After studying the both of them I noticed large similaraties!! Lets start off with a picture of each.



Alright, lets start with the length of each starting with the MOL. Look at the length from the eyes that the "swish" at the top of the head is.Not only is it about the same length as the Kaukau, it also has the same bump down the centre.

Now lets look at the sides of the masks. Pretend to cut off the spikes from the sides of the MOL. This part matches the kaukau in the exact same way the "swish" at the top of the head does.

Now, look at the front of the mask. Not only does some look built on and cut out-but the size from left to right is almost the same as the Kaukaus.

The only difference between the two in my eyes is that, the MOL is an updated Kaukau. It has a larger mouth, eye holes, and do on.

Hey you're right. They do look really similar. Maybe Lego used the same basic idea in order to make both of them.

As soon as I saw a 3D photo of the MOL (the one on the official website does not give much to imagine) I noticed the similarities. It was not until I studied it further that I noticed. And I just noticed this too, the MOL even has a "bent" part where the Kaukau's eyes see through! Except, it is a solid color with eye holes!

I was thinking about the same thing when I saw picture of MoL at BZPower...
And I must say - you're right!

I am guessing Lego used the Kaukau as a base. They did it with the Hau to make the Kaukau Nuva, Akaku Nuva and Hau Nuva.

i thought the MOL resembled a Kaukau nuva more!

I disagree. The kaukau nuva is sleek and looks almost as if it would be worn by a high speed skater of some sort. Its sleekness just does not resemble the square brute-powerful look the MOL has

The top half and the sides really looks like It, maybe Lego ran out of ideas

I think Lego-as everything else from government to food companies-has based one thing on another idea. Otherwise there would not be Lego-let alone Bionicle! If new ideas werent based in some way on old ideas, imagine the sort of technology we would be living in today?

Not at all, Vegeta! I was just pointing out that the KauKau Nuva is all around much more different to the Mask Of Light

You actually noticed this? I wouldn't have... But you are right, they do look very similar. But unlike the KauKau, the MoL looks dangerous, predatorian even... I'd say it's a better version of the KauKau.
As to why they are alike, I don't know... Prototype bug, perhaps, like with the early Kanohi protos...

The MOL looks like Croos of the kaukau, nuju's mask, and the miru nuva. but i still like it

I have to agree on the fact that the MOL looks a lot more dangerous than the Kaukau. Whilst the Kaukau's main purpose is for breathing underwater-it has a sort of "I can breathe underwater" look. However, the MOL has large eyes and a large mouth. It is just large all around. With spikes and what look like jagged edges in its mouth. Its scaring me just thinking about it!

But I disagree on it being a prototype bug. I think Lego will keep the mask as it is-if it were sleek like the Nuva I would be disappointed. But as I said in my last post, they have always used an old part to make a new one. Like the Hau to make the Hau Nuva and the Toa Nuva legs to make the Rahkshi legs
