figuring out his back story, as well as how he knows of and gained possession of his magical artifacts.

Finally, since I almost forgot, I figured out how I want the movies to begin. You know, if I ever became a director. A real director, and not just some teenager who made an uber low budget film. I've given this thought for some time now. It's important not only in books, but movies to have memorable and powerful beginnings, ones that some might even label as classic. At first I thought I would literally provide the beginning of every movie with a bang, but I thought it wouldn't be classic and powerful enough. I wanted something like Star Wars: completely unorthodox and unexpected by the audience, and something that can provide mind-blowing visuals and music. I wanted something that would stand out on its own and if anything else was similar, it would be associated with the beginning of these movies. That's what happened to Star Wars, after all. Parodies are made of its beginnings all the time, and they are unmistakable. Thus, while in Disney World, while at Innovations and examining some of the advances in science and society Disney had made, including Fantasia, it became existent: the perfect beginning. Every one of the movies, I decided, would start with blackness. Pure blackness. Then, out of the nothing would come a voice from a narrator, and he will give a grand speech of great meaning and thought. Then, once he comes to his conclusion, there will be a perfect, synchronized symphony between the theme music and the appearing of the title of the movie. The theme music will continue to play, and there will be viewings of beauty, the kinds ranging from story to story, as each will have a different setting. The first movie, for example, will have a view of the stars, and then nebula, and perhaps the camera will drift through a star, and there will be viewings of a great battleship in space in its full glory. Then the music will come to its climax, and the story will begin.

You'd have to be very careful when doing something like that. There are two main dangers:

1) Anything grand can very easily slip into being cheesy. Even if doesn't become cheesy, many people have never heard grand done successfully, and will associate it with being cheesy.

And 2), you need to answer why this narrator is giving the speech, otherwise there will be dissonance in the audience's mind.

Just sayin'...

Graah! This topic is so popular now! I'll credit that to me for no reason. *basks in apparent lack of popularity*

...All he has to do is listen to Kamina, then.

To limit the cheese, ya know.
Emperor Kraggh
kaukau.gifI should have perhaps not have described it as "grand". I have something in mind, and it isn't cheesy. No, it's not grand, I meant "powerful". Perhaps solemn would have been an appropriate word too. I was thinking of something like in the beginning of "The Fellowship of the Ring". And what it talks about...Some deep moral, concept, and so forth. Something to think about.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure whether I want the narrator to be male or female.

EDIT: What's Kamina?

Well, take that, minus the cracks, make it trans-white, but keep the runes blue, beef it up, make it bigger, straighten the edges and simplify the hilt design, and you have Khald's sword. tongue.gif

Still thinking of a good name for it.

Hey, every massive sword deserves a great name.

MkII

Throw some generic fantasy syllables together, like "ad", "kor". "ax", "mor".
"Moraxakor!"
Seriously, just throw something together, or steal a name and change it. You may know, but few others will.

Or, alternatively, give this a shot. Random fantasy name generator. You may get some garbage, but some are good.
Useful when you just need a name for that one character who pops in a couple times.

~Zhalath
Spink
Stealing names and altering them I don't like. I just don't like the thought of that so much. IMO creating a name which either means something in another language, means something to the author, or just is a clever meaningful name is always what I go for even for the characters who rarely pop in. I prefer doing things that way as it gives a story either more depth, or more believable than a name like "Adkor" or something similiar.

If it's a sword, make the name so it means something and sounds great and powerful like.
